BEIJING, July 6 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Civil Affairs on Tuesday jointly sent 377 million yuan (55.2 million U.S. dollars) to four southern provinces which had been battered by rainstorms and consequent floods.The funds will be mainly used for the evacuation and resettlement of affected local people and the rebuilding of damaged houses in the provinces of Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangxi and Hunan, said a statement released Tuesday by the Ministry of Civil Affairs.Figures from the ministry show that around 260 people have been killed and 211 left missing in 11 provinces since rainstorms hit south China on June 13.More than 3.8 million people were evacuated and relocated due to floodwater, which also destroyed 312,000 homes and resulted in direct economic losses reaching 64.57 billion yuan (about 9.49 billion U.S. dollars).As of Tuesday, the two ministries have allocated a total of 867 million yuan for eight southern provinces and autonomous regions for flood relief.

BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhua) -- The gross domestic product (GDP) in China's western regions grew by 13.5 percent year on year in 2009, much higher than the country's revised national GDP growth of 9.1 percent, according to a report issued here on Saturday.It is the eighth year in a row for these regions to score a double-digit GDP growth after the Chinese government launched a "West Development" campaign ten years ago, read the report on the economic development of China's western regions issued by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.It attributed the GDP growth mainly to China's policies to stimulate domestic demand and the increase in investment, despite the global financial crisis.Five provinces, regions or municipalities saw an increase of more then ten percent in the disposable income of urban citizens in 2009, as the income gap between China's western and eastern regions had begun to narrow, the report said.The average yearly per capita disposable income of urban citizens in the western regions was 12,971 yuan (about 1,918 U.S. dollars) in 2008.Noting that economic development in the western regions still heavily relied on natural resources, the report said efforts should be made to increase the regions' capacity to ensure sustainable development, while establishing a low-carbon industrial system.

BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhuanet) -- Flooding and landslides triggered by recent heavy rain have killed at least 42 people as of Wednesday in the worst hit provinces like Guangxi, Fujian and Sichuan, while 49 others are still missing.Storms are forecast to continue to sweep across most parts of South China over the next 10 days, with some areas due to receive 250mm of rain, the China Meteorological Administration said on Wednesday.The national weather forecaster said rainstorms will also hit Guizhou, Sichuan, Fujian and Guangdong the following week.The National Meteorological Center issued a yellow alert on Wednesday morning for heavy rain across parts of China. Residents wade through the waterlogged street in Nanning, southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, on June 15.
