There are beach breaks, and it has some jetties, as well as a pier. It's very good practice for where ever we go around the globe."And the beaches also resemble the type of waves team U.S.A.will be competing on when they get to Japan next year."For us to be able to utilize something that's similar to the Olympic site, without having to travel to Japan, is going to be very helpful to our team," says Cruse.And this Sunday, Oceanside is calling on all surfers to hit the waves in support of California Surfing Day. It is the state's designated holiday to honor the history and the culture of the sport. "Obviously, every day is surfing day for me and other surfers," says Simpson. "But September 20th is a big one. On World AIDS Day, a resurfaced photo on Facebook is reminding people of the impact the epidemic had on the LGBTQ community.An image posted by Paul Davis, identified on his Facebook and LinkedIn as the national advocacy coordinator for nonprofit Housing Works, has garnered more than 2,600 reactions and thousands of shares. The image shows a photo from 1993 by Eric Luse and was originally published in the San Francisco Chronicle.The photo in his post depicts the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus. Seven of the people in the photo are shown wearing white and the rest are in black. According to the caption accompanying the photo, and other articles, the people in white represented the remaining living members of the original choir and those in black represented those who were lost to AIDS at the time the photo was taken.Though 25 years old, the photo still resonates with people, as seen in the comments on Davis' post."I am a member of SFGMC and so is my husband," said one commenter, Michael Jay Stauffer Joyce. "If I remember this picture was taken in the early 90’s. OTAY MESA (CNS) - Authorities Tuesday released the names of a 70-year- old man and the two San Diego police officers who shot him in Otay Valley Regional Park in Otay Mesa when he allegedly pulled out a handgun that turned out to be a replica.Around 6 a.m. Thursday, Officers Jeremy Huff and Filip Perry from the Neighborhood Policing Division were in the park, near the 500 block of Beyer Way, to conduct an outreach and cleanup operation in conjunction with other city agencies when they encountered Carlos Soto, who was staying in an illegal encampment, according to Lt. Andra Brown of the San Diego Police Department."When officers approached the man, he produced a handgun," Brown said. "Officers gave the man commands to get on the ground. The man then reached for the handgun and officers used their services weapons."Soto was taken to a hospital, where he underwent surgery for non-life- threatening wounds, the lieutenant said.No officers were injured and detectives recovered the handgun at the scene, but it turned out to be a replica firearm, Brown said.Huff has been with the department for eight years and Perry has been with the department for nine months.Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to call the SDPD's Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293.Anonymous tips can be called in to Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 1347
