SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A teacher at a middle school in Vista says a look inside her classroom reveals her concerns about the lack of social distancing.Laura Whitehouse’s classroom at Rancho Minerva Middle school. The history teacher has been at the school for seven years, and for the first time, she is anxious about going to school."It’s frightening. It’s frightening," said Whitehouse.She says her fears stem from the lack of social distancing. Her classes have 34 kids, with two kids sitting at each table right next to each other."Distance between each table is about two feet. They’re just on top of each other," said Whitehouse.Whitehouse says the kids are supposed to wear masks, but she sometimes has to remind them to put their masks on, and to maintain social distance."They want to clump together. They want to go to each other’s desk," said Whitehouse.After a few days of in-person learning, Whitehouse on Tuesday received plexiglass for her desk and a HEPA air purifier, but she worries it’s not close to being enough. She says there’s no cleaning between classes, as new students rotate in."The germs that are accumulating are just crazy," said Whitehouse.Amid her concerns, there have been at least four positive COVID-19 cases in the Vista Unified School District, sparking new rules about what will trigger a school to revert to distance learning.Whitehouse, who has asthma, says the new rules don’t address what’s putting her and her students most at risk."I am afraid for them. I just want them and their families to be healthy," said Whitehouse.She’s hoping for more cleaning, and more hybrid learning to reduce the number of kids in the classroom."The fear is this is just going to continue to get worse," said Whitehouse.The teachers union tells ABC 10News they are preparing an OSHA complaint detailing the classroom conditions. Superintendent of Schools Matt Doyle emailed ABC 10News the following statement:"... We have spent more than 2 million dollars on personal protective equipment for our staff and schools. These include facemasks, face shields, gloves, plexiglass barriers for teachers and students, HEPA air filters, additional outside sinks, electrostatic disinfecting machines, posters, and more. Every teacher has been given these supplies ... We will continue to work proactively with teachers and staff to make sure that they get what they need in their classrooms." 2410

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman's trip to Mission Bay ended with her, and her car, soaked.The woman, who identified herself as Candy, said she was next to her car on a boat ramp preparing to unload her kayak for a day of fishing and roaming around Mission Bay. Suddenly, her 2002 Audi convertible started rolling as she was unloading gear.Candy jumped into the car and road it into the bay as she tried to get her emergency brake to engage."It just wouldn't. It just kept on going," Candy told 10News. "I was standing straight up in it as it was going down ... quite a scene, I'm sure."The car started sinking into the bay with Candy still inside, before she jumped out to swim back to shore. Her lunch and kayak floated to the other side of the bay as her car became completely submerged, she told 10News."I'm going to have plenty of fish now," she joked. "It's not a big deal, things happen."Two tow trucks were able to fish Candy's vehicle out of the bay and San Diego Lifeguards retrieved her car and kayak, in which she had left her purse and lunch.Candy said she had just purchased the car in November.San Diego Lifeguards reminded locals to exercise caution while using boat ramps. 1216

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An injured cyclist is searching for answers along with some items that disappeared after a possible hit-and-run crash Monday.Rick Cessinger started biking from Ocean Beach to his home in Mission Beach around 4 p.m. Monday after leaving the home of his friend, Janet Kelleher."He put his backpack and helmet on, and rides off," said Kelleher.The handyman biked down Catalina Boulevard. About a mile and a half away, there was a crash near the intersection of Catalina Boulevard and Tennyson Street, leaving Cessinger unconscious. A day later, Cessinger woke up in a hospital with six broken ribs, a fractured collarbone, a punctured lung, and little memory of what happened.A photo of the bike helmet reveals it was cracked in the back. Kelleher retired from a career in law enforcement."It seems to me he was hit from the back and ejected off the bike ... It's bad. It's disgraceful. How does someone hit someone and drive off?" said Kelleher.That question is just one of many. Here's another one: Was Cessinger also robbed? Paramedics left Cessinger a bag with his helmet and shoes. His backpack, containing his wallet and phone, is missing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A University City mother is looking for answers after her daughter was greeted with pornographic images on two consecutive days of remote learning.Chelsea Butler says it happened during her 14-year-old daugther's remote Physical Education class last Thursday morning. Her daughter is a freshman at University City High School."When she logged in, the screen was filled with pornography. It was being streamed during her Zoom call," said Butler.Butler says her stunned daughter quickly logged off and told her about it."Made her extremely uncomfortable. She was really upset by it," said Butler.Butler emailed the school and got a call back from the assistant principal, along with an email sent by the school. Both confirmed the Zoom bomb and an investigation by school police and the administration."The fact my daughter was exposed to it against her will is very upsetting," said Butler.The next day, her daughter tried to log in -- same time, same class -- only to be greeted by more pornographic images. This time, there were dozens of extra people in the room."They apparently got in by stealing students' screen names and changing them by one letter in order to access the classroom. Her screen name was one of the ones used. That's why she was even more upset," said Butler.The incidents is putting remote learning security under the microscope. Butler says right now, her daughter logs onto a password protected web portal to get her Zoom meeting ID.Her daughter enters a virtual waiting room, before the teacher invites her into the class. Butler isn't sure how, but says the precautions clearly must be enhanced.Across the country, numerous news reports have detailed similar Zoom bombs during remote learning involving pornography. Butler says her daughter won't be going back to that class until changes are made. So far, the school has excused the absences."A student just going to class every day should not have to be exposed to porn," said Butler.ABC 10News has reached out to San Diego Unified School District for a comment and are waiting to hear back. 2097

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A trip to get some fast food in the Midway District turned into a nightmare after an encounter with a homeless woman and a syringe.Just before noon last Thursday, Ralph Bedoe was in the drive-thru line at a Taco Bell on Midway Drive. It was the busy lunch hour. He ordered but had to wait once he reached the pay window. As he waited, he saw a homeless woman in her 40s about 25 feet away."She was rambling, throwing up her hands, talking to herself," said Bedoe.He says the woman hit the hood and window of a bus in the parking lot, before she headed toward him."She kind of hit my mirror and started rambling ... I said 'Do you need something?' Don't know if that's when something triggered," said Bedoe.Bedoe's driver side window was open. His arm was resting there."All of a sudden she pulled up her left hand, which had a bag and a syringe with a needle sticking out. She pushed my hand into the car, and when she pushed my hand, the syringe entered my hand," said Bedoe.The woman then smacked his window and wandered off."Disbelief, hoping you're going to wake up from this," said Bedoe.As the shock wore off, the new father thought of his 6-month-old son. "If I did contract something, how is that going to change my life with him? How is this going to change with length of life with him?" said Bedoe.Bedoe must undergo seven months of blood tests to rule out a myriad of diseases, including Hepatitis and HIV. The uncertainty is nerve-wracking."A trip to Taco Bell should not end with a life-changing event," said Bedoe.Bedoe was hit with a ,400 dollar medical bill because he was switching over to new insurance and was not covered at the time.
