LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) — Hundreds of protesters gathered at La Mesa City Hall on Saturday to demand justice for women of color, as police issued an order banning certain items in areas around the La Mesa Civic Center.The "We Demand Justice For Our Women Of Color" event called for justice for Breonna Taylor, killed by Louisville police officers in March, and Vanessa Guillen, a soldier at Fort Hood, in Texas, who was killed by another soldier in April, according to a flyer for the event.About 300 demonstrators gathered for the event, according to La Mesa Police. Police said many were gathered in a parking lot at Date Ave. and Allison Ave. near City Hall, before marching southbound from the location. A large group also gathered at the VFW lot at 8118 University Ave. and several groups were reportedly in the area on foot and in vehicles, police added.An ABC 10News photographer captured video showing a separate group of demonstrators with American and "Trump 2020" flags gathering as well. Police said many members of the group identified themselves as part of the “Defend East County” group.Police said that there were several physical altercations between the two groups as one group marched past the VFW. At least one arrest was made: Ryan McAdams, 35, of Jamul, was arrested on charges of battery and possession of pepper spray, as well as a probation violation, according to LMPD.City Councilwoman Dr. Akilah Weber told ABC 10News that she witnessed one scuffle, but saw protesters stop it before it became worse."Some of the members from the protest group jumped in between that one protester and the group of counter-protesters that were going back and forth and reminded the protester that's not what they were there for," Weber said. "They were not there to cause any harm to any residents to any businesses. Not really to disrupt anything but to just get the message out."There was also a minor altercation at the corner of Baltimore Dr. and University Ave., but it was broken up without further incident.LMPD says Chief Walt Vasquez met with organizers for both groups and notified them that officers are there to facilitate a safe event and asked for their cooperation to do so. A heavy law enforcement presence kept both groups separated throughout the day."I would like to thank the organizers of all of the groups in attendance tonight for their efforts to ensure a successful event for all involved. I wholeheartedly support the citizens’ right to peacefully exercise their first amendment rights, and the men and women of the La Mesa Police Department are here to support that. No major injuries were reported.Ahead of the event, LMPD issued a Temporary Area Restriction (TAR) prohibiting certain items near the La Mesa Civic Center area. The items were banned from the area surrounded by University Ave., Spring St., and Allison Ave. The city said anyone violating this order would be prosecuted.The police department said that it had, "made numerous attempts to communicate with organizers of the protest and march so we can work together to ensure a safe environment where their voices can be heard. LA MESA, Calif. (AP) — A man who police say brandished a gun from a van and a woman who then crashed the car with five children inside, injuring them, have been arrested. A person on Friday night reported that a man in La Mesa had a gun inside a moving vehicle. Police say an officer later tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to pull over. Shortly thereafter, the car crashed. The officer pursuing the suspect found five children inside without car seats. Police say the children suffered minor injuries and were taken to a hospital for further tests. 573

LINDA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Police arrested a man after an hours-long standoff in Linda Vista Wednesday night. It happened in an apartment at the end of Via Las Cumbres, near Kelly Street. Police say they were there to serve an arrest warrant on a man suspected of illegally possessing a loaded firearm. Officers on scene repeatedly asked the man to exit the apartment over a megaphone, but he remained inside. Around 9 p.m., officers used a battering ram to break down the front door. They brought out the man in handcuffs and placed him in a patrol vehicle. Lt. Danny Grubbs said they had tried to arrest the man several times before but he was able to get away. In one of those attempts, Grubbs said the man led CHP on a chase through Mission Valley but ended up crashing his van into the San Diego River. He escaped through a drainage ditch, evading capture. (KGTV) - Dr. Greg Skomal and Meteorologist Joe Merchant are working together as they test a new theory on how sea breeze may correlate with set off a predatory chain reaction.So far their research has taken them to the Bahamas and Cape Cod, both locations on the East Coast, given several recent attacks. Skomal says, "It could be weather conditions it could be water temperature so were testing all these various factors to see if there's any patterns including Joe's ideas that drive the behavior of these sharks." Merchant believes a weather condition called a sea breeze may set off a predatory chain reaction. He says it brings nutrient rich deep water closer to the surface, attracting tiny marine life, which attracts larger fish and in turn attract the oceans largest predators, sharks. Fisheries Research Biologist Heidi Dewar tells 10News, "On the East Coast you have the warm Gulf Stream that moves broad on a continental shelf and our coast we have a cold current coming from the north and a very narrow continental shelf." For this reason, we may not be able to use the same theory for our coast."It's not clear that would translate to the West Coast; we have a very different ecosystem over here," Dewar tells 10News. Dewar says pinpointing sharks' locations and predicting where they will be next is going to require much more data and research. (KGTV) — La Jolla's Children's Pool has closed for the season to make way for seal pupping season on the beach's shore.The annual closure went into effect Sunday and will extend until May 15, 2020. During the closure, visitors will not be permitted to use the sheltered beach and, much like the rest of the year, be discouraged from getting too close to the seals.The closure is meant to give harbor seals a safe area to birth and wean their young for the season. Critics argued the closures violated the state Coastal Act and the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act.In June 2018, a state appeals court ruled in favor of the city and the ability to close the beach for the season. A year later, the California Coastal Commission renewed a 10-year permit to close the Children's Pool to human access during pupping season.Critics have threatened to take the matter to the state Supreme Court, but the matter hasn't moved that far as of yet.The Children's Pool was opened in 1932 as a space for inexperienced swimmers to enjoy the water safely behind a seawall. Seals started convening on the beach in the 1990s and have since used it for pupping season.The California Coastal Commission has said they believe the water is unsafe due to bacteria levels from the seals and their excrement and encourage visitors to find somewhere else to swim.Officials have also been forced to post signs warning visitors to keep their distance from seals year-round, as the animals could feel threatened if humans come to close to them or their young. 2122
