OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - It’s a sight for sore eyes in Oceanside: millions of pounds of badly-needed sand are being dumped on the beaches.Captain David “Skully” Mora runs Sailing Blue Water Charters and relies on the harbor mouth being accessible. He welcomes the dredging."Absolutely excited! Because it just makes it so much safer, we had three boats roll this year,” Mora said. "I like it being at least 20-25 feet, usually where it is, but it's been as shallow as 8-10 on this side of the harbor."PHOTOS: Dredging project underway in Oceanside HarborThe annual spring dredging was canceled. Typically, the work is funded by the Army Corps of Engineers, but they were not able to get the proper permit in time. All summer long, sand built up in Oceanside Harbor, creating dangerous conditions.RELATED: Businesses hurting after spring dredging canceledMora is among those who canceled trips, losing thousands of dollars."I canceled many every week, it was unsafe to go out,” said Mora. The dredging will last two to three weeks and cost the Army Corps of Engineers .5 million.RELATED: Frustration after Army engineers cancel spring dredging 1153

On Sunday, tension escalated at the US-Mexico border as U.S. officials launched tear gas at a group of migrants rushing the border. Now, thousands of migrants are staying in temporary shelters across the border in Tijuana and Mexicali, hoping to claim asylum in America. For Edwin Hernandez, Carmen Lopez and their two children, it was an unimaginable journey to get to the border.“For us, it's hard,” Hernandez says. “We never thought we'd do this.”The family traveled 2,500 miles by foot from their home in Honduras to the border town of Tijuana.  The family formed a human chain, locking arms, and began their long trek, all in hopes of seeking asylum in the United States. Hernandez says they needed to leave due to escalating problems in their home country.“Problems involving gangs and extortion,” Hernandez explains.Hernandez says he’s already seen two of his own cousins murdered by gangs, and he worries for his two children, ages 7 and 12.“The problem is, I’m just always thinking of the kids,” Hernandez says. “I think to myself, what's the point of doing this? I'm doing this for my two children and for her.”The family wasn’t at the border when tear gas was deployed on migrants trying to cross illegally on Sunday, but they saw the images.“I would not want that to happen to my kids, or to me or to my husband. So, I would rather wait,” says Lopez. They want to make sure they enter legally by asking for asylum at an official checkpoint.Right now, the closest thing they have to an official document is a piece of paper they received from a checkpoint with their places in line. They are numbers 1,463 and 1,464.“Of course we’re scared, but what can we do?”  Hernandez says. For now, they family will wait at a shelter, where their children can go to a small school.“It really depends on them and how long they have us wait,” says Lopez. “I don't know.”  1889

Ohio State's board of trustees is debating the fate of football coach Urban Meyer, who could face disciplinary action over his handling of domestic violence allegations against one of his former assistants. The board of trustees held a meeting private Wednesday to discuss a possible punishment against Meyer.Meyer has been accused of turning a blind eye to alleged domestic violence committed by Zach Smith, his wide receivers coach at both Ohio State and Florida. Smith was fired by Ohio State in late July when his ex-wife filed a domestic violence civil protection order.A day after Smith's firing, Meyer told reporters at Big Ten Media Days in Chicago that he was not aware of any allegations against Smith. Reports later indicate that Meyer's wife and wives of other coaches were aware of the allegations against Smith.Meyer then acknowledged in a statement that he misled reporters about his knowledge of Smith's allegations.  950

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A man was taken into custody in Oceanside on Monday morning after police say he broke into a short-term rental and sexually assaulted a woman. The sexual assault happened around 4 a.m. on the 800 block of South Pacific Street. According to police, Kwahmell Archer entered the home through an unlocked front door. Oceanside Police said there were 20 people inside the three-story rental when the suspect walked into a closet, got undressed and entered a sleeping woman’s bedroom. The 49-year-old woman woke up and screamed when the man grabbed her, waking up the rest of the house. Police said the suspect then ran back into the closet and was pinned inside by other people inside the house. Police arrived and took the man into custody. 773
