CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV)- A Hilltop High School alumnus who graduated in 1972 is more grateful for one of her teachers on the anniversary of D-Day. Kathy Cappos Hardy had Mr. Tom Rice as a United States Government teacher her senior year of high school. She tells 10News, “the way he enlivened it and related it to our lives made it truly something important to me”. Cappos Hardy has vivid memories of Rice and even says she pursued her career in education because of his impact he had on her. It wasn’t until about 20 years ago when Cappos Hardy realized her US Government teacher was also one of the thousands of troops who stormed the beaches of Normandy, France during World War II. 97-year-old Tom Rice is from Coronado. He was a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division who landed in Normandy on June 6, 1944. On D-Day, Cappos Hardy wrote an editorial thanking her teacher for his service in and out of the classroom. Now, she’s not only hoping he sees it, but that she also gets a chance to tell him thank you when he returns from Normandy. “I hope he knows that there are a lot of us that admire him not only as a teacher but what he did prior to that.” Cappos Hardy tells 10News. 1203

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A Chula Vista police officer shot and killed a man who stabbed him several times in the face Tuesday night.Two officers got a call from a resident on Melrose Ave. who said a man threw a piece of concrete the size of a baseball at his head abouut 9 p.m.The officers determined the man was at a home on Monterey Ave. and went to the address at 10:25 p.m., police said.A woman opened the home's front door to the two officers.  The man began assaulting the first officer, police said, and they scuffled.Police tell 10News the man stabbed the officer up to half a dozen times in the head and face. The officer fired several times in self-defense, police said.At least one shot hit the man, who died on his way to the hospital.  CVPD identified him as 27-year-old David Scott.The second officer and the department chaplain, who was on a ridealong, were able to assist the injured officer. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Federal and local authorities, in addition to hazmat crews, were called out to the scene of a drug raid in Chula Vista after agents found fentanyl and THC extraction on the property. The raid happened at a home on 2nd Avenue Wednesday afternoon. DEA officials confirmed the search warrant was part of an ongoing investigation. DEA agents arrested one man during their search, and he is suspected of mixing fentanyl with other illegal drugs, according to a DEA spokesperson. Agents did not identify the man or disclose the amount of drugs found. The hazardous materials teams were summoned to the scene to investigate any possible contamination in the neighborhood and to process the drugs that were discovered. 747

(KGTV) - A woman who was struck by a vehicle in Chula Vista Thursday night died of her injuries in the hospital, according to Chula Vista Police.Dispatchers received several 911 calls about the crash at Fourth Ave and C Street at 9:15 p.m. The location is near a CVS pharmacy and Jack in the Box.Officers said they found the 57-year-old victim in the intersection with serious injuries. She was taken to UCSD Hospital for treatment but later died.An investigation showed that the woman had entered the crosswalk on a red light, police said.Chula Vista Police are asking anyone with information to call 619-691-5151. 643
