SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Petco Park in downtown San Diego is being transformed into a destination for those looking for family-friendly Halloween fun.From Oct. 23-Nov. 1, the San Diego Padres are hosting The Halloween Trail at Petco Park – an event described as “a socially distanced one-way Halloween-themed trail and pumpkin patch in Gallagher Square where guests will have the opportunity to visit various themed booths, collect candy and toys and partake in the spooky festivities.”As guests journey on the decorated Halloween Trail, booths will be in place to offer treats “via contactless delivery.”After completing the trail, guests can enjoy their candy or purchased food/drinks while watching a Halloween move in the park -- all while socially distanced.Adults 21 and over will have their own special Halloween experience: “The Halloween Trail at Petco Park Movie Night, a special outdoor movie experience for adults 21 and up complete with Halloween snacks and a Halloween-favorite movie. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Newly-released census numbers show residents are fleeing California in sizable numbers.Angie Romero of was outside a U-Haul trailer, packed with rented wine barrels she will be using as decor for her 50th birthday party.  She'll likely be renting another U-Haul in the not-so-distant future."The cost of living puts you in another mindset.  I'm getting older and start wondering about my future," said Romero.Romero, who works in sales, plans on packing up and leaving the state within the next two years.  One reason: the rent for her apartment near San Diego."I've lived there three years, and every year it's gone up either or ," said Romero.Romero is hardly alone. According to the latest census numbers, in the year-span ending July 2017, adding up all the people moving into and out of California translates into a net loss of 138,000 people. In San Diego County, there is also an apparent exodus with a net loss of nearly 16,000 people in the year ending in July 2017. In the previous year, there was a loss of 8,300 people.         1148

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are investigating after a woman was found dead in Tecolote Canyon Park Saturday. According to San Diego Police, the woman’s body was found Saturday at an unspecified time near a hiking trail in Tecolote Canyon Park. Police believe the woman was in her mid to late 20s. RELATED: Body found floating in the ocean by good Samaritan“Out of an abundance of caution, San Diego Police Homicide Detectives were called to the scene and are currently investigating the incident,” police said. The victim has not been identified at this time. The medical examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death. One fact is clear: those countries that have managed to safely reopen schools have done so with declining infection rates and on-demand testing available. California has neither. The skyrocketing infection rates of the past few weeks make it clear the pandemic is not under control," the district said.SDUSD's 2020-2021 school year will start as scheduled on Aug. 31, officials said Monday. "That assessment will be based on local measures of whether the virus is sufficiently under control, as well as progress on testing and federal action on funding," the district said.The district will be announcing more information about its online learning program on Aug. 10. The district had previously offered families an option of in-person or online distance learning.Monday's announcement comes as President Donald Trump continues to put pressure on states to open school campuses. Last week, Trump threatened to withhold federal money if schools don’t reopen in the fall.The district has said it has enough state funding to operate for the first half of the year but will rely on federal funding for the spring semester. Much has changed since that time: New research is available, additional information on school safety experiences from around the world, and updated health guidelines from state and county leaders.Unfortunately, much of the research is incomplete and many of the guidelines are vague and contradictory. One fact is clear: those countries that have managed to safely reopen schools have done so with declining infection rates and on-demand testing available. California has neither. The skyrocketing infection rates of the past few weeks make it clear the pandemic is not under control.Therefore, we are announcing that the new school year will start online only. Instruction will resume on Aug.18 in Los Angeles Unified and Aug. 31 in San Diego Unified, as previously scheduled. Both districts will continue planning for a return to in-person learning during the 2020-21 academic year, as soon as public health conditions allow.This announcement represents a significant disappointment for the many thousands of teachers, administrators and support staff, who were looking forward to welcoming students back in August. It is obviously an even greater disappointment to the many parents who are anxious for their students to resume their education. Most of all, this decision will impact our students in ways that researchers will take years to understand.Our leaders owe it to all of those impacted by the COVID-19 closures to increase the pace of their work. No one should use the delay in the reopening of classrooms as a reason to relax. The coronavirus has not taken a summer vacation, as many had hoped. Indeed, the virus has accelerated its attacks on our community.The federal government must provide schools with the resources we need to reopen in a responsible manner.In the past four months, we have provided more than 47 million meals to families, distributed more than 250,000 computers to students and trained more than 35,000 educators in online learning.
