SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego doctor is leading a new national study that tests drugs designed to help coronavirus patients. If you tested positive for coronavirus this summer, there was nowhere for you to go unless you were sick enough to end up in a hospital bed. The ACTIV-2 Study hopes to keep that from happening."So this trial is specifically designed to find those agents to keep people from going to the hospital," Dr. Davey Smith said. He is the Chief of Infectious Diseases at UC San Diego and the Protocol Chair for the study."If your symptoms started within ten days and your test is positive in seven days, then you are eligible for the study," Dr. Smith said.UCSD had their first patient mid-September. There are two test sites, one at UCSD and another at Kaiser's Zion Medical Center. Dr. Smith hopes to expand to six test sites."We want to test eight drugs over the next year, maybe more. There are lots of pharmaceutical companies making better and better drugs," he said the goal is to keep people healthy."If I were to get sick and I would have something to prevent me from getting sicker that's number 1. Then the next good thing is maybe instead of having an infusion we'll have a pill or we'll have an inhaler."He said they need 2,000 participants to test each drug and will use a placebo to measure it's effectiveness.A national study, led by San Diego."Hopefully we can do our home city proud," Dr. Smith said. 1442

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local couple is making a plea for the return of some family heirlooms after a burglary at their home while it was being fumigated. The mess Denise Duffy walked into is now stamped in her mind and heart."Very upsetting. I just felt very sick," said Duffy.Just off 54th street in Oak Park, after several days of termite treatment, Duffy and her husband met the fumigation crew Wednesday morning so they could get back in their home. Turns out, somebody else had been inside. The tent was sliced open, along with a screen window on the side of the house. The thief ransacked the entire house, stealing electronics and dozens of pieces of jewelry, most of them family heirlooms."My parents are dead. My grandparents are dead, and I had a piece of them," said Duffy.Among the pieces that priceless heirlooms was a gold necklace she wore at her wedding nearly 40 years ago, given to her by her grandfather. Also gone was her husband's gold wedding band."It's pretty tough on you ... brings back memories. Stuff you hope to have for your kids," he said. The Duffys aren't alone. Last week in El Cajon, there was a burglary with a similar M.O. A home - two days into a fumigation - was broken into after the tent was sliced open overnight. In that case, a senior couple lost jewelry, coins and other valuables collected during their lifetimes. The pain of their loss is shared by the Duffys. "Just a violation ... Can't replace any of it," said Denise. Her husband's wedding band engraved with their wedding date '11-28-80' and 'Love Never Fails.'It's unknown right now if there's a link between the two crimes. 1629

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man accused of causing a flood which some tenants confused for a terrorist attack faced a judge Wednesday to enter his not guilty plea.A Deputy District Attorney argued that Francisco Morales is a danger to the community."He poses a great threat to the community as there are over 200 individuals, citizens in the community of Little Italy who cannot go home; they have essentially lost everything," she said. The judge agreed, and raised Morales' bail from 0,000 to ,000,000. Morales faces 45 counts of felony vandalism and 5 counts of assault intended to cause great bodily injury.Several residents were forced to flee from their Little Italy apartment complex Monday morning after police said Morales opened pipes and used a fire hose to flood all eight floors of the building.Water from the hose and pipes made its way down to all floors, including the basement, according to authorities. Multiple witnesses said some residents were waist- or shoulder-deep in water as they tried to leave."It was like a waterfall coming down on you of water," tenant Ryan Lange said. "When I came down to the bottom floor there were people crying, we're trapped, we're trapped we can't get out!"Some residents said Morales sprayed them with fire hoses as they evacuated the building.Officers located Morales in the lobby and arrested him on suspicion of vandalism."It seemed like somebody was trying to kill everybody in there," Lange said the pain hasn't lessened over the past two days. "I feel like it's unlive-able; it smells like musty and moldy, looks like they're going to have to redo all the carpets and the drywall."Lange lives in one of the 45 units destroyed by the flood. He said he estimates his losses around ,000, not including his car.10News learned more than 200 people and their pets were displaced from the 100-unit complex. The building was being evaluated for any potential structure damage. The Deputy DA said the building could be condemned. 1988
