SAN FRANCISCO, July 6 (Xinhua) -- Facebook on Wednesday introduced a new video calling feature powered by Skype and some improvements to the chat designs on the social networking site.According to Facebook, users can reach video calling from a new "Call" button on a friend's profile or from the chat panel after downloading a Skype application. A recipient will receive an alert that they are being called and can then accept or decline.At the press event held at Facebook headquarters in Palo Alto, California, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the feature will begin with one-on-one video chat. Skype CEO Tony Bates, whose company has been acquired by Microsoft, said Skype is considering having its paid product within the Facebook product.The social networking company also introduced "Ad Hoc Group Chat", which enables users to start a group chat instantly without creating a group with those multiple friends at first. The new group chat feature is also available for Facebook's mobile interfaces.Facebook also introduces a sidebar that lists the people a user messages most, enabling users to chat with close friends, professional contacts or co-workers without being interrupted. The sidebar can adjust with the size of users' browser window and automatically appears when the window is wide enough.In the opening remarks at the press event, Zuckerberg confirmed that Facebook had surpassed 750 million monthly active users. He said the company had declined to announce the number earlier because it has become focused on other metrics, like how actively users are sharing information.The CEO said users are now sharing 4 billion "things" on Facebook every day, which grew at an exponential rate compared to the amount users share a year ago."Social networking is at an inflection point," said Zuckerberg, adding that he believes social networking now is more about the strength of connecting people rather than the quantity of users or ubiquity of the technology.Zuckerberg presented a graph to show how Facebook product launches have helped drive the growth of sharing. BRUSSELS, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Baby bottles containing the substance Bisphenol A (BPA) would have to be pulled from the shelves across the European Union (EU) starting from Wednesday, in a "milestone" move to better protect the health of EU citizens, an official said Tuesday."Due to the fact that there are uncertainties concerning the effect of the exposure of infants to Bisphenol A, the commission deemed it both necessary and appropriate to take action," said John Dalli, EU Health and Consumer Policy Commissioner."The aim is to further reduce the exposure of the most vulnerable part of our population, i.e. infants," he said.The ban, adopted in an EU directive in late January, would prohibit baby bottles containing BPA from placing on the EU market and import into the 27-member EU from June 1.Previously, the bloc had already banned the manufacture of the controversial baby bottles on March 1, and the industry has been withdrawing such products voluntarily.BPA is an organic molecule that is used in the manufacture of polycarbonate plastics, which are used to manufacture plastic materials, such as baby bottles.Traces of BPA can be released from plastic containers into the food they carry if these containers are heated at high temperatures. They may lead to early sexual development of children and could cause cancer, according to health officials.China would also prohibit the manufacture of feeding bottles containing BPA from June 1, while imports and sales of bottles containing BPA would be banned starting from Sept. 1.

CANBERRA, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- A team of Australian and U.S. scientists on Wednesday said they discovered a genetic defect, which can lead to Leigh syndrome, a rare disorder which affects the central nervous syndrome.The scientists tested more than 1000 genes by encoding proteins active in two individuals who suffer from the illness. They used a new technique known as next-generation DNA sequencing to examine the genes.The gene they discovered encodes an enzyme which is found in the mitochondria which are subsets of cells. Without this enzyme the mitochondria do not translate proteins efficiently, and this then causes Leigh syndrome.According to David Thorburn, from the Murdoch Children's Research Institute in Melbourne, the discovery shows the enormous potential of the new technology."These findings demonstrate the ability of sequencing technologies to improve diagnosis," Professor Thorburn said in a statement released on Wednesday."Although it isn't clear in the case of Leigh syndrome whether the precise molecular diagnosis will necessarily lead to therapies, the current findings represent a meaningful service."He added that diagnosis of the disease along with its specific genetic cause can also be informative about the risk a couple has of having another affected child. The diagnostic information can help in decisions about whether and how to pursue alternative means of having children, for instance through the use of donor sperm or eggs.The research team consisted of scientists from Australia's Murdoch Institute as well as the Broad Institute in the U.S.In Leigh syndrome, infants are born apparently healthy only to develop movement and breathing disorders that worsen over time, often leading to death by the age of three. The problem is that the mitochondria responsible for powering their cells cannot keep up with the demand for energy in their developing brains.
