A woman who was 16 when she killed a Nashville man who solicited her for sex must serve at least 51 years in prison before she's eligible for release, according to the Tennessee Supreme Court. On Thursday the court said defendants like Cyntoia Brown, who are convicted of first-degree murder committed after July 1, 1995, and sentenced to life imprisonment, can't become eligible for release from prison before serving more than five decades. The court's five justices were unanimous in their decision against Brown, who was convicted of killing a 43-year-old man in 2004 when he took her to his house for sex. Brown has said she killed him after she feared he would kill her.Thursday's ruling came in response to a lawsuit in which Brown argues her sentence is unconstitutional, citing a 2012 opinion by the US Supreme Court that said mandatory life sentences without parole for juvenile offenders violate the US Constitution. The Tennessee Supreme Court explained in a statement that "under state law, a life sentence is a determinate sentence of 60 years. However, the sixty-year sentence can be reduced by up to 15 percent, or 9 years, by earning various sentence credits."According to the Tennessee code, those credits include recognition for good behavior or participation in educational or vocational training programsA district court previously denied Brown's motion, per court documents, pointing out she hadn't been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole -- just a life sentence. The case is pending judgment by the US Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, which asked the Tennessee Supreme Court to share its opinion. 1649

After a difficult, monthlong journey from Central America to the US-Mexico border, dozens of asylum-seeking migrants are vowing to remain outside an immigration processing center until "every last one" is admitted into the country, an organizer with the caravan said late Sunday.Earlier, the migrants marched from Friendship Park in Tijuana, Mexico to the San Ysidro port of entry. They stood on the Mexican side; on the other side lay San Diego, California. It was the final leg for some in the caravan of hundreds of migrants, which had reached Tijuana on Tuesday.Alex Mensing, an organizer with Pueblo Sin Fronteras, which assembled the caravan, said 50 migrants were admitted to the immigration processing center on the Mexico side. However, that is incorrect. The migrants congregated on a bridge leading to the US border while waiting to be processed by American officials. Before the group arrived, US Customs and Border Protection officials said the port had already reached full capacity, and migrants trying to get into the United States may need to wait in Mexico as officials process those already in the facility. Some migrants said they had walked the last leg of the journey filled with anxiety. Others scarfed down food before they filed into the center, afraid there would be no food once they turned themselves in to border officials. One woman in a wheelchair said she was leaving a part of herself in Mexico. She didn't know where she was going, just that she was going to the United States, she said.In anticipation of the final march of a trip that has riled President Donald Trump, supporters lined both sides of the border on Sunday. The migrants say they want a better life for themselves and their children, safe from violence and poverty in their home countries. The caravan is both a humanitarian and an activist mission, as organizers created the event to draw greater attention to the migrants' plight. One such migrant is Gabriela Hernandez, a pregnant mother of two who fled Honduras and crossed Guatemala into Mexico to join the group heading north. She and her two sons left behind their friends and family and battled hunger and exhaustion along the monthlong journey."There are people who think I just woke up and said, 'Oh, I want to just go to the United States.' It's not that easy," she said.Isabel Rodriguez, 52, traveled with her two grandchildren, Anderson, 7, and Cristofer, 11, from El Salvador with the caravan over several weeks. She said she was grateful to be in Tijuana but was worried about what's ahead."I hear they are separating people who are not parents of children," she said, "but I am ready to get to the border."  2681

A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against the NBA in the death of Zeke Upshaw, who collapsed and died suddenly during the final minutes of a March 24 game.Attorneys Ben Crump and Bob Hillard filed the lawsuit on behalf of Upshaw's mother, Jewel at the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York on Wednesday. The lawsuit stems from a March 24 game where Upshaw, who played for the Detroit Pistons' developmental league affiliate Grand Rapids Drive, collapsed and entered full cardiac arrest. According to the lawsuit, for over five minutes, no life-saving measure was taken to address Upshaw's condition. Upshaw, who was 26 years old at the time, was then kept on life support for two days and then died. "When the otherwise healthy heart of a professional NBA athlete suddenly stops during a game there is absolutely no reason, in 2018, that his heart cannot be immediately restarted," Hillard said. "No attempts were made to save Zeke Upshaw's life. No CPR, no defibrillation, nothing. This is the tragedy of this case, Zeke should be alive today, the human consequences are difficult to quantify."Changes must come to the NBA and we are bringing the lawsuit to cause those changes. No other young man should have to die on a basketball court again," he added.According to a release, the lawsuit is filed against the NBA, the Detroit Pistons and SSJ Group (team owners), and the owners of the Grand Rapids Drive and the Deltaplex arena.   1543

ALEXANDRIA, Ind. -- More than a dozen small dogs were rescued from one of the worst cases of animal hoarding officials in Madison County, Indiana say they have ever seen. Madison County Sheriff's deputies responded to a complaint about dogs barking at a home on Trenton Street in Alexandria on Saturday just after 2 p.m. Responding deputies said the smell from the home was so strong that it reached the driveway and the homeowner had to walk around feces to exit the home. Inside the home, deputies found 18 Shih-Tzu and Rat Terrier mixed dogs with severely matted and unkempt fur and fecal matter on the floors throughout the home. The dogs appeared to be well fed, according to deputies but were in need of intensive care. “When we’re called to help with a situation like this, and you can smell the urine from the driveway…you know it’s going to be really bad,” said Maleah Stringer, Director of the Animal Protection League, Inc. (APL), the city of Anderson’s animal shelter. “There has to be some point along the way that people have to realize they can’t handle caring for this many dogs, and they need help. Sadly, too many don’t make that call and the dogs end up paying the price.”Several of the dogs in the home were being kept inside a small bedroom that was covered in mold and feces. The smell of ammonia inside the home was so intense that two deputies had to be treated for exposure. The owner voluntarily surrendered all 18 dogs to the Animal Protection League of Madison County. According to the APL, one of the dogs was in such poor shape that it had to be euthanized.  “We are hopeful the remaining 17 dogs are eventually healthy enough to be adopted," said Stringer. "Right now, we’re looking at about 0 per dog just to get the basic veterinary care. The cost for those with medical issues is going to be even more.”You can follow the dog’s progress and learn more about how you can help on the Animal Protection League of Madison County's Facebook page. 2041
