SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Residents in Hillcrest are worried homeless encampments will start more fires in the area.Back in March, a canyon underneath the Vermont Street Bridge went up in flames. Fire crews say it was started from an encampment. Marina Macklin knows that problem all too well. "You're very afraid of the fires," said Macklin. "Because they move really quickly out there because it's so dry." MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodNearly two months later, debris from the Vermont Street Bridge remains in the canyon. "They cleaned it up? No." said Macklin. "It's all still there, it's all laying down there."According to the University Heights Community Association, the canyon west of the bridge is owned by Caltrans. The east side is city property. Councilman Christopher Ward's office says they've been working to clean it. "If they say they're cleaning it up they're taking their time," said Macklin. "Why?" She says cleaning it won't solve the problem. "They go down there, set up their camps, somebody starts a fire, and they leave for a while," said Macklin."The city might go down there and do a little bit of stuff and then as soon as it's all clear and they feel safe the homeless go back in there again."Councilman Ward's office said they've already added more security guards to the Hillcrest Market area. "Security guards up here don’t do anything for the canyon," said Macklin. "I don’t even think they're supposed to go there. Is the city gonna hire security guards to go down into the canyon? I don’t think so." 1668

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police are investigating following a deadly hit-and-run in Clairemont Wednesday night. According to police, the incident happened around 7:30 p.m. on the 5500 block of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard. Police say a 44-year-old man was found dead on the eastbound lanes of traffic. They say he was struck by a car, which fled the scene. Then the man was hit by two other vehicles as he was lying on the road. Both also fled the scene.Clairemont Mesa Boulevard near Dubois Street was closed for several hours during the investigation. 563

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Recent changes at the border are being felt as President Trump considers a total border shutdown to combat the immigration crisis. Customs and Border Protection officials announced the reduction of the commercial lanes at Otay Mesa from 10 lanes to 8 Tuesday. “4 to 5 hours,” said one driver who added another man in his fleet took more than 6 hours to make it across Wednesday. Companies say drivers are missing deadlines or just skipping the day altogether to avoid the delays. “They lose millions,” said driver Benjamin Alfaro on the already cumbersome process taking even longer, “so if they don’t do that in the normal time of course they lose money. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Record-breaking Santa Ana winds are impacting communities throughout the county. Shutoffs forced closures in seven districts including Alpine, Dehesa, Lakeside, Poway, and Cajon Valley.In Mira Mesa, winds toppled a tent that one restaurant had set up for outdoor dining. The owner of Golden Island Dim Sum and Asian Cuisine was left cleaning up the mangled mess Thursday morning in hopes of welcoming customers back later that day.In Julian, employees at the Villa Chardonnay Horses with Wings sent out a plea for help after their power was shut off.They have about 350 animals on their property including horses and dogs. Without a generator, they say they can’t give their animals any water.“We need electricity to pump the wells,” said Cindy Montgomery. “I've got a generator in the back of this car right now but it's a small one that will suffice for now, but we need an industrial size generator.”Montgomery says they have a solar-powered unit as a backup but it isn’t working.“There are no generators anywhere,” said colleague Billie Feldman. “We need an industrial size generator. Any help that we can get please let us know please contact us as soon as possible.”SDG&E says these are some of the strongest winds they’ve seen since they began installing their network of weather stations nearly a decade ago.
