SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The California Highway Patrol arrested 58 people for alleged intoxicated driving in San Diego County during its annual Thanksgiving holiday enforcement period this year.CHP officers made the arrests between 6 p.m. Wednesday and 6 a.m. Sunday in the agency's jurisdiction in the county, which includes all freeways, as well as roads in unincorporated areas.All available officers were to be deployed to catch drunk or drug- impaired drivers, speeders and other traffic violators during the enforcement period.Last year, 66 people were arrested for impaired driving in San Diego County over the Thanksgiving holiday.Statewide, the agency made 855 arrests for impaired driving during the enforcement period, down from 965 last year. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The city of Santee called on residents today to help it develop a brand to market the city to tourists, businesses and potential residents.Santee recently partnered with North Star Destination Strategies to develop a marketing brand for the city. To that end, the marketing agency launched an online survey for Santee residents to give feedback on the city's strengths, weaknesses and challenges. Responses to the survey are anonymous, according to North Star Destination Strategies."We have partnered with more than 250 communities across North American and I can't emphasize enough the importance of insights gleaned from community members," North Star Founder Don McEachern said.Residents can access the survey at the city's website and submit it electronically. The survey is also available in physical form at Santee City Hall. The surveys must be submitted by Sept. 2 to be considered."It is important for us to celebrate what we love about our community and share it with others," Santee Mayor John Minto said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego city leaders said Tuesday that more than 1,100 people will secure permanent or longer-term housing by the end of the year through Operation Shelter to Home -- the city's COVID-19 homeless shelter at the San Diego Convention Center.The shelter opened its doors in April as a measure to halt the spread of COVID-19 among San Diego's homeless population, and currently houses around 900 people per day, and housed a peak of 1,300 people daily, according to San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer.Faulconer called the project "a public health success story" at a Tuesday morning news conference, saying only 27 residents and staff tested positive for COVID-19 out of more than 9,300 tests administered since the shelter opened.Officials said that to date, more than 840 individuals and 45 families sheltered at the convention center have obtained housing, while around 400 others will soon be moved into housing units the city secured through the purchase of two hotels in Mission Valley and Kearny Mesa. That purchase will convert the hotels into 332 furnished apartment units and residents will receive on-site supportive services, officials said.In addition to those moved into housing, others will be matched to housing resources like vouchers or other rental subsidies, the city said."This pandemic brought our region together like never before to work toward our shared goals of protecting our most vulnerable residents and removing barriers to housing -- and now over 1,100 people will have a permanent place of their own to call home," Faulconer said.San Diego Mayor-elect Todd Gloria said the collaborative efforts to bring Operation Shelter to Home together was "a bright spot" amid the pandemic."This is a testament to what we can do if we choose to do it," said Gloria, who said efforts like Operation Shelter to Home must be continued even after the pandemic ends."It shouldn't take a pandemic to care about our unsheltered population," he said. 1983

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County students' performance on standardized tests in English and math mostly held steady from the previous year, according to scores released Wednesday by the California Department of Education.The performance of San Diego County students on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress tests generally surpassed that of students statewide, according to the department. The CAASPP tests were administered in the spring to more than 3 million students across the state in grades 3-8 and 11. In San Diego County, 26.45% of the more than 250,000 students who took the tests exceeded the state standard in English, up slightly from 25.79 percent the previous year. According to the state, 30.1% met the standard, down slightly from 30.46% last year; 20.89% ``nearly'' met the standard, down slightly from 20.93% last year; and 22.55% failed to meet it, down from 22.82% the previous year. In math, 23.45% exceeded the standard, 21.6% met it, 24.84% nearly met it and 30.12% failed to meet it. The percentages from the previous year were 22.52%, 21.76%, 25.37% and 30.36%, respectively. Statewide, 22.23% exceeded the standard in English, while 28.64% met it, 22.4% nearly met it and 26.73% failed to meet it. In math, 19.69% exceeded the standard, 20.04% met it, 25.41% nearly met it and 34.86% failed to meet it. The statewide scores were all also moderately improved from the previous year. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council voted Monday to place two ballot measures on the March 2020 ballot, including a hotel tax hike that would fund a convention center expansion, homeless services and infrastructure improvements.The tax increase proposed by San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer would raise the city's transient occupancy tax from 10.5% to as high as 15.75% in certain areas of the city, which supporters argue would reap an estimated billion over 42 years.The funding would allow the city to purchase a parcel of land adjacent to the convention center that is currently owned by Fifth Avenue Landing. Once it purchases the land, the city would expand the convention center by roughly 400,000 square feet, from roughly 800,000 square feet to about 1.2 million square feet.RELATED: Hotel tax increase proposed for San DiegoThe land cost is expected to be roughly million, part of an estimated allocation of .5 billion for the purchase and convention center upkeep and marketing. Currently, the mayor appoints a city auditor candidate to serve a 10-year term."The city auditor is vital to holding city administration accountable and ensuring taxpayer dollars are spent properly," Sherman said in a statement. "The administration shouldn't be in charge of choosing who is overseeing the administration. This ballot measure will help ensure this important position is truly independent."Under the proposed measure, the Audit Committee would recruit and choose three candidates for the city auditor position. The council would then choose one of the three candidates to serve as the city auditor for a pair of five-year terms.Since the position was established in 2009, the city has only had one official city auditor, Eduardo Luna, who served nearly all of his term before leaving for a similar position with the city of Beverley Hills in October 2018.Sherman, the Audit Committee chair, proposed the measure after Faulconer appointed DeeDee Alari, a deputy director in the city treasurer's office, to the position in July.
