SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A local sailor got an emotional holiday surprise thanks to the generosity of some frequent fliers.Navy diesel mechanic Joe Ramsay just learned his brother is flying in for the holidays."Don't really have the words to describe it," said Ramsay.Ramsay has been stationed in San Diego for more than two years. After hernia surgery this summer, his finances got stretched. There would be no trip home to North Carolina for the holidays."I was going to spend it with friends or alone. That was pretty much my plans," said Ramsay.That wasn't the plan for Ramsay's brother Trey, who entered a contest put on by New York entrepreneur Peter Shankman. The businessman decided to collect and donate hundreds of thousands of airline miles in hopes of reuniting families."Just wanted to get to my brother for the holidays. I haven't seen him in a year or so," said Trey Ramsay.In his entry, Trey called his brother "the closest person in my life," adding the family hasn't been able to visit Joe since he arrived in San Diego. San Diegan Rhys Ford, a mystery writer who travels for her job, donated 45,000 miles and two tickets."It's seeing people reuniting. It's the fact that somebody's so excited to get on a plane. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man in his 70s was found dead at Sunset Cliffs Thursday afternoon after being reported missing, police confirm. According to the department, the body was discovered just after 1 p.m. near Froude Street and Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. Images from the scene showed crews working to remove the body at the bottom of a cliff. Police confirmed late Thursday evening that the body was that of a man in his mid-70s who was reported missing by his wife. The death has been ruled an accident. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A non-profit and business owner came together to donate thousands of dollars to families in need during the pandemic Wednesday.Non-profit Black San Diego started up in September with the goal of bolstering Black-owned businesses and giving them tools to succeed.They have a Facebook page with 36,000 members.On December 19th, Porschia Wyatt posted asking for prayers for her family."Recently my husband was laid off from his job, he works for the Cheesecake Factory, so time’s been hard for me and my family," she said.She and her husband have a 15-year-old daughter, 7 and 8-year-old sons and a 20-month old daughter.Getting Christmas presents was going to be hard, and November 16th made it even more difficult."I had just ate pizza and next thing you know I started throwing up and I couldn’t breath or anything so I was rushed to the hospital," she said she had an abdominal blockage.She underwent three surgeries and came home on the 25th. Now she had huge medical bills to worry about, which was what pushed her to type a message to the BSD community.She got an overwhelming response, more than a hundred comments and a surprise at her doorstep Wednesday morning.Jaime Harris, owner of Big Block Realty, was holding a giant check for ,000."There are so many families that are affected you know? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Marine died Saturday night after being hit by a car in the Midway district. San Diego Police say the crash happened around 7 p.m. on the 2700 block of Midway Drive. According to police, the man in his early 20s left a bar in the area when he walked or fell onto Midway Drive before being struck by a car. Police are checking surveillance cameras in the area to identify the driver, who left after the crash. A woman who lives in the area says cars often speed on the road and that there are few places to cross the street.“Like almost a half a mile down, and so if you're gonna cross, you can either walk extra far or you can jaywalk'; a lot of people you do you see jaywalking,” Quinn Dekker told 10News. 736

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego artist wants to paint murals around the city that she hopes can help bring an end to gun violence."My concept is just something beautiful that people can take a picture in front of and just really enjoy the artwork of it but also take a message away from it," says Hanna Daly.Her concept is a series of artworks that look like colorful doorways. Each will have a message written above them, like 'Thoughts and Prayers Aren't Enough.""I thought it could be, like, a doorway to change," Daly says. "You walk away from it thinking, maybe there's a little something I can do. Like a doorway you step through it and now you're part of the cause."Daly became part of the cause last year, when her brother comitted suicide. He had shot himself in the head."Then a few weeks after that was Las Vegas," she says. "And then another shooting and another. It just kept hitting me, so I finally thought I should do something."Daly is working with with the Brady Campaign and Moms Demand Action on the project. She has the designs, just not the space to paint them."We need some people with some great walls out there that are visible, on main drags, where people are going to see it, where we can create some beautiful art, but that has a strong message," she says.She's hoping to paint the murals in high traffic areas like the Gaslamp District or along the boardwalks near beaches.
