McDonald's announced it's tripling the amount of scholarship money it's offering to its employees to help them get a college degree.Eligible crew members can receive up to ,500 per year and managers can make up to ,000 a year, up from 0 and ,050 respectively.One of the workers who has taken advantage of the program is Jackie Southam from Henderson, Nevada. She's been working at McDonalds for the past 8 years.During that time, she's risen to become a manager, and she's also gotten help from McDonald's to earn a bachelor's degree from Nevada State in biology with a minor in chemistry.With the additional funding increase, she's planning to go back this fall and pursue a master's degree in public health.Her goal is to become an epidemiologist and work for the Centers for Disease Control.She says she's had to pay her entire way through school working two jobs, and the scholarship from McDonald's helped her get through.Right now, UNLV costs around ,100 a semester for state residents, and the College of Southern Nevada is around ,400, plus other costs like books and transportation.McDonald's isn't alone though. Working for several other large companies can also help you get assistance with tuition. Best Buy, Walmart, Verizon, and Bank of America all offer similar types of help.  1333

Many of us dream about being our own boss, but the thought of actually doing it can be daunting. A new survey suggests many of us share the same concerns about starting our own business. One woman knows that fear all too well, but she overcame it and says you can too.“Every client I try to know their name,” said Whitney Herman, the owner of Shift Cycle. “Everyone who walks in the business I want to be their friends. I want them to feel like this is their home because I feel like it's my home."It’s been two years since Herman officially became a small business owner by opening Shift Cycle, a boutique indoor cycling studio offering 45-minute indoor cycling classes.The new mom couldn't find a place where she could work out and bring her newborn daughter along. “Pretty much everywhere that I wanted to go, none of them offered childcare,” Herman said.So, she decided to create a place of her own.Turns out many of us see ourselves as entrepreneurs as well. The UPS Store talked with people as part of its Inside Small Business Survey and found 66 percent of them dream of opening a small business. But fears may be holding many back, something Herman understands.“Terrifying,” Herman said. “I mean it's still scary.”Forty-five percent of people are concerned about financial security, and 39 percent are concerned about the financial commitment required to open the business.“I think the funding and financing for most people is the hardest part about starting a business,” Herman said.  She struggled to get a loan because many lenders require two years of business experience.“I mean there were times where we were like, ‘I don't think we're going to do it,’” Herman said.  “We would get so close and then we had a bank be like, ‘Oh sorry, we can't do it.’”She was able to get funding through a non-profit, but still struggled with a fear 37 percent of people in the study share; fear of failure.“I have no MBA,” Herman said. “I have no degree in anything business related. I've never really managed people. I don't really know anything about finance, so I was kind of going it's completely blind.”Luckily her husband knew more about those things. And what she lacked in those areas, she made up in passion and desire to learn along the way. If you have a dream of starting a business, Herman says you can do the same thing.“You just have to believe in your product,” Herman said. “And you have to believe in yourself that you're strong enough and motivated enough to just kind of fight. MANHATTAN, N.Y. — Workers installed 192 new glittering Waterford crystal triangles on Times Square's New Year's Eve ball on Sunday in preparation for a pandemic-limited celebration on Thursday.The ball is a 12-foot-diameter geodesic sphere covered with more than 2,000 crystal triangles of various sizes. Some new crystals are swapped in every year. This year's addition features a new “Gift of Happiness” design represented by a sunburst of bright cuts radiating outward. The ball, blazing with more than 32,000 LED lights, will be dropped at 11:59 p.m. on New Year's Eve to ring in 2021.The Times Square celebration will be much smaller than usual because of the coronavirus pandemic. MIAMI — All of South Florida is now in the cone of concern for Hurricane Eta, which hammered Nicaragua on Tuesday.According to the 4 a.m. ET update from the National Hurricane Center, Eta is packing maximum sustained winds of 60 mph.The NHC said Eta will rapidly weaken as the storm moves farther inland over Nicaragua and Honduras.The forecasts project the storm will curve and emerge over the northwestern Caribbean Sea on Thursday night or Friday. Once it does, forecasters said it could re-strengthen into a tropical storm.By Sunday at 7 p.m., the center of Eta will be just south of Florida with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph.According to meteorologists for Scripps station WPTV in Palm Beach, Florida project that there will be a higher confidence on Friday for the potential impacts in South Florida."Computer models are in fairly good agreement, but the timing is different," said WPTV chief meteorologist Steve Weagle said. "Some are much faster, bringing the rainfall in on Friday. Others a lot slower, bringing it in on Saturday."At that point, Weagle said the forecast is calling for tropical storm conditions over the weekend with heavy rain and gusty winds.Weagle said rain bands will likely arrive later on Friday, loosely tied to Eta and a weak front over Cuba. Heavy rain squalls and possible tropical storm conditions are in the forecast for Saturday and Sunday."It'll likely be a very sloppy, disorganized weather system as it moves through," Weagle said. LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- A Kentucky judge ruled Tuesday that a grand juror in the Breonna Taylor case is allowed to speak publicly. The grand juror alleges the jury was not given a chance to weigh charges directly connected to Taylor's death against the Louisville police officers who shot her.Jefferson Circuit Court Judge Annie O'Connell released a statement in her ruling, saying the order is not intended to coerce, compel or even encourage any grand juror to come forward. It merely grants a grand juror's request to do so and gives others the option. 558
