"While making sure dangerous people do not obtain weapons is a laudable goal for government, California's scheme goes too far and must be enjoined."The motion raised concerns about identification requirements and high rates of denials among ammunition buyers undergoing the new background checks. The figure is 45 percent higher than five years ago.Health officials are particularly concerned by the hike because 30 women had stillbirths due to congenital syphilis, the highest number since 1995.STDs can cause serious health problems if untreated. Syphilis can cause permanent loss of hearing, vision and neurological issues. Chlamydia and gonorrhea can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility, ectopic pregnancy and chronic pelvic pain."STDs are preventable by consistently using condoms, and many STDs can be cured with antibiotics," said CDPH Director and State Public Health Officer Dr. Karen Smith. "Regular testing and treatment are very important for people who are sexually active, even for people who have no symptoms. Most people infected with an STD do not know it."Chlamydia and gonorrhea rates are highest among people under age 30, health officials said. Rick Gates, the key prosecution witness in the tax and fraud trial of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, testified Monday he had committed crimes alongside and at the direction of his former partner -- and had also stolen from Manafort himself.In stunning testimony at Manafort's trial on tax and fraud charges, Gates stated he and Manafort had 15 foreign accounts they did not report to the federal government, and knew it was illegal. REXBURG, Idaho — Judge Faren Eddins says there is probable or sufficient cause that Chad Daybell committed the crimes he is accused of. Daybell is currently charged with two felony counts of Destruction, Alteration or Concealment of Evidence, and two felony counts of Conspiracy Destruction, Alteration, or Concealment of Evidence.The decision was made after a 10-minute recess. Daybell was emotionless as Judge Eddins announced his decision.Prosecutors played a recording of a jailhouse phone call between Lori Vallow and Daybell. The recording was made on the day authorities were searching for the bodies of Tylee Ryan and Joshua "JJ" Vallow. Soon after, the FBI and other law enforcement testified they found the bodies of the children in shallow graves on Daybell's property.There was no indication that either Lori or Chad was aware of the discovery, and they said nothing on the phone call about what they knew.Daybell's case now heads to District Court, where he will go before Judge Steven Boyce on August 21 for an arraignment. The defense has 60 days to file for a change of venue. No one has been charged in the deaths of the children.Lori is scheduled for a preliminary hearing with Judge Eddins next week on August 10 and 11.
