(KGTV0 - An East County mom panicked about the challenges of distance is calling upon her neighbors for answers.The Ascher family moved from Connecticut to El Cajon nearly two weeks ago. Along with the stresses of the move, there is the reality of distance learning, which proved challenging for Megan Ascher and her kids back in march. Her kids are entering kindergarten, and 2nd and 6th grades. Both Ascher and her husband work full time."Feeling overwhelmed and completely lost on how to begin or end this journey," said Ascher.She was lost, but she found her answer online. After Ascher saw a similar group in San Diego, she created an El Cajon Facebook group called 'Neighbors Helping Parents.'"The concept is to get neighbors, parents, and families working together and supporting each other," said Ascher.That support will run the gamut, from neighbors sponsoring a child's school supplies, printing out homework or picking up a lunch at the school if the parents are tied up."It does take a village, especially during a pandemic," said Ascher.Ascher's 'village' includes neighbors with and without school-age children, including some retired teachers ready to step up. Special education teachers have volunteered their time."I have neighbors willing to help with distance learning, tutoring online and going into the homes of families," said Ascher.Ashcer says the group will also help organize learning pods. Just two days after starting the group, some 120 people have joined."It says there is this big sense of community, and it's really good to see that," said Ascher.Ascher is just beginning to work out how this will be coordinated, but she says the panic is gone, as she leans on her neighbors."In the end, by banning together, I hope we can help our kids thrive and succeed," said Ascher. 1830

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - El Cajon has the highest concentration of homeless among East County communities, according to the latest homeless count. The count found 298 are people living without shelter in El Cajon and another 498 that live sheltered. One of the organizations devoted to helping the homeless in the community is the Crisis House, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. They satisfy immediate needs with food, diapers, and clothing. They've also helped many get permanent housing. However, there is still a major gap in services in getting people from the streets to permanent housing. COMPLETE COVERAGE: Life in El Cajon"I think for this community to start with a bridge shelter might be very helpful," said Executive Director Mary Case. The concept behind a bridge shelter is a place where their clients can stay while the organization helps them the right help they need or while they want for permanent housing. Case says there isn't a place like that for their clients. She says there are times "where I've arranged for a service provider to come and meet somebody here and they're not here, and it's like gee, they're here most days," she said. At that point they have to reschedule the meeting with the provider. It's tough to track down or get a hold of clients when they are living in the street. City Manager Graham Mitchell points out there are many religious organizations in the community that also work with the homeless. He also says getting all the homeless in a central location raises some concerns. "I know what you're saying; there's some value in having everyone under one roof where everyone is there," he told 10News. "In a small community that would place a burden on one entire neighborhood. So I'm actually going to be recommending we find partners throughout the community." (KGTV) - A day after a massive fire broke out in an East County recycling plant, smoke was seen billowing from a building just a freeway exit away Thursday.San Diego firefighters responded to the site at about 12:30 p.m. Smoke could be seen pouring from a building in the 100 block of Fletcher Parkway in El Cajon. The site is that of the city's former police station, that has since sat abandoned.It's not clear if there were active flames inside the building, but footage from Sky10 showed thick smoke coming from the building.San Diego Police officers were also seen nearby with three individuals sitting on the ground. Police have not confirmed if anyone was in custody or being questioned.The site was approved for redevelopment last year, with plans to build a hotel and retail stores on the site.Wednesday, a metal recycling facility burst into flames, sending black smoke into the air. During a time where a large number of Florida residents are without power in the wake of Hurricane Irma, two Florida men were caught attempting to steal a ,500 utility pole.42-year-old Blake Lee Waller and 46-year-old Victor Walter Apeler were arrested on grand theft charges Wednesday after someone reported seeing them load the pole onto the top of their car, according to the Jacksonville sheriff’s office.A police report says that the two were spotted driving with the pole on top of their vehicle, they were then stopped by officials and arrested.The report says that one of the men told officials that he had to move the pole because it was on the ground so close to traffic lanes, according to the Associated Press.The sheriff's office tweeted a picture of the shirtless men sitting handcuffed on the sidewalk next to the car carrying the utility pole.  895
