ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Robert Downey Jr. says he had a wild Disneyland ride in his younger days. The "Iron Man" and "Avengers: Endgame" star, among those honored Friday as Disney Legends, said his first visit to the Southern California resort included a brief detention for "smoking pot in a gondola.""I was brought to a surprisingly friendly processing center, given a stern warning and returned to, if memory serves, one very disappointed group chaperone," Downey said.He turned serious when he spoke about the Marvel movies."I get to remain a fan of the first inclusive and evolving cinematic universe ever so far," said Downey, whose character meets a dark fate in "Avengers: Endgame."Disney CEO Robert Iger presented the Legends trophy to the actor at the D23 Expo Disney fan event. The company said it honors those who have made remarkable contributions to the Disney legacy.Singer Christina Aguilera, actress Ming-Na Wen, journalists Diane Sawyer and Robin Roberts and directors Jon Favreau and Kenny Ortega were among others receiving trophies.Aguilera, who performed "Reflection" from the Disney movie "Mulan," called it "way cooler than a Grammy."Wen thanked her mother for giving her the courage to live "this American dream."The actress voiced the role of Mulan and is joining the cast of the upcoming Disney Plus streaming service's "The Mandalorian." 1371

As Columbus, Ohio’s mayor announced that the city’s statue of Christopher Columbus will come down, a petition is circulating to rename the city “Flavortown.”The legacy of Christopher Columbus has come into focus as the country comes to grips with the United States’ past with racism. The Christopher Columbus statue at Columbus’ City Hall is one of several across the country that are slated to come down. Statues in both San Francisco and Sacramento are also in the process of being removed.A separate statue of Christopher Columbus in Columbus, Ohio, will come down from the center of Columbus State Community College's campus. As of late Friday, more than 8,000 petitioners are calling for Columbus, Ohio’s renaming to Flavortown.“Columbus is an amazing city, but one whose name is tarnished by the very name itself,” the petition reads.“Why not rename the city Flavortown? The new name is twofold,” the petition adds. “For one, it honors Central Ohio's proud heritage as a culinary crossroads and one of the nation's largest test markets for the food industry. Secondly, cheflebrity Guy Fieri was born in Columbus.”Flavortown is Fieri's catchphrase, which he often says on episodes of "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives." Over the years, historians have accused Columbus of participating in slavery, murder and other atrocities against American natives in the 15th century. Despite this, Columbus was long hailed as a hero to the west, with a national holiday bestowed in his honor.“For many people in our community, the statue represents patriarchy, oppression and divisiveness. That does not represent our great city, and we will no longer live in the shadow of our ugly past,” Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther wrote in a statement. “Now is the right time to replace this statue with artwork that demonstrates our enduring fight to end racism and celebrate the themes of diversity and inclusion.”A number of residents responded to Ginther in opposition to removing the statue, citing that the statue represents the city's and country's history. 2050

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, with millions of schoolchildren still learning remotely as the weather turns colder, some might benefit from a few investments in their at-home experience. The following items, all under , can help make distance learning more appealing to even the youngest learners.1. New background decorationsWhen your child is on screen all day, sprucing up their background with a wall decal or two can help keep them in school mode, especially when virtual backgrounds are prohibited by school systems. Consider shopping for a school-themed wall decal like crayons, pencils, numbers or books. A quick search on Amazon or Etsy pulls up dozens of choices for under .2. A clip-on selfie lightSmall selfie lights that attach to the side of a screen can help light up your child’s face and ensure the teacher can see them, too. This light is especially useful if your student is sitting in a dark room or has a light or window behind them. You’ll want to make sure it’s not too bright for their eyes, but selfie lights generally allow you to adjust the brightness.3. A paper plannerEven though distance learning largely takes place on a computer, it’s nice for kids to get some practice staying organized on paper. To keep track of homework assignments, due dates and even online classes, consider buying a small paper planner for your student. A pack of fine-tip colorful pens can also be a nice bonus.4. Online programs to boost learningAfter checking which free online programs are available through your child’s school, you might want to supplement your child’s learning with some relatively inexpensive academic games. Prodigy, a math game for students in grades one through eight, offers a free version and a premium version, which costs .95 a month (or less if you purchase a longer subscription). Scholastic offers a “Learn at Home” program that costs .99 a month. There are countless other options, so you might want to search online for educational games related to the subjects your child wants to practice.5. A stress ball to squeezeKids of all ages (and even some adults) can struggle with sitting still and remaining on video for class all day. If your child likes to fidget, you might want to consider buying a large stress ball for them to squeeze with their hands or feet off screen. It can help get out some of their energy so they can stay focused on class. If you search online for “giant stress ball,” you’ll find plenty of options for under .6. Blue-light glassesYou’ve probably heard about the blue light being emitted from computer screens that can irritate eyes and even keep you up at night. To protect your child’s eyes from that stress, or just to make a fashion statement, you might want to invest in some blue-light glasses. They filter out the blue light and also look pretty cool. While some are pricier, plenty of colorful kids’ models are available for or less.7. Fine-tip dry-erase markersTeachers often ask students to hold up their work on dry-erase boards or paper to help keep them on task. Using a fine-tip marker with an eraser tip can make it easier for small hands to fit more numbers or words on their dry-erase board; buying different colors can make it more fun, too. You can find multipacks for under online.8. Trifold poster boardIf your child is easily distracted or working in a room with other people — including other children attending school on different computers — then surrounding their front and side views with a trifold poster board can help them stay focused on class. They can even decorate the poster board with photos and drawings.9. Kid-size headphonesHeadphones can also help cut out distractions, and there are plenty of kids’ headphones on the market for under . If you’re willing to spend a few dollars more for wireless headphones, that can help reduce the temptation to fidget with the wires.More From NerdWalletNo Credit? 3 Steps to Qualify for a Great Credit Card3 Ways to Keep Your Distance With Contactless PaymentsIf Credit Card Relief’s a No-Go, Check Out Debt ManagementKimberly Palmer is a writer at NerdWallet. Amid the coronavirus pandemic, Thanksgiving this year is bound to look a bit different than in years past. When it comes to holiday gatherings, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends you eat with people you already live with by having a small dinner or having a virtual feast.According to Numerator, a market research firm, 70% of Americans polled that they were doing Thanksgiving differently this year.According to the New York Times, consumer surveys by Butterball and Hormel Foods also saw its customers celebrating the holiday with smaller gatherings. In turn, this has many grocery store chains approaching the holiday differently by selling smaller turkeys this year to accommodate consumers.According to CNN, chains like Walmart, Giant Eagle, and Stew Leonard's are either selling smaller birds or boneless turkey breasts. 861
