Rockland County, a suburb of New York City, is taking a big step when it comes to vaccination. Effective Wednesday, any unvaccinated child is banned from public places. Their parents could even face jail time. "Anyone who is under 18 years of age and is unvaccinated against the measles will be barred from public places until the declaration expires in 30 days,” announced Ed Day, a Rockland County executive. A state of emergency was declared in the county, following what officials say is the worst measles outbreak there in decades. As of this week, there have been 153 confirmed cases. "We have now the worst outbreak in the nation,” said Day. “The time has come to do something." Minors, excluding those with medical exemptions, are now barred from schools, churches and stores. Although police won't be patrolling vaccination records, leaders say parents could face jail time and fines. "If you have threats of being arrested and put in jail for 6 months because you choose not to inject your child with a pharmaceutical product, that’s the definition of fascism," argues Philip Silberman, an anti-vaxxer. The health choice advocate says this move is all part of a political agenda. "The agenda is to always just kind of eat away at our freedoms little by little by little," Silberman says. New York health officials don’t agree, saying this is a crisis that needs to be contained. "This is the law,” Day says in a public announcement. “It’s important for you to be part of the solution" 1510
Sports fans may be looking for other viewing options after another company has decided to drop regional sports networks from its channel lineup. Streaming service YouTube TV announced on Thursday that it will drop a number of regional sports networks that carry the a large number of MLB, NHL and NBA games throughout the country. The drop goes into effect on Saturday. The channels affected are FOX Regional Sports Networks. In total, more than a dozen channels spread throughout the country will no longer be on YouTube TV. For instance, sports fans in New York will no longer get the YES Network to watch New York Yankees games, or viewers in Ohio will no longer see Cleveland Cavs, Cincinnati Reds, Columbus Blue Jackets and Cleveland Indians games on Fox Sports Ohio and Sportstime Ohio."We do not take this decision lightly," YouTube TV said. "This is a reflection of the rising cost of sports content. You may have noticed several other TV services have also decided to remove FOX Regional Sports Networks from their lineups."The networks are owned by Sinclair, which purchased the networks last summer. The cost of regional sports networks to cable, satellite and streaming services have dramatically increased in recent years. This is largely due to the contracts signed between networks and pro sports teams. According to the 1348
Strong opioid dosage is the topic of a two-day public hearing by the Food and Drug Administration — which is trying to discern the benefits and risks. For Katrina King, her opioid addiction began with a back injury. It got so bad she spent two years behind bars after getting caught with forged prescriptions. King blames being put on high-dose medication too strong for her injury."The extended release — introducing that into the picture as such a potent dose so early in my diagnosis without trying anything else — ended up being catastrophic," she said. Some people have suggested the FDA remove high-dose opioids form the market to fight the deadly epidemic. Others argue the stronger meds are necessary to manage pain for some patients and getting rid of it could worsen pain for those people, leading to potential suicides."We don't want to cause additional suffering for people who have unmanageable pain that does make them feel they don't want to live anymore. On the other side of that, I would challenge the pharmaceutical industry and the FDA to come up with other methods of pain control," King said. The FDA will review public comments and decide whether to make change, which could include tougher regulations on reducing the use of high-dose opioids. 1276
