(KGTV) — The holidays can be particularly difficult for service members overseas who are missing out on spending time with their family and friends during season. That's why every year, thousands of residents across the country try to spread some cheer with care packages to troops as a way to connect, build morale, and share in the joy that comes with the holidays.Even if it's a card, holiday gestures help spread the warmth of the season.DeadlinesThe U.S. Postal Service says cards and packages should be sent to APO/FPO/DPO addresses overseas. Those should be sent no later Dec. 11 (for cards, letters and priority mail packages) and Dec. 18 (for priority mail express military service, available to most destinations.)USPS has also created military care kits, including several free postal items, to help send packages overseas. Shipping guidelines can be found here. How to helpFor those unsure of how to help, there are a few options. One method is through the USO. The organization sends a variety of holiday care packages that can support up to 50 troops a piece depending on the option chosen. A link to their offerings, including phone calls home, comfort food packages, and more can be found here.Through Dec. 31, Johnson & Johnson will also match donations to the USO up to a total of 0,000.Other organizations facilitating care packages for troops include Operation Support Our Troops and Soldiers' Angels. Military.com has a fully vetted list of organziations here.If you are sending your own package, it's recommended to stick to items that will last in the mail: Toiletries for men and women, non-perishable foods and snack (though be care with items that could get messy during the journey.) Do not send alcohol or drugs. 1752

A 3-year-old suffered second-degree burns after falling into a small thermal feature at Yellowstone National Park. The National Park Service (NPS) says the child took off running from a trail before slipping and falling into the feature Friday morning. It happened near the Midway Geyser Basin. The child, who suffered burns to the lower body and back, was airlifted to the Burn Center at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.According to NPS, the ground in hydrothermal areas, like at Yellowstone, is fragile and thin. Just below the surface is scalding water.Visitors to Yellowstone are asked to always remain on boardwalks and trails. They’re also encouraged to exercise extreme caution around thermal features. This certainly isn’t the first time someone has been injured in a thermal area like this. This past May, NPS says another visitor, who illegally entered the park, fell into thermal feature at Old Faithful while taking photos.Similar instances have been reported in previous years as well. In 2016 and 2000, people actually died as a result of falling into hot springs, NPS says. 1099

A 5th grade teacher may have been forced out because she wears a hijab. That’s the allegation against Melvindale/Northern Allen Park School District in a lawsuit filed this past week. The lawyer for Amirah Mosed said the way she was treated at work at Allendale Elementary School isn't right and in the lawsuit they allege Mosed was subjected to a hostile environment where she was told to “get a job in Dearborn” among other things, harassment that they say is against the law. “This is a woman who’s born in the U.S, who is very American and a wonderful teacher and just a great person with a sense of humor, a delightful human being,” attorney David Nacht said.Nacht said his client endured religious discrimination while she taught 5th grade. In the lawsuit against the district there are allegations Mosed was told by supervisors to resign or get fired, to “get a job in Dearborn,” told her students were not safe with her, all because she is of Yemini descent and dresses, culturally, in a hijab.”It got worse and the students loved her and she was written up and fired and it’s bologna. and its not America,” Nacht said. The allegations are discrimination and harassment on the basis of her religion. Nacht said there were no legitimate concerns about her teaching abilities.“She was just not perceived to fit the community to fit the school,” Nacht said. “What this case is really about making America safe in the workplace, for all Americans. All of us who might not fit the norm of what some boss, some principal, some local manager or vice president thinks the norm is.”Mosed was fired back in May of last year.Scripps station WXYZ in Detroit briefly reached the superintendent by phone Monday evening.Dr. Kimberly Sorranno said “no comment” before hanging up. 1845

(KGTV) -- Olive Garden's unlimited "Pasta Pass" promotion, which allows passholders eight weeks of unlimited pasta bowls, sold out in a slurp. It took only seconds to sell out of the restaurant's 22,000 passes priced at 0 each. The restaurant also offered its "Pasta Passport to Italy," which includes an all-expenses paid trip for two to Italy. The 50 available "passports" were sold for 0 each, and include unlimited pasta and the vacation. The passes went on sale Thursday at 11 a.m. Pacific Time."Sorry! All Pasta Passports to Italy were claimed instantly and are sold out," a message on the site said only minutes after the offer went live.According to the fine print for the "Pasta Passport," the 8-day, 7-night Italy vacation will take place on April 7, 2018. Roundtrip airfare, hotel, optional excursions and food are included. The unlimited pasta pass is good for free pasta between Sept. 25, 2017 and Nov. 19, 2017.Last year, the 21,000 passes that were up for grabs sold out in a second. But is the unlimited pasta for eight weeks a good deal?A quick internet search of prices for a box of pasta and a jar of spaghetti sauce shows that a single person can enjoy five servings of pasta for about -- that's breakfast, lunch and dinner for three bucks!Spread that out over 56 consecutive days, and that person will have paid 8.Maybe it's a good deal -- the restaurant offers a bigger variety, probably more ambiance and flair, and you don't have to do the dishes afterwards. Perhaps the bigger question is: do you really want to eat that much pasta ... alone ...  just before the holidays?  1658

A 19-year-old man was detained in Germany on Tuesday after police found him carrying a 2-foot long python in his pants.According to the Associated Press, the unidentified man was detained by police in Darmstadt after having a loud drunken argument with another man. When police searched the teenager, they found "a significant bulge" in his pants. The man then told police he had a snake in his pants and pulled it out to show officers. According to the BBC, police believe the baby king python may belong to one of the man's relatives. The teen was taken into a jail cell to sleep if off.
