PORTLAND, Ore. — A peaceful protest morphed into an intense early morning confrontation between demonstrators and law enforcement in Oregon's largest city.U.S. agents fired what appeared to be tear gas, flash bangs and pepper balls early Monday to clear a mass of protesters outside the federal courthouse in Portland.Some protesters had climbed over the fence surrounding the courthouse. Others shot fireworks, banged on the fence and projected lights on the building.The city has seen nightly protests for about 60 straight days since the death of George Floyd.The Monday morning scene in Portland has become the norm in the city in recent days. Authorities declared a riot in the are of the courthouse on early Sunday morning as some protests breached a gate surrounding the building. The Associated Press reported that six people were arrested.Later on Sunday, Portland police say a person was shot at a park near where the protests take place. Two people were taken into custody in connection with the incident but later released. The person who was shot was later treated at a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.Portland police also reported Sunday that a bag was found at the same park that contained loaded rifle magazines and Molotov cocktails. It's unclear if the items were related to the protests, and police say the items are not connected with Sunday's shootings.Though protests have continued for weeks in Portland, they've escalated in the past week since the arrival of federal agents. The agents were sent to Portland as part of a directive from President Donald Trump and Acting Sec. of Homeland Security Chad Wolf to prevent the defacement of monuments, statues and federal property.However, both Oregon Gov. Kate Brown and Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler have said they do not welcome the presence of the agents and have asked the Trump administration to order their removal. President Donald Trump briefly appeared before reporters Thursday to tout June's job report as coronavirus cases continue to spike across the country.Trump said the report — which was released about an hour before the briefing — showed an increase in consumer confidence. (KGTV) - Family and friends are preparing to say goodbye to a Poway teen, killed while driving home from college for Christmas break."She always brings a positive vibe wherever she goes. Her smile can really brighten up the room," said friend Brandon Kim.For the friends of Kim Huynh, smiles for them are hard to muster."To me it was just shock," said Kim.Last Thursday night, the 18-year-old Huynh was driving back home to Poway with her older sister after finishing her first quarter at UC Riverside, when the car spun out on a Murietta highway, slamming into a tree and killing her. Her sister suffered minor injuries. The cause of the crash remains under investigation."She was one of my closest friends," said Kim. Kim met Huynh in grade school."Super smart. Ten times smarter than me," said Kim.Kim said his friend also had a joyful side and loved having fun. Huynh danced for one of Rancho Bernardo High's dance teams. After graduating, she enrolled at UC Riverside on scholarship. The pre-med student also hoped to help her immigrant parents."She said she wanted to become a doctor to give back to them for taking such good care of her," said Kim.After her death, friends gathered this weekend to remember a promising life cut short."Everybody broke down ... I want to grow up with everyone. The fact I have to leave someone behind breaks my heart," said Kim.The funeral is planned for Thursday. (KGTV) -- A cluster of ten church-run thrift shops at a Poway shopping center, described as a “Disneyland” for discount hunters, will begin to close early next year.In preparation for redevelopment, the owners of the Carriage Center West Shopping Center near Poway and Carriage roads have informed all the tenants that their leases will expire in 2020.While some of the stores will move to new locations, at least four of the church-run thrifts are in danger of closing permanently.“It would take a miracle to find a place that we could afford to move to,” said Marcia Harrod, who has volunteered for 19 years at St. Bartholomew's Thrift Shop.St. Bart’s has operated a thrift shop for 53 years.Sumner Rollings, the president of the thrift shop, said a committee of volunteers spent 18 months searching for a new location, without luck.“The biggest factor has been the cost per square foot of space,” he said.The shop’s lease will expire in February.Built in 1974, the Carriage Center is considered a “mecca” for thrift store fans because it offers 10 stores within walking distance, along with restaurants and other service businesses.“It’s really sad,” said one customer named Tina who said she shops at the Carriage Center weekly. “I’m retired and this is my Disneyland.”St. Michael’s Thrift Shop is also in danger of closing permanently.“We don’t charge Nordstrom prices so we can’t pay Nordstrom rent either,” said volunteer Ken Baumann.Sales at St. Michael’s keep 1,000 kids in Haiti clothed, he said.St. Bart’s raised ,000 for church services last year, said Rollings.“It’s been an incredible run as far as supporting the outreach of the church, and all good things come to an end,” Rollings said. “Something else will take its place.” 1766
