SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new cancer treatment is now available at the Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center.This week 31-year-old William Apodaca became the first patient in San Diego County to receive the unique form of targeted cancer therapy. Apodaca was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer three years ago when doctors found neuroendocrine tumors in his pancreas.Neuroendocrine tumors are formed in hormone-making cells. They can grow in spots like your pancreas, stomach, and intestines. “It's a rare tumor that patients can live decades with and the hope is to improve quality of life by minimizing their need for more toxic chronic therapies,” said Dr. Marin Xavier, a Medical Oncologist at Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center. After chemotherapy and other cancer-fighting therapies, Apodaca was finally able to try the new treatment, Lutathera, after it was FDA-approved earlier this year. Lutathera uses radioactively charged proteins to seek and attack cancer cells from the inside out. It is administered in four doses, which are given approximately every other month until they are finished. Apodaca had been traveling to Los Angeles for the treatments but was able to complete his final one in San Diego. He now has more energy and looks forward to going back to work, traveling, and getting married.“This medication is pretty much giving me a second chance at life,” said Apodaca. “Picking up the pieces of where my life was.”The drug works for two to five years, depending on how aggressive the tumors are. Patients who respond well can get retreated.Fifteen local patients have already signed up to get the new treatment and more are expected to come from other cities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A decision regarding the release of a sexually violent predator into Jacumba Hot Springs has been delayed.A judge said he still needed to look at alternatives after researching the proposed home at 45612 Old Highway 80 in Jacumba Hot Springs where 60-year-old Michael Poulsom would live if released. After listening to testimony, the judge says he’s not ready to make a decision about whether to grant his petition to be released from a mental hospital.Poulsom was convicted on three separate occasions, including twice in San Diego, for sex crimes involving children. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison in 1995, but committed to a state hospital as a SVP, a designation for sthose convicted of a sexually violent offense and diagnosed with a mental disorder. In Poulsom's case, he was diagnosed with pedophilia disorder.He has since petitioned for his release into a conditional release program for sex offenders. Doctors have medically cleared the release.RELATED: Bill introduced to keep sexually violent predator hearings open to publicAmong those that testified today was County Supervisor Dianne Jacob, who represents the area where Poulsom would be released. She says there has to be other areas he can go."Where are the other 700 places they checked out. I question that and I question if they checked out over 700," Jacob said.This hearing comes just after the court of appeals threw out a judge’s decision that would have freed the man known as the “Bolder than Most Rapist,” Alvin Quarles. Quarles was charged in more than 50 rapes, robberies, and burglaries in the 80s. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Traffic volume in the San Diego region was at its lowest point this year in April, and volume remains relatively low and speeds higher compared to 2019, according to an interactive map released Tuesday by the San Diego Association of Governments.The SANDAG Highway Hot Spots & Volumes Tracker measures weekday month-by-month vehicle miles traveled on local highways, including traffic speeds and average daily traffic volumes -- which, this year, reflect fewer cars on the road due to the pandemic. The data available on the tracker includes March through October 2020, and users can also compare current data to the same time in 2019. The SANDAG tracker is updated monthly."This new tool is intended to be a resource to assist community members and local leaders with current traffic data to make regional decisions," said Cynthia Burke, SANDAG director of research and program management. "The Highway Hot Spots & Volume Tracker Highway Hot Spots & Volumes Tracker has shown us that the greatest drop in traffic volumes this year were seen in April when we were down 44%, compared to the same time last year."The SANDAG tracker also shows that between June and October, traffic volumes hovered between 15% and 16% lower than compared to 2019.The number of vehicle miles traveled on eight local highways reflected that same trend. Data shows that in October, traffic remained lowest on State Route 163, which was down 29% compared to October 2019, and that State Route 78 and Interstate 805 were the closest to last year's figures at this time -- down 11% and 13%, respectively.The tracker offers multiple ways to interact with and explore the data, such as filtering to focus on points of interest and selecting data points in the chart to make simultaneous comparisons.SANDAG picked several San Diego region hotspots of particular interest, including Southbound Interstate 15 at Deer Springs Road, Southbound Interstate 5 at Manchester Avenue, Northbound I-805 at Governor Drive and Westbound State Route 52 at Mast Boulevard.Speed data at each of the hot spots during morning peak periods revealed that in October, speeds were up an average of about 6 mph compared to March.The largest increases were seen at Northbound I-805 at I-15 -- 13.7 mph faster in October -- and Westbound Interstate 8 at Waring Road -- 10.5 mph faster.
