SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego craft brewery hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic is taking the rare step of opening a restaurant, despite the region going into the state's most restrictive purple tier.Dennis O’Connor says the pandemic hurt Thorne Brewing Company the moment the first shut down kicked in back in March.“It wasn't so much that nobody was coming in, but you also lost all those bars and restaurants that were buying your product,” said O’Connor, who co-founded the brewery in 2012.Not to mention, the price of cans increased, hitting the craft brewer’s distribution.Thorne operates three locations in San Diego County, at least one of which will likely have to shut down as the region enters the most restrictive purple tier, outlawing indoor dining. The restrictions take effect midnight Saturday, to help stop the increased spread of the coronavirus. “We are nowhere near thriving,” O’Connor said. “It’s survival at best.”But O’Connor has a new tool for survival.Connected to Thorne’s Barrio Logan location is a new full service distillery and wood-fired pizza restaurant the brewery finished in march, but never opened. O’Connor says it was a multimillion-dollar project that took years.“It was pretty much just a big blank warehouse,” he said.While the interior can't open, Thorne is converting the restaurant’s outdoor patio into its own barbecue eatery, with a bar in the back called Sideyard Barbecue by Hot Mess (the name of the adjacent pizza restaurant) . It'll seat 84 people and opens to the public Nov. 19.“If outdoor is the new norm then let's do an outdoor and let’s kick (butt) on it,” O’Connor said. “Let's not put it in the street, let’s not put it in a barn tent, let's do something special. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man under arrest was hospitalized Sunday night after San Diego Police said he slipped out of his handcuffs and got a hold of an officer's gun, leading to an officer-involved shooting at the department's downtown headquarters.According to police, a 25-year-old Hispanic man was arrested shortly after 6:20 p.m. after an incident at a downtown San Diego hotel. A hotel security guard reported the man was “acting strange” and threatening others.Officers took the man to SDPD headquarters on 1401 Broadway, but just after 8 p.m. police said the man somehow freed himself from his handcuffs while inside the patrol SUV, and then broke a divider that separates the prisoner seat area from the cargo area.Police said it was in the cargo area were the man located an officer’s backpack that contained a backup handgun.Officers went to check on the arrestee after hearing noise and saw that he was still in the vehicle but armed with a gun. Officers drew their weapons but backed up from the car.Police said, “Officers gave the male commands to drop the weapon, but he refused to do so. The male fired at least one round from the handgun.”The officers felt threatened at that point, prompting them to fire at least one round, hitting the man at least once in the torso.According to police, “The male reached out the car window, opened the door and exited the patrol vehicle. He was still armed with the handgun and would not comply with officers’ directions. The male tried to open both the rear cargo compartment and the driver’s door of the patrol vehicle, despite officers’ orders to stop. Because he still posed a threat, a Police Service Dog was deployed on the male. The canine bit the male and officers were able to approach and subdue him. The male was still armed with the handgun at the time of his arrest.”After officers provided aid to the man at the scene, he was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to police.SDPD’s Homicide Unit is investigating the officer-involved shooting.Police stated the following information in a news release:“The names of the officers involved in this incident are not being released at this time, but they have been with the department for 8 years, 6 years and 10 months, respectively.The investigation and review process for an officer-involved shooting is extremely thorough. When the Homicide Unit completes their investigation, it will be reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office to determine if the officers bear any criminal liability for their actions. The Internal Affairs Unit will conduct an investigation to determine if there were any policy violations, and the Shooting Review Board will evaluate the tactics used by the officers. The Community Review Board on Police Practices will conduct a review of the incident and provide any appropriate recommendations. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man involved in a DUI hit-and-run crash that seriously injured a young boy in the South Bay started his sentencing hearing Wednesday for violating federal immigration laws.Constantino Banda Acosta, a Mexican national who had previously been deported from the U.S. at least 15 times in the past, has been in federal custody since March over federal criminal re-entry charges.He was transferred to federal custody after charges against him stemming from a 2017 crash were dismissed.Banda faced charges in the May 6, 2017, crash in San Ysidro that sent young Lennox Lake to the hospital with serious injuries, including head trauma.Banda was initially charged with drunk driving and hit-and-run after authorities said he ran a stop sign at Dairy Mart Road and slammed his pickup truck into the Lake family’s car as they were heading home from a Disneyland trip.Banda left the scene but was arrested about two miles away after Border Patrol agents spotted his damaged truck parked on a street, police said.San Diego police Officer Michael Muniz testified in the first trial that Banda's blood-alcohol content measured .151 and .152.Following a mistrial, a judge dismissed the case against Banda in March, saying there was no clear evidence that showed he was behind the wheel at the time of the crash.Banda’s lawyers had argued that another man in the truck, Jorge Adame Ariza, may have been driving the truck after a night of drinking with Banda.Adame said Banda got into a fight with another man outside a Chula Vista restaurant before the crash. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new report released by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection states wildfire acreage burned in 2019 is down 96% compared to 2018.Stating from January to August in 2018, 621,784 acres burned. In 2019, only 24,579 acres scorched during the same time period.On top of this, the U.S. Drought Monitor released a report Thursday showing most of California is out of the drought. San Diego is the only county fully highlighted in yellow, indicating it is 'Abnormally Dry'.A very stark contrast to 2018, where most of the map is covered in dark shades of drought. In August of 2018 San Diego was labeled in 'Severe Drought'.While the winter rain cured California's drought, it brought a new problem to firefighters. Tall weeds, and new growth act as kindling, launching fires, according to Cal Fire Captain Thomas Shoots.So we're not out of the woods.Historically San Diego has had some of it's biggest fires in the Fall and Winter, whipped up by Santa Ana winds. "Our fuels are going to continue to dry out an we're not going to be getting rain for quite a while longer so even though we've had the marine layer sticking in and that's really helped us, in the long run those heavy rains that we need, we're probably not going to see for several months," he said. "Late October is usually when we see the Santa Ana winds. We are expecting our normal winds this year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Minnesota man suspected of possessing child pornography may be in San Diego, according to the San Diego Police Department.Jamison Michael Nelson, 40, was the focus of a news release issued Monday to alert the public.San Diego Police did not release details about the charges, but information from DL-online.com indicated a man named Jamison Michael Nelson was charged with six felony counts of possessing pornographic works on a computer.The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received an alert from Google indicating that three images which may have been child pornography had been uploaded to a Gmail account, according to the report.DL-online.com reported that a search of Nelson’s residence turned up a hard drive hidden in a coffee pot.San Diego Police did not indicate why they believe Nelson may be in our area.He is white, six-feet tall, 185 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes. 934
