Federal safety regulators say that at least four people have died following head-on crashes in Hyundai and Kia cars in which the airbags did not deploy.The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it's investigating the airbags in 2011 Hyundai Sonatas and 2012 and 2013 Kia Fortes after it received reports the devices failed to deploy in six different crashes that resulted in injuries, including the four involving fatalities.There are an estimated 425,000 cars on US roads that could be affected by the problem, according to the NHTSA's review, which was made public on Saturday.Hyundai announced earlier this month that it plans to recall 155,000 of the 2011 Sonatas due to a short circuit in the controller that deploys the airbags. But it has yet to recall the cars because it does not yet have a fix in place. The automaker said it will notify owners by April 20.Hyundai's initial recall statement did not mention that any deaths or injuries had occurred in the cars with faulty airbags. When asked about the NHTSA's investigation, it said the four accidents involving Sonatas resulted in two deaths and two injuries. It described the accidents as "rare and unique.""These accidents included a very high rate of speed and a severe offset head-on collision to the front driver side of the vehicle," said the company. "We are actively investigating what exactly causes the airbag control unit to become damaged in these specific types of accidents."Kia, which is also owned by Hyundai Motors but operates as a separate company in the US, has not announced any recalls for the Forte related to the airbag. Kia said it is working with NHTSA but that it "has not confirmed any airbag non-deployments arising from the potential chip issue."The airbags were made by ZF-TRW, according to the NHTSA filing. Spokespersons for VF-TRW did not respond to a request for comment.The largest auto recall in the nation's history involved 50 million airbags made by supplier Takata for 37 million cars across most major automakers. Those airbags, which exploded and sent shrapnel into the car's occupants, have been tied to at least 13 U.S. deaths and more than 200 injuries, according to NHTSA. 2238

Pack your worries.  Every day, billions of germs are left all over Southwest Florida International Airport.Biology professor Cliff Renk from Florida Gulf Coast University and student Matt Glass joined us as we took a microscopic look at all the germs we encounter when we fly into and out of the airport. The professor swabbed all sorts of surfaces and using a monitor that counts the number of germs. A reading of 300 on the meter indicates a normal amount of bacteria.One elevator button registered 418. The handles on those luggage carts: a nasty 532.  Escalator handles were about the same but loaded with bacteria colonies. The buttons on the ATM machine in the main concourse were home to almost 80 different colonies of bacteria. But that's just the beginning. If you're flying, everyone needs to go through the security checkpoint.  And the bin you place your phone in -- which you hold to your face -- might be the same one the person before it put his shoes in following a visit to the bathroom. They could carry staph, which can cause pimples, boils and in some cases flesh-eating bacteria. There are about 1000-1500 TSA plastic bins that we place our stuff in when we go through security. We tested the first bin and its handles; it came in came below the normal level. The second tested at more than two times higher.  The third, well that's a different story. Even though the number was 611, Professor Renk says some stomach-churning germ colonies  - more than 300 - were lurking on board, including fecal bacteria and other bacteria generally found on the bottom of shoes. Reps from both the airport and the TSA tell us it's important we remember any public space is a breeding ground for germs and to bring and use hand sanitizer or wipes at all times.  Finally, they say to wash your hands frequently. And speaking of hands we did one last test on reporter Frank Cipolla's hands to show you what any one of us might be lugging around at any moment. He spent all morning at the airport and shook about a dozen hands. Remember, 300 is a normal reading. His right hand registered about 3000.The TSA says it would cost too much money to put hand sanitizer dispensers in every airport in America, so a warning to all travelers. FREDERICK, Colo. – Law enforcement officials said onl Friday that Chris Watts is in protective custody and being isolated from other inmates at the Weld County jail because of the publicity the case has received and say they still have several days of work to do before Monday’s deadline for charges to be filed.Watts, 33, who has been arrested and accused of killing his wife, Shanann, and their two young daughters earlier this week in Frederick, also has declined to speak with the media for the time being at the advice of his attorney, the Weld County Sheriff’s Office said.The sheriff’s office additionally said that Watts is not currently able to receive visitors because he hasn’t been in the jail system for long enough.The Weld County coroner is conducting at least one autopsy related to the deaths of the Watts family Friday. The body believed to be Shanann’s was discovered on Anadarko property, officials said Thursday morning, and those believed to be Celeste and Bella were recovered from oil tanks nearby later Thursday, high-ranking officials said.Frederick police also said on Friday that they believe they have two or three more days of interviews to conduct related to the case. Weld County prosecutors have until 3:30 p.m. Monday to file formal charges against Watts.He is next due in court Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. to learn what formal charges he faces in the case.
