SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Downtown San Diego Partnership is relaunching a program to help businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.A new round of the organization's Downtown Loyalty program launches at noon on Tuesday. It allows people to buy discounted gift cards to some of downtown's most recognizable restaurants, coffee shops, retail, and services."It's a digital gift card sale," said Sarah Brothers, marketing and communications director for the Downtown San Diego Partnership. "So you're able to buy a gift card to your favorite downtown locations. And for every purchase, you get a free funded by philanthropy."It allows the customer to get more than what they paid for, and it's extra revenue for the business at the receiving end.The program is made possible through fundraising and donations.The first round of the Downtown Loyalty program's gift card sale sold out in four days when it launched in July. It provided nearly ,000 in direct revenue to struggling businesses in downtown San Diego. There is hope the second round of gift card sales will have even more significant impact, with nearly ,000 to support businesses. 1163
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The next great food craze could come from the waters of the San Diego Bay. A pair of scientists is planting a seaweed farm in the bay, to test the plant's marketability for use as food, animal feed, fertilizer, and bio-fuel."Kelp is the new kale," says Torre Polizzi, one of the owners of Sunken Seaweed.Polizzi and his partner Leslie Booher just got a 7,000 grant from the Port of San Diego to start a test-farm in the bay. They'll get 4,000 square feet of water off the end of the Grape Street Pier to use for their plants.RELATED: Drone testing gives boost to Chula Vista economyIt's part of the Port's "Blue Economy" project, which is designed to help incubate new businesses along the waterfront."San Diego needs to take notice of the ocean economy," says Port CEO Rafel Castellanos. "We're incredibly optimistic, we believe in ocean optimism, and we're looking forward to really developing this sector."The seaweed industry can be incredibly lucrative. "They're wildly supportive of using kelp and seaweed in their dishes."The farm will be entirely underwater and be filled with several species of seaweed. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The California Highway Patrol said a person arrested at gunpoint on Interstate 15 in San Diego Thursday was suspected of driving illegally in the HOV lane and leading an officer on a pursuit.The chase happened on southbound I-15 just south of Aero Dr. at 5:30 p.m.Officers said the driver was in the high-occupancy vehicle lane and failed to pull over, leading to the brief pursuit.There are no reports of any injuries or a reason why the driver did not yield for the traffic stop.10News is monitoring developments in the story. 555
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The addition of 536 new homes on a former golf course in Rancho Penasquitos won't clog the one road leading out of the neighborhood in the event of an emergency evacuation, according to a new city study. The city released the environmental impact reporter for Lennar's Juniper proposal on Wednesday. Lennar is proposing to turn the languishing course behind the old Hotel Karlan on Penasquitos Drive into 536 housing units for senior citizens, including 81 affordable. The project also includes a nearly three acre public park, a three-mile trail. The environmental document analyzes impacts such as noise and traffic. It also looked at how the additional homes would impact evacuations in the northeast portion of Rancho Penasquitos, a neighborhood with only one road in and out. The document said there would be a less than significant impact on getting out fast for two reasons - first, a wildfire that starts in the Black Mountain Open Space park to the west would be blown away from the site by Santa Ana winds. Secondly, the site is not prone to wildfire because it is protected by developed terrain. "As part of the EIR, a fire risk analysis determined potential impacts related to wildfire hazards from implementation of the project would be less than significant and the project’s Wildland Fire Evacuation Plan demonstrates that timely evacuation of the site is feasible and would be improved by the additional roadway and emergency egress connections provided by the project," said city spokesman Anthony Santacroce. Additionally, plans call for adding a road into and out of the Juniper complex from Carmel Mountain Road, with emergency access. It would add a traffic light and roundabout to Penasquitos Drive, and improve an emergency access road on the opposite side of the neighborhood. Still, a group of residents is raising concerns that the Juniper project, combined with another potential 350 on the hotel site, would clog the one road leaving the area. Junaid Razvi, who heads the Penasquitos Northeast Action Group, noted Santa Ana winds are unpredictable and has had to evacuate three times in the last 15 years. "To put it mildly, I don't think we're getting the whole picture here," said Razvi. "We are not nimbys. I think the development has to be sensible terms of density, the access, ingress and egress points."Razvi's group said it plans to meet with Councilman Mark Kersey in the next few weeks to air their concerns. In a statement, the councilman said he understands where they are coming from. "Given our region's history, I understand and share residents' concerns about wildfire preparedness," he said. "Nothing is more important to me than public safety, especially when it comes to fire risk, and fire safety will be a primary concern when I evaluate any development proposal that comes before the City Council for approval."San Diegans have until April 6 to submit their comments on the EIR. 2957
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The COVID-19 pandemic has left a big question mark in regards to NCAA athletics. However, that is not the case with California Junior Colleges, otherwise known as the CCCAA, as they have already come up with a plan for the fall. That means for the next 5 months, athletic fields at Mesa College will be quiet until early 2021."There was a lot of talk," says Mesa College Athletic Director Ryan Schumaker, "and a lot of plans, that included getting sports back on the field quicker. But it just didn't seem feasible, especially when we saw the state start to take steps backwards. It just seemed like the right thing to do, to push it back as far as we could."So in the case of Mesa College, all 21 of their athletic teams will not get started until some point in the spring."The goal is to get our student athletes on campus safely, as well as our staff," says Mesa College Head Football Coach Gary Watkins. "I know we won't start practice until February, but there may be some time in January to get in front of the boys. At that time, will get them acclimated physically and mentally. Now, more than ever, they have to be all in on their academics, and their future development."And with will all sports being pushed back until the spring, the athletic department at Mesa will have to figure out how to share the facilities."The spring is now split into two distinct seasons.
