(KGTV) - More than 200 Marines and Sailors from Camp Pendleton have been helping in the Creek Fire fight for nearly two weeks."This is why Marines sign up, this is why they join the Marine Corps, is to serve," Commanding Officer of the 7th Engineer Support Battalion, Lt. Col. Melina Mesta said during a trip to The Sierra National Forest last weekend.The 233 Marines and Sailors with the 7th ESB deployed September 19th after a day of firefighting training on Camp Pendleton. Lt. Col. Mesta said this task force is equipped with the right tools to pivot on a moment's notice to an unconventional mission like this."Like we say in the Marine Corps, 'Any Climb, Any Place.' We like to adapt to our environment and anything that is asked of us," Operation Chief Master Sgt. Juan Guillen said.Mesta described the mission at the Creek Fire as a lot of manual labor, "really hard dirty work with some long hours."Master Sgt. Guillen said Marines and Sailors wake up at 5:30 a.m., wash up, and go to a briefing. Then they head out around 7:30 a.m. and work the fire line until around 6:30 p.m. That's an 11 hour work day every day, with breaks to keep them safe."They're assessing any hot spots any areas that could potentially flare up." Master Sgt. Guillen said there is also a night shift that patrols with the same mission.Master Sgt. Guillen acknowledged how difficult the work is and said Marines and Sailors appreciate what firefighters do. He said one of the differences in this work is where the heavy backpack filled with supplies sits on your back as a firefighter.He said Marines are used to having a heavy pack that sits high up on the back. This versus what they use on the fire line, which is much lower, closer to the waist to allow for bending and work closer to the ground.During their deployment, containment of the fire jumped 22% to 44%, making a tangible difference that hits close to home."It's an honor to be back here and help out the community. I spent a lot of time up here camping near where the Creek Fire's at." Master Sgt. Guillen said he grew up in Fresno, his parents were migrant workers in the fields.He said he's thankful to see businesses nearby opening back up now that the fire's threat is dwindling."We're here to support as long as needed and the mindset of the Marines and Sailors that are out here is that mission accomplishment is our priority," he said.All of the Marines and Sailors at the Creek Fire volunteered for this mission. Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell gave investors reason to cheer on Wednesday when he suggested that the Fed may slow down its interest rate hikes.The Dow surged on the news and closed up 600 points, or more than 2%, in midday trading. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq each rose about 2% as well.Powell reassured investors that the Fed wouldn't risk killing off economic growth by continuing to aggressively raise rates next year."Our gradual pace of raising interest rates has been an exercise in balancing risks," Powell said during a speech at the Economic Club of New York. "We know that moving too fast would risk shortening the expansion. We also know that moving too slowly -- keeping interest rates too low for too long -- could risk other distortions in the form of higher inflation."Powell noted that rates remain relatively low and that they are just below what many economists consider "neutral for the economy -- that is, neither speeding up nor slowing down growth."Investors seemed to interpret Powell's comments as a sign that the Fed, which is widely expected to raise rates again at a meeting next month, may now only hike rates once or maybe twice at most in 2019 as opposed to earlier forecasts of three or four hikes.The Dow's most cyclical stocks were among the biggest gainers. I think that was what really sparked the market to go higher."Cheslock added that some of Powell's remarks about the market not being in a bubble were reassuring as well.Powell's comments may assuage concerns about the Fed possibly going too far with rate increases, a criticism leveled by President Donald Trump.But Tobias Levkovich, Citigroup chief US equity strategist, told Quest that the market may be overreacting."I'm not dancing or partying right at the moment," he said, adding that the Fed has talked about gradual rate hikes "for a very long time." "Maybe [the markets] were just worried it would be worse," Levkovich said.To that end, Trump, who chose Powell to replace former Fed chief Janet Yellen, has often bashed him and the Fed on Twitter and in interviews for the rate hikes.In fact, Trump attacked Powell again in a Washington Post interview Tuesday, saying he was "not even a little bit happy" with Powell and that the Fed was making a mistake with so many rate hikes.Trump even added that sometimes decisions he makes with his "gut" matter more than what other people's brains tell him.Whether or not investors were using their guts or brains when deciding to jump back into stocks Wednesday remains to be seen. FLORENCE, Ky. -- A Newport, Kentucky mom was arrested and charged with child endangerment Wednesday after she left her 1-year-old in her SUV at the Florence Mall, police said.Christina Krups, 29, left her child in her BMW for "at least 10 to 15 minutes," according to Florence Police Capt. Tom Grau.Mall security found the child after a group of people began to gather around the SUV, he said. The windows were down an inch and the car was locked, Grau said. It was 83 degrees outside the mall when security found the child. The temperature inside the car was 105 degrees."The 1-year-old child was still sleeping, had red cheeks and was sweating," Grau said. "The child, once awake, did not need further medical assistance and was released to the care of the father."Krups told police that "she just went into the mall for a couple minutes and knew she left her child inside the vehicle," according to a citation.Police took Krups to the Boone County jail. She's charged with a first-degree felony.On the same day, a prosecutor in Warren County, Ohio announced he wouldn't bring charges against a mom whose daughter died in her car in August. Prosecutor David Fornshell and Warren County Coroner's Office investigator Doyle Burke said the toddler's mother, a P&G employee, left the 15-month-old unattended in her parked car for nine hours on Aug. 23.Fornshell, however, said the mother did not act recklessly. He said the little girl was well-cared for, healthy and her parents were "perhaps excessively" safety-conscious."By all accounts, these were really good parents," Fornshell said. Investigators talked to family members, coworkers and neighbors about the parents and daughter.Fornshell said he didn't believe charges were appropriate, nor did they match the legal standard in this case."The closest charge that might be applicable is involuntary manslaughter ... and the closest felony is endangering children, where parents create a substantial risk," Fornshell said. "However, in both of these, the mental state of a parent must be reckless."Recklessness is more than a mistake, even if it's a deadly mistake," Fornshell said.
