SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As San Diego’s Pride celebration approaches, a new homeless shelter has opened specifically focusing on members of the LGBTQ community.It’s operated by the Interfaith Shelter Network, which just opened a new branch in Hillcrest after receiving grants from the Pride Foundation and the Cushman Foundation.Abigail Shrestha, the manager of the rotational shelter programs at Interfaith, said they opened the new shelter because they recognized the need.“It’s a population that has quite a bit of discrimination and other issues, so it’s beneficial to have something that supports the community,” said Shrestha.The operation is based out of Hillcrest, but the shelter location will rotate between churches in Interfaith’s network. As of Monday, one week after they opened, they had six clients, though it can hold up to 12 people. Shrestha said she expects it to be full by the end of the week.Interfaith operates shelters around the county which are all LGBTQ friendly, but this is the first one that is targeted for that community. Mainly, said Shrestha, because of the unique circumstances of their housing instability.“Many of the clients, especially the youth, are forced out of their homes. Some families will not recognize positively their choices, and they are kicked out,” she said.Their main goal is to get the residents into permanent housing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California Highway Patrol has identified the man who died after slamming into a tree on the Sea World Drive on-ramp Saturday. CHP says 26-year-old Jacob Eugene Arnell was killed when the Cadillac Escalade he was driving at a high rate of speed overturned and hit a tree. The crash happened around 9 a.m. Saturday on the right shoulder of Sea World Drive. Arnell was pronounced dead at the scene. At this time, it’s unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved. The medical examiner’s toxicology report in pending, CHP says. Arnell was the only one inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. 618

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As people continue to try to purchase essential items, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office says it's protecting consumers by going after retailers who are illegally price gouging."We have received well over 100 calls to our tip line," said Damon Mosler, the Chief of the Econcomic Crimes Division at the DA's Office.It's illegal for businesses to overcharge more than 10 percent for essential items during a state of emergency.RELATED: Unemployment benefits could take weeks amid coronavirus pandemicMosler said there are currently 70 reports under investigation."We are going to the store to verify the price and the item and we are serving them with a warning letter explaining what the law is, explaining what the violation is," he explained.After that the crews, who are undercover, will return to the reported store to do compliance checks and make sure the retailers are responsive to the warnings.RELATED: City Council puts stop on evictions during coronavirus pandemicAbout a dozen business owners have been warned in the county so far. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- COVID-19 outreach in the Latino community is getting a boost after San Diego County partnered with promotoras to help with contact tracing. Promotoras, which literally means promoters, are bilingual community health workers. The goal is to lower the high number of COVID-19 cases among Latinos in the county. Latinos and Hispanics make up almost 63% of COVID-19 cases in the county, but Latinos make up only 34% of the population.The promotoras are members of the communities where they will be working. The county announced the partnership at the beginning of August and now the promotoras are out in the community helping with contact tracing. The promotoras will work in underserved communities and Latino neighborhoods. ABC 10News spoke to two promotoras working with South Bay Community Services. They are getting ready to start on September 1st. In total, 17 promotoras with the organization will start on that day. They've all received hours of training and are certified contact tracers. The promotoras will have the task of reaching out to the close contacts of positive COVID-19 cases. The contact is made over the phone or via email and text and the promotoras will ask things about testing and if they're presenting any symptoms. The county's partnership also includes promotoras from San Diego State and will include promotoras that speak other languages like Tagalog and Arabic. 1421

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — City Councilman Scott Sherman's newly announced candidacy will alter the race to become San Diego's next mayor.Sherman, termed out from City Council, is the first household Republican to run to lead America's eighth largest city. Sherman announced he would run just before the Dec. 6 deadline to file for the March 2020 primary. Current Mayor Kevin Faulconer, a Republican, is termed out. In an interview, Sherman said he did not want the mayoral debates to be dominated by two big-name Democrats: State Assemblyman Todd Gloria and City Council President Pro-Tem Barbara Bry. "Listening to the two major candidates there, I'm going, 'Well, things that I care about aren't being discussed so let's see what I can do,'" he said. "There's a very good chance that he will get in the runoff."The top two vote-getters, regardless of party affiliation, will move on to the November primary. In September, a 10News-Union-Tribune scientific poll showed Gloria leading Bry by a two-to-one margin, with 31 percent of voters supporting Gloria, and 15 percent supporting Bry.
