JAMUL, Calif. (KGTV) - A Jamul woman whose home was destroyed by the Valley Fire is grateful for the "miracle" just feet from her burned house.Around 4 p.m. Saturday, single mom Kimberlee Jones was with her kids, ages 5 and 3, inside their home on Bunny Drive when she smelled the smoke."The plume was huge, black and brown. The wind was carrying it over the house and I knew we were in big trouble," said Jones. She saw the towering flames a few miles away, as sirens began blaring on her street.RELATED COVERAGEVALLEY FIRE: Resources on where to get help, air quality, and animal sheltersINTERACTIVE MAP: Valley Fire erupts in Japatul Valley areaPhotos: Valley Fire erupts in East County“They’ve asked to make sure that I pin them. And you can buy a new uniform, yeah, but you’d like to wear the one you wore,” he said, holding back tears."The flames seemed like they were walking as they went from one bush to the next. I screamed, ran inside, and grabbed my kids," said a tearful Jones. With no time to take anything, Jones put her kids and their dog in the truck, drove off, and got to safety. About an hour later, she and a friend tried to go back with a trailer for her horses, 11 of them in several outside paddocks. A few miles from her home, she was turned away by deputies. She took a photo of the raging flames, which had moved past her property. She didn't know the fate of home and horses."I just kept praying things would be okay. From the direction of the fire and the winds, I knew we probably would not have a home to go home to," said Jones.A day later, the fears about her home were confirmed. Animal rescue crews, which included a neighbor, snapped a photo of her home of five years, burned to the foundation.RELATED COVERAGE:Red Cross evacuation sites provide outdoor shelter and hotel lodging amid pandemicABC 10News forecast for San Diego County"Felt devastated. There's nothing left," said Jones. But near the ashes, about 50 feet away and not far from some burned fences, a rescuer made a remarkable discovery: The horses were in their paddocks, alive."It's a miracle all of my horses made it out and no worse for wear," said Jones.Jones is now bracing herself for the long road to recovery. She says she will always be grateful."The things I could never replace are alive and well. It's incredible we're all okay," said Jones.A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help the Jones family with their recovery. 2439

JULIAN, Calif. (KGTV) -- The threat of wildfires in Julian may be going down. SDG&E is installing underground power lines to help mitigate the fire risk. The project is also expected to keep critical facilities open during pre-emptive power outages. Not only will the work help prevent fires, it may also help keep power running when Santa Ana winds start picking up. Crews were hard at work Tuesday putting underground power lines near State Route 78 in Julian. RELATED: City of San Diego moves forward with undergrounding more power linesThe project is part of SDG&E’s effort to reduce the risk of wildfires and shutting down power during windy weather. It will help keep the power running to places like Julian’s schools, post office, library and their Cal Fire station. Phase one of the project is being done along Cape Horn Avenue. Many homes and facilities have lost power there during shutoffs in the past. While residents in Julian were happy about the changes, they know it won’t happen overnight. RELATED: Map: City of San Diego underground utility lines“To put all those lines underground is gonna be a major undertaking,” said resident Michael Lang. Phase two of the project will add underground lines along the 78. Currently, there is no timeline on when the project will begin. 1308

Judge Amy Coney Barrett described during her confirmation hearing Tuesday the "personal" and "difficult" conversations her family was forced to have following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis earlier this year.Barrett is the mother of nine children. Two of those children are adopted and are Black."As you can imagine, given that I have two Black children, that was very, very, personal to me and my family," Barrett said.Barrett said her husband and her sons were on a camping trip when a video went viral that showed Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin kneeling on Floyd's neck for more than eight minutes prior to Floyd's death. Barrett described watching the video with her adoptive daughter, Vivian."For her to understand that there might be a risk to her brother — or a son she might have one day — of that kind of brutality has been an ongoing conversation," Barrett said. "And a difficult one like it has been happening for Americans all over the country."Barrett added that it was especially difficult for some of her younger children to grasp."My children, to this point in their lives, have had the benefit of growing up in a cocoon where they have not yet experienced hatred or violence," she said.Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, then asked if she felt that if she believes overt or systemic racism existed in America."I think it is an entirely uncontroversial and obvious statement given, as we just talked about, the George Floyd video, that racism exists in our country," Barrett said. However, she stopped short of calling racism in America "systemic," saying that in her role as a judge that she was unable to do so."As to the nature of putting my finger on the problem...or how to tackle the issue of making it better, those things are policy questions," Barrett said. "They're hotly contested policy questions that have been in the news and discussed all summer. As I did share my personal experience — and I'm happy to discuss the reaction our family had to the George Floyd video — giving broader statements or making broader diagnoses is beyond what I'm capable of doing as a judge." 2123
