As the pandemic continues, homeless shelters are having to change their approach to meet the needs of families.At least one network of shelters is doing that by trying to prevent homelessness.Family Promise is the largest homeless shelter in the country. Last year, it helped 93,000 people.It provides aid to those who need housing by placing them with community partners within the interfaith community.The executive director in Arizona says the problem right now is these communities are shutting down in the pandemic.“The congregations in the last six months, five and half months, have gotten used to not hosting,” said Ted Taylor, Executive Director of Family Promise Arizona. “We have to get them back into the hosting mode because it is what makes our model work. So, the fear that is at congregations still remains. It is real and it is a very difficult start.”Family Promise says the average cost to rescue a family is ,000 and it takes as long as four months. For Family Promise, it costs ,000 and takes 43 days.While their new effort to prevent homelessness gets up and running, Family Promise says looming evictions require more community support than ever.So far, Family Promise has prevented 10 families from homelessness in Arizona. At Uptown Wines, Beer & Spirits, sales have surged since the COVID-19 crisis started and are expected to rise even more during the holidays.“Last time I’ve seen sales like this, it would be considered New Year’s, Thanksgiving and Halloween night,” said beer specialist Wiley Deerman.Deerman says with more people quarantined at home many started stocking up on alcohol to-go.“We’ve seen a lot of these half-sized bottles, the sales have increased on those,” he said.Now, new research from Vanderbilt University shows not only are more people drinking alcohol and abusing other drugs during the pandemic, but that this increase could create new addicts as well.“You’re seeing an increase in drinking, in drug use in people at home. BALTIMORE — Americans stepped up their home purchases in June by a robust 20.7% after the pandemic had caused sales to crater in the prior three months. But the housing market could struggle to rebound further in the face of the resurgent viral outbreak and a shrinking supply of homes for sale. Sales of existing homes rose last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.72 million, the National Association of Realtors said. Their data showed all four regions of the country saw growth, with the west experiencing a larger increase. The data included single-family homes, townhomes, condominiums and co-ops. Despite the sharp monthly gain, purchases are still down 11.3% from a year ago, when homes had sold at an annual pace of 5.32 million.Inventory remains an issues, according to the National Association of Realtors (NAR). AVILA BEACH, Calif. — Officials say two women are lucky to be alive after a humpback whale capsized their kayak as they paddled in the ocean on Monday.The incident, which occurred near the Cal Poly Pier, was caught on video by multiple people in the area.Julie McSorley says she went out Sunday and took pictures of the whales and convinced her friend to go kayaking with her on Monday.McSorley says there were a lot of birds and fish in the area, so people had their phones at the ready. She said she and her friend could see whales off in the distance.Seconds later, one of the whales was right underneath them.While some video footage makes it appear as the women went inside the whale's mouth, McSorley says their kayak just overturned, and they were thrown underwater.Video shows McSorley screamed before going underwater for about five or six seconds.Humpback whales are considered an endangered species, and marine mammal experts say they can be unpredictable and dangerous. Experts say people should keep about a football field's worth of space between themselves and the large mammals, when possible.The Port San Luis Harbor Patrol says enforcement can be difficult. Boaters can think they've left a whale plenty of space, but the mammals move quickly.The whales have been making appearances close to shore between Morro Bay and Avila Beach in recent days.
