SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The mother of Rebecca Zahau testified Thursday in the second day of the civil lawsuit surrounding the Coronado mansion death.Rebecca Zahau died in July 2011. Her nude, bound body was found hanging from the balcony of the Spreckels mansion.The death was officially declared a suicide but Zahau's family disagreed. They filed a wrongful death civil lawsuit against Adam Shacknai, the brother of Zahau's boyfriend.Shacknai’s lawyers argue there is no physical, eyewitness, or scientific evidence linking him to Zahau’s death.Zahau's mother, Pari Zahau, took the witness stand Thursday morning and gave an emotional testimony as she was asked questions about her daughter.She remembered her as a sweet, loving and religious woman. The jury has three days off and will hear testimony again Monday.The family’s attorney Keith Greer handed Pari Zahau a piece of evidence and asked her to describe what it was.It was an envelope full of cash from Rebecca Zahau addressed to Pari Zahau and her late husband.Pari Zahau explained to the jury her daughter would support her financially by sending cash every month. That envelope was never sent, although one of the final times Pari Zahau talked to her daughter, she was told it would be on the way soon.Pari Zahau had to take a break from testifying when lawyer Keith Greer asked, “Did you ever think Rebecca would kill herself?”She gave a tearful response saying, “No. No, never. Never. My daughter? No. She is very sweet girl and she is very strong. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Sunday, San Diego County health officials reported 568 new coronavirus cases and three new community outbreaks, including one at a preschool.The county's new cases were out of 8,943 reported tests, a 6% positive rate, and brought the region's total to 23,682 cases.The three new community outbreaks were reported in a restaurant/bar, in a manufacturing facility, and in a preschool, the county said. Moisture entering the region will increase humidity, and humidity overnight will lead to overnight lows staying warmer, which means an extended period of heat with less overnight relief can be expected.This is a trend that is becoming more and more common. Climate researchers from Scripps Institution of Oceanography studied the history of these warmer, prolonged and humid stretches in the San Diego area, and found that periods similar to this are on the rise.“What we found is that heatwaves in Southern California, and I would say California more broadly, have been increasing over time in their frequency and tendency,” said researcher Dan Cayan.The lack of overnight cooling means no break from the heat at night, so the long stretch of days of increased temperatures combined with a lack of overnight relief could lead to dangerous conditions.“It’s a lot easier to contend with a heatwave that lasts a day or two than one that lasts four days,” said Cayan.Cayan said this is part of a larger picture of climate change impact, and this trend will likely continue in the years to come.Humidity can make temperatures feel worse. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The man suspected of opening fire on U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents at the border Monday has been named.San Diego Police say 23-year-old Travis James Eckstein, a U.S. citizen, was shot and killed during a shootout with CBP officers Monday at the San Ysidro Port of Entry. Eckstein was driving from Mexico into the U.S. and refused to stop for officers. Officers say Eckstein tried to drive through an inspection area, before a vehicle blocked his exit.He then began to fire on officers before he exited his vehicle continued shooting. Seconds after two separate shootouts, our viewer saw agents dragging Eckstein onto the sidewalk. Meanwhile, other officers were pointing their guns at the bullet-ridden truck, addressing the passengers.
