BUFFALO, N.Y. — Social workers could soon work alongside police officers in the Buffalo Police Department. Captain Jeff Rinaldo with the Buffalo Police Department said Monday that officers in Buffalo have been undergoing crisis intervention training for several years. He said officers are learning techniques to help handle situations with people in crisis, including mental health, substance abuse and homelessness. Buffalo police are working on an "initiative to embed licensed clinical social workers" who would work alongside police and help respond to crisis calls, according to paperwork submitted to the Buffalo Common Council. "The goal now is to create a specialized unit called the Behavioral Health Team within the police department," Rinaldo said. Endeavor Health Services is the company named in the proposed contract. A recently-awarded grant allowed the company to hire three trained clinicians to work with Buffalo police and handle crisis calls, Rinaldo said.The contract requires approval by the Common Council and is expected to be discussed at a meeting on Tuesday.The department's new plan was released as protesters across the country call for significant changes in policing. Some proposed plans involve defunding local police departments and, instead, sending social workers to deal with certain crisis calls. BROOKSVILLE, Fla. -- A Brooksville, Florida elementary school gave all of its teachers pink slips on Friday, the school district said it's an effort to make the school better."It should’ve came from the school. Not have to hear the news through Facebook," said father Andrew Beck. Facebook is how he found out that all the teachers at his children’s school were given pink slips. The school, Moton Elementary, which is a "Double D" school and the lowest performing school in Hernando County.During a faculty meeting on Friday teachers were notified they would be done working at Moton after the school year. Tenured teachers are to be reassigned.The district says they made the announcement before the end of the school year to give non-tenured teachers time to look for other jobs.  "To see what many of them are going through right now, its heartbreaking," said Megan Oates, a former Moton teacher. Megan Oates and Bridie Jones both taught at Moton for more than 10 years before quitting last year."I no longer felt like I had the support that I needed to do my job," said Jones. Bridie Jones owns Lake Lindsey Mall and Deli where both teachers now work.They say they’re much happier without the stress and pressure they faced from the constant critiquing of teaching at Moton."It was a lot of stress. Every day you had a different administrator walk into your room. They were looking for a reason that Moton was a "D" school and they came in and picked us apart every single day," said Jones.But they say it isn’t the teacher’s fault. Jones says Moton needed help and more staff but the school district didn’t listen."As a teacher you're told, you don’t punish the whole class if something’s not working because it’s not fair to the ones who weren’t a part of that," said Oates.    The school district sent a letter home to parents on Monday explaining that the decision was made because the school was facing closure or state takeover. The letter states in short:“With a fresh cadre of teachers coming on board, Moton is positioned to return to a high performing school.”As for parents, they say they're concerned about the decision and just want what is best for their kids."I think it's bad for their education. The main qualifying point to receive the free, all-inclusive wedding inside their quaint farm barn: one person in the couple must be a military veteran."We collected new and gently used wedding dresses," M Segrist said. "There's a consignment shop offering bridesmaids dresses. There's full salon, mani-pedi, facials, seamstress, floral photography for engagement and the ceremony. There's tons of gifts."Those gifts have come from veteran-based businesses across the United States who wanted to make the six couples' big days even more special. Some wedding gifts came from as far away as Alaska and Hawaii.M Segrist said it was a challenge to whittle the stack of applicants down, but they chose each of the couples for specific reasons. Toby MacFarlane is accused of paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to get his children into USC. The documents show that MacFarlane reportedly paid an agency to fabricate a soccer profile for his daughter and a basketball profile for his son.MacFarlane reportedly paid 0,000 to various organizations for the admissions. His daughter attended the school from 2014 to 2018 when she graduated, according to the documents.
