Those looking to get out of their homes Labor Day weekend appear to be favoring remote locations, according to travel site Airbnb.Of homes and living spaces booked on the site for Labor Day Weekend, 30 percent are in remote and out-of-the-way places, Airbnb said in a recent report. This is almost double the percentage of remote bookings over the holiday weekend in 2019.The most popular getaway locations in the US over the holiday weekend are ones with water access or traditional fall foliage; including Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, Big Bear Lake, California, Wilmington, North Carolina, Scranton, Pennsylvania, and Orange Beach, Alabama. After a slow summer travel season, with road trips and flights down year-over-year, AAA is reporting many will be heading out of town over the Labor Day Weekend. Although the number of travelers will be down compared to previous years, low gas prices and last-minute trips will put many of them on the roads.Once Labor Day Weekend is over, Airbnb is reporting guests are looking to stay longer. Many are looking for months-long stays into the fall, as work and schools remain closed with the coronavirus pandemic."There's this really new trend where traveling and living are starting to blur together," the company's CEO, Brian Chesky, told CNN Business' Richard Quest. "People are booking for weeks at a time or even months at a time."Airbnb reports the number of reviews that mention “remote working” or “work remotely” since March has nearly tripled from the first half of 2019. 1539
Three Democratic senators on Monday filed a lawsuit challenging the appointment of acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker, ratcheting up the court effort to declare his placement atop the Justice Department as unconstitutional.Sens. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island and Mazie Hirono of Hawaii filed the suit in US District Court on Monday, represented by the groups Protect Democracy and the Constitutional Accountability Center. The lawsuit is only the latest challenge to Whitaker's appointment to replace Jeff Sessions after President Donald Trump fired his attorney general the day after the election.Whitaker was serving as Sessions' chief of staff, and has not gone through the Senate confirmation process in that role. His appointment leap-frogged Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, which also gave Whitaker control over special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation that had previously been supervised by Rosenstein.Whitaker's appointment has been criticized because of his vocal criticisms of the Mueller investigation, and Democrats have previously urged him to recuse himself from the probe in addition to questioning the constitutionality of his appointment.Last week, the Justice Department issued a memo defending Whitaker's appointment, concluding that it was legally justified under the Vacancies Reform Act.The Senate Democrats' lawsuit, however, argues that his appointment his unconstitutional under the Constitution's Appointments Clause requiring Senate confirmation of high-level federal appointees. In addition to the lawsuit filed Monday, Maryland's attorney general filed suit last week asking a federal judge to replace Whitaker with Rosenstein.The-CNN-Wire 1731

T-Mobile and Sprint finally agreed to a massive telecom merger after years of negotiations punctuated by two breakups. The billion merger, announced Sunday, values Sprint near its current share price of .50.The tie-up would position the telecom companies as fiercer competitors to Verizon and AT&T, which have long dominated the US market."I'm excited to announce that @TMobile & @Sprint have reached an agreement to come together to form a new company -- a larger, stronger competitor that will be a force for positive change for all US consumers and businesses! Watch this & click through for details." said T-Mobile CEO John Legere, in a tweet Sunday.A report that the deal was getting close drove up Sprint's stock price by 8% on Friday and T-Mobile's price edged up as well. The stock price for SoftBank, a Japanese conglomerate with a majority stake in Sprint, rose by 3%.Sprint and T-Mobile first discussed a merger in 2014 but scrapped it because of concerns about regulatory challenges from the Obama administration. The companies expected to have a better shot at the merger under the Trump administration.Sprint stock tanks as T-Mobile merger said to collapseSoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son met with Trump the month before he took office to talk up an investment in US businesses.A few weeks later, T-Mobile's Legere said he was open to "various forms of consolidation" when asked about a potential merger with Sprint and SoftBank under the Trump administration. But last November, after much speculation, the two companies issued a statement saying they "have ceased talks.""While we couldn't reach an agreement to combine our companies, we certainly recognize the benefits of scale through a potential combination. However, we have agreed that it is best to move forward on our own," Marcelo Claure, the Sprint CEO, said at the time.Sprint and T-Mobile's announcement is just the latest step in an ongoing movement towards telecom consolidation. AT&T is in talks to acquire Time Warner, which owns CNN and CNNMoney. The outcome of that billion merger-in-the-making depends on a case in federal court, which is pending the decision of the judge. 2203
This is harassment pure and simple. This ‘inquiry’ by NYC democrats is 100% motivated by politics, publicity and rage. They know very well that there’s nothing here and that there was no tax benefit whatsoever. These politicians are simply ruthless.https://t.co/4dQoDzQlRX— Ivanka Trump (@IvankaTrump) November 20, 2020 327
