SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It will take about a month to get the old Family Courthouse in downtown San Diego demolished and the area cleaned up, and once it’s gone, work will begin on what will replace it -- brand new affordable housing units.Piece by piece, the building that once heard divorce, custody, and other domestic issues was torn down. In its place will be a new eight-story building with 120 affordable housing units at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Cedar Street. While it’s been vacant, it was used as a temporary shelter for migrant families seeking asylum. Soon it will become home to senior citizens and other families. To be eligible for this affordable housing, a household must make less than 60% of the area median Income. For San Diego, according to the San Diego County website, it is less than ,000 for one person.County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said the location plays a big part in this project.“Everyone one wants affordable housing as long as it's not near them, but we know this is where housing needs to go. This location is in an urban environment in a downtown setting along transit corridors, walking distance to services is where we need to go,” Fletcher said. After the building is demolished, the next step in this project will be to get community input on the design of the unit. They don’t expect to break ground until 2024. 1365

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Mayor Kevin Faulconer detailed his plan to bolster San Diego's infrastructure in a proposed budget Tuesday. The plan calls for a total of about 3 million in investments into the city's streets, parks, and water system — among other improvements. The investment in infrastructure is the largest in San Diego's history, according to the mayor's office. The investments are part of the mayor's proposed .8 billion budget, which City Council leaders are set to adopt at a June 11 meeting.RELATED: San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer unveils 2019 budget"After decades of neglect, we have a lot more to do, which is why I’m focused on fixing more streets, building more parks and making more neighborhood upgrades than ever before," Faulconer said in a release. "We also need to invest in aging buildings like those in Balboa Park so they stand the test of time and that’s exactly what this budget will do."Here's a look at some of the financial commitments the mayor's plan proposes:Pure Water: Among the commitments is a 1 million investment into Pure Water San Diego to create an independent, drought-proof local water supply for San Diego. That project is expected to break ground in 2019.RELATED: San Diego is tops for walkable parks, study showsBalboa Park & fire stations: Also on the docket are 1 million in repairs for local libraries, fire stations, lifeguard stations, and recreation centers. The funds will also see new roofing installed for Balboa Park's Mingei International Museum and Air & Space Museum.Transportation: The plan puts 8 million toward transportation projects which consist of road paving, traffic signals, sidewalk improvements, and bridges. This includes funding to fix about 390 miles of streets.Parks & Rec: Mission Bay Park, Chollas Lake, Hickman Field Athletic Area, and Skyline Hills Community Park will see .5 million in park upgrades, including new lighting, trail realignments, and ADA improvements.Water system: Faulconer's proposal also includes .6 million for stormwater upgrades to channels, pumps, storm drain pipes, and watersheds.Faulconer's entire proposed budget can be viewed on the city's website. 2230

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Just a few hours, and a few miles apart, San Diego Mayoral candidates Todd Gloria and Barbary Bry launched their final push for the upcoming election.A recent ABC 10News/Union-Tribune Survey USA poll shows a statistical dead-heat between the two candidates, with Gloria holding a slim 39-38% advantage over Bry. But that same poll also shows 24% of voters are still undecided."It's in times like these you want to be in the fight," Gloria said while holding an event outside of his campaign headquarters.Gloria spent the morning surrounded by the Local 145 Firefighters Union, as well as County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher and Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher. Gloria told ABC 10News his experience makes him the best candidate."The stakes will only get higher. And if the right people with the right priorities aren't in these positions, the things you care about the most just fall away," said Gloria.Bry, meanwhile, led a car caravan through parts of South San Diego, highlighting the ways she wants to invest in the poorest neighborhoods. She says the coronavirus pandemic highlights the need to bring new jobs to those areas."It is so important to diversify our economy away from tourism and to train the next generation for higher-paying jobs in tech and biotech construction, accounting, finance, and to help those who will still be working in our hospitality sector get back on their feet," says Bry.A recent SANDAG study shows 176,000 San Diegans are still unemployed from the Pandemic, and the region will lose .4 billion in 2020. The recovery will likely be the next mayor's biggest challenge."It is time for the residents of San Diego to take back City Hall. To take it from the special interest that had been running the city for too long," says Bry."Whether it's the COVID pandemic, the resulting economic recession, the demands for racial justice, or the climate crisis, there are a multitude of challenges, all coming at once. I think that demands a leader with experience and I happen to be that candidate," says Gloria. 2072
