ENCINITAS, California — A California woman says she was scammed at a gas station by a performance 'worthy of an Oscar.'"We pull in and my husbands about to pump in the gas," said Alice. An ordinary trip to fill up turned eventful last month at a Shell gas station in North County, California."I see a man pull up in a black SUV, brand new and shiny," said Alice. Alice says a man in his 30s got out of the GMC Yukon and approached them."He was in head-to-toe designer clothes," said Alice. In the backseat were a well-dressed woman and a little girl."He says, 'Excuse me, Sir. I'm here vacationing from Dubai with my family and my wallet was stolen,'" said Alice. The man asked for some money for gas and then took out a ring."Here, take my ring. It's worth 0. I have money and plenty of jewelry at home. I just need money for gas and food," said Alice.Alice told the man to keep the ring and then had her husband put in on a pump with their credit card."I believed their story ... I put myself in their shoes. I would be devastated, and I would want someone to help me," said Alice.Days later, she learned from her cousin in Los Angeles those strangers were scammers."I was the fourth person she knew of personally that this happened to. I was duped," Alice said.Then this past Wednesday, she was back at the gas station and filling up, when she saw something familiar. It was another new GMC Yukon.Inside was a different family. She saw them talking with a young man, before pulling out a ring."I ran over put my hand in front of the guy and said, 'You should be ashamed of yourself. This is a scam!" Alice said.She learned the family had a similar story about vacationing from Dubai. The SUV sped off."It makes me angry. It's the giving season and they take advantage of that. They're actors. They played their part perfectly. They're going to get an Oscars, and I handed them the award," said Alice.Alice believes both vehicles had out-of-state license plates. She says she contacted the sheriff's department but was told this incident would likely be defined as panhandling, which isn't a crime. 2115

Farmers are empowering America's future farmers through technology, as the agriculture industry becomes more dependent on modern equipment.Farmers are realizing the next generation needs to know how to use the latest and greatest tech tools.Andrew Nelson is a fifth-generation farmer in Eastern Washington who utilizes such as drones on his farm.“Me and my wife and two children live here on the farm in the exact same spot that my parents and grandparents lived,” Nelson said.“We had a few little homesteads that my grandparents set up for their children all within the same small area,” Nelson added.Even when he went off to college, he knew he'd one day come back. He then merged his love of technology with his love of family and farming.“I love to build things, (which) is my biggest draw to farming and software engineering,” Nelson said. “That’s why I wanted to combine the two to build digital and Ag. stuff together.”So now, he has two day jobs. He farms 8,500 acres of wheat, beans, peas and lentils. And, he's a software engineer. He is also a father, which also keeps him occupied. When asked if he'll be teaching his kids about farming and if he'd like them to have agriculture careers, he said, "If they want to. I don’t want to force them but living out here and having the exposure -- yesterday my son was on the combine with me for four hours so it’s likely they’ll want to.”Passing knowledge on to the next generation is another passion of his.“I like having the students in our high school be able to see the various opportunities in agriculture,” Nelson said. “If they’re thinking they’ll go to school for software engineering, that doesn’t mean you can’t be in agriculture as well.”The students, he says, like his drone technology. Nelson works with FarmBeats, a program within Microsoft that helps farmers use technology to drive their business. Drones give him a lot of data, and can even spray his crops. He even has sensors in his fields and grain storage.Megan Wilson, an agricultural education teacher and FFA advisor at a local high school, admits some of the tech that Nelson uses is out of this world.“I even get a little confused by some of the stuff Andrew does, so that is very complicated stuff but you know it used to be that we would plop a farmer in a tractor but now we have so many more options even from a driving aspect,” Wilson said.But she says the students who work with Nelson are intrigued.“They have been doing it since they are knee high and used to doing it the old fashioned way. When they see a computer, they’re mind blown; they don’t believe that’s how you can move into farming and we are moving in that direction,” Wilson said.She says FFA isn't what it once was and it's not just about farming.“It used to be cows, plows and sows and that’s what we did. We showed animals and played in the dirt and that’s what people thought of FFA,” Wilson said.They work with students in the agriculture world to incorporate science, technology, public speaking and interview skills. Wilson says they'd be doing them a disservice if they didn't teach all of that. Nelson says it's a win-win situation."It’s great to get their perspective because they think about problems in different ways than we do,” Nelson said. “hat’s why I like to show them what we’re working on and what the new possibilities are because you never know what student is going to ask that question that causes a big change.” 3446

Erie County Legislator Lynne Dixon announced a proposed expansion of 'Social Host Law' to include opioids. The original law was passed in 2014 to curb underage drinking. According to law, it "will serve to deter the consumption of alcoholic beverages by minor by holding those persons who are 21 years old or more responsible when they knowingly allow the consumption of alcoholic beverages by minors at their residences or on their privately owned property."The Erie County Sheriff's Office have been called to 81 instances of youth activity underage drinking since Jan. 1, 2017. The goal of the new expansion of the law is to hold parents and adults accountable for the actions of minors in their home or on their property for the use of underage drinking, illegal use of opioid and substances.Any person who violates the law will be fined. The first offense is punished by a fine of 0. The second offense is punished by 0. The third offense is punished by either a fine of 00 or prison for one year, or both.   1070

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) -- The city of Encinitas has voted to move forward with a plan to create a safe parking lot for people living out of their cars. The city council voted 4-1 to start negotiating with Jewish Family Service, with the goal of opening the safe parking lot by the end of the year. Both supporters and opponents spoke during Wednesday's city council meeting, 30 in favor and 15 opposed. Those opposed to the lot said they were worried about their safety and property values. Those in favor said this would help people get back on their feet and keep them from becoming chronically homeless. The lot will be operated by Jewish Family Service on the Leichtag Foundation's property. Once the plan is finalized it will operate 365 days a year, seven days a week from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. It will have overnight security, bathrooms, hand-washing stations, food and resources to help people get back into permanent housing. Everyone is vetted to make sure candidates don't have any violent criminal conviction and are not on the registered sex offender list. The city says the plan won't cost taxpayers a dime. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - A beloved custodian at an elementary school in Encinitas is recovering after a spider bite led to an amputation."He's happy. He's smiling. Thankful he's alive," said Megan Luce, PTA President at Park Dale Lane Elementary School.Guil Aguilar has been a custodian at the school for more than five years."His spirits are so high when I visited," said Luce.Luce says his ordeal began at work, just before Thanksgiving break. Aguilar says as he was moving trash cans near a dumpster, he saw spiders but didn't think anything of it. After he left the area, he felt a twinge in his foot. He went with family to visit relatives in Arizona during Thanksgiving and his bite began to swell. He was admitted into a hospital, then transferred to an Encinitas hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with a venomous spider bite. The type of spider is unknown. The treatment was not enough."There was an infection that they tried to clean out. The infection resulted in amputation of his foot and partial leg," said Luce.Luce says Aguilar handled the difficult news by focusing on the bright side."He was okay with it. He'd rather his foot be gone than his life," said Luce.As news of his ordeal spread, parents at the school rallied."I was heartbroken. He's such as an amazing, amazing person ... Always happy. He's always there to help. Goes over and beyond what he's supposed to do at the school," said Luce.The parents organized a meal train and a Gofundme campaign to help his family, including his five children, with expenses."He's not just a janitor. He's part of the community and part of the Park Dale Lane family," said Luce.The Encinitas Union School District issued the following statement: "The situation that you are inquiring about involves one of our employees and is currently under investigation by the District. Due to privacy rights and confidentiality laws, we are unable to provide an update on the employee ... In an abundance of caution, the District has taken the necessary precautions to ensure that all areas of campus have been inspected and are safe.
