(KGTV) - Scientists at the Sanford Consortium at UC San Diego will send brain tissue to space on Saturday, as part of the latest Space X launch."It sounds like science fiction, but it's actually happening right now," says Dr. Alysson Muotri, the Director of the UC San Diego Stem Cell program.He's leading a research team to study how zero-gravity environments will affect brain growth."We know from several previous studies that the human body has not evolved to deal with micro-gravity," Muotri says. "We suffer under these conditions. And the brain is also vulnerable."Muotri's team uses stem cells to create microscopic brain-organoids, tiny brain cells that will grow like a human brain.They'll send 100 of the brain-organoid cells to the International Space Station for 30 days.When the cells return, the scientists will compare them to similar cells grown in the lab on Earth, to find any differences caused by a month in space.Muotri says this study is key to helping humans in the quest to live off of Earth."The cells might age faster," he says. "That's a consequence of being under micro-gravity for long periods of time. So the brain might age. That might make you susceptible to cognitive decline, dementia or maybe Alzheimer's."Muotri says it's also essential to find out how a developing brain would grow because it could impact any pregnancy and gestation that happens in outer space."The human brain during gestation grows in a speed that's amazingly fast," says Muotri. "In space, we think that will be aggravated. It will be even bigger. So you can imagine a baby with a large brain, it might not pass through the birth channel. Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer throughout the U.S. — and the Denver area seemingly took that to heart by skipping straight to winter on Tuesday.Just after noon on Monday, Denver recorded temperatures of over 90 degrees. Less than 24 hours later, temperatures had plummeted to near freezing, and snow was falling in parts of the city.A powerful cold front was the culprit for the sharp change in temperatures. The system will bring winter weather to the Denver area through Wednesday evening.According to meteorologists with Scripps station KMGH in Denver, between 3 and 7 inches of snow is expected to fall in the Front Range corridor by early Wednesday.There are also freeze warnings in effect for the Colorado plains east of Denver, where temperatures are expected to dip below freezing by Wednesday morning.Officials fear the early freeze could damage crops, some of which are about to be harvested. Officials also fear that a deep freeze with full foliage could cause tree limbs to snap and cause power outages in the area.KMGH reports that Denver's earliest snow of the season came Sept. 3, 1961, when a Labor Day storm brought 4.2 inches to the city's airport and dumped nearly a foot in the western suburbs and foothills. On Sept. 8, 1962, Denver saw its earliest freeze of the season when temperatures dipped to 31 degrees.Wednesday's snowfall was Denver's earliest in the last decade. The previous record for earlier snowfall in the last 10 years came Oct. 5, 2012. Last year's first snow came earlier than usual on Oct. 10 — still a full month earlier than Tuesday's snowfall.The enormous temperature swing between Monday and Tuesday could also turn out to be the largest swing on record. The previous record occurred on Jan. 25, 1872, when the temperature dropped 66 degrees, from 46 degrees to -20 degrees.Monday also marked Denver's 73rd day in 2020 with temperatures in the 90s, which ties an all-time record. But according to one credit expert, there are some simple financial moves that parents can make right now to set up their kids for future financial success.Building credit isn't priority number one for kids, but it could open or close a lot of doors down the road."Good credit can make things easier for you in the future, whether it's securing loans, credit cards with better terms and rates. It might even help your ability to land a job or a desirable apartment," said Nathan Grant, a senior credit industry analyst at CreditCardInsider.com.Grant says that even though kids can't open their own bank account until their 18, parents can start teaching kids about credit long before that, perhaps with a prepaid card."Many of those allow for monthly direct deposits. So, you could have their allowance loaded directly on their card, and that could, at an early age, give them a way to understand budgeting and using a card that has a limit on it to teach them better spending habits," Grant said.Then, as children approach adulthood, Grant says that parents should consider making them an authorized user on a family credit card. Even if parents are not ready to let kids make purchases and payments on the card, Grant says just making them an authorized user will help them build credit."Many credit card issuers offer this, and most issuers report the account's activity in the authorized user's name, whether or not they are actually using the account. So, you can add them as a user and not give them access. It will hopefully build their credit up right out of the gate," Grant said.When kids are ready for their own cards, parents shouldn't just pick the shiniest piece of plastic. Grant says a secured credit card could be a safer option for someone with little or no credit."It uses a refundable security deposit that you fund yourself to fund the account's credit limit, upon approval," Grant said. "So, there's less risk on the issuer's part. So, for somebody who is new to credit or doesn't have any credit history, that could get your foot in the door.Grant said he couldn't offer advice either way on whether grads should pay for college with credit. But he said that anyone that decides to take a "gap year" should try to pay off any existing debts and save for the future.For those that do decide to go attend college, Grant has some general advice."The best rule of thumb, on top of just general responsible use, is just try not to use your credit card for purchases you know you won't be able to pay off before that monthly due date," he said.
