CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — As schools try to navigate the future of in-person education in the era of coronavirus, Southwestern College is already returning some students to campus. The Southwestern College Higher Education Center in Otay Mesa welcomed nursing and health occupational students, along with students in the public safety program, back to campus June 1. These students are training to fill jobs like nurses, EMTs, paramedics, and more.Dean Sylvia Cornejo said since March, they have been using technology for remote learning, but the school has been planning on bringing these students back as quickly as possible because of their careers and the need for essential workers right now.RELATED: San Diego Office of Education releases guidance to reopen schools“The students got as far as they could with online instruction but really we needed to be able to bring them back to campus for all of their practical labs,” she said.She said this location has returned to campus because of the nature of the students, but most of the five Southwestern College locations will remain remote for the fall term. (KGTV) - Chula Vista neighbors are dealing with the aftermath of a San Diego Gas and Electric equipment malfunction that triggered a power outage and caused their homes to smoke.Residents on Country Club Circle told 10News about the outage Saturday night. Electricity was restored and everything seemed fine, they said, but they woke up to sparked outlets, smoke and fire Sunday morning.“Every single room sounded like someone came in with gunshots,” said Mona Hernandez. “My girls got up screaming ‘fire’ in one of the rooms and I thought they were on fire. I feared they were actually on fire until I got to see them.”SDG&E said the equipment failure involved a transformer and affected more than 400 homes in the area.One woman said she was concerned about her air conditioning and heating working for her son.“He’s disabled. We need the heater to use. He's going to have open brain surgery next week. You people from SDG&E should have been out here.”She also said her smart television was destroyed by the outage and feels she deserves more than what SDG&E is offering to replace it.“ for a Toshiba smart TV is not very nice.”SDG&E said it has representatives assisting customers with claims. (KGTV) - A ruptured gas line forced one building to evacuate in Chula Vista Friday.Chula Vista fire crews discovered a one-inch gas line sheared with gas blowing in the 100 block of 3rd Avenue around 3 p.m. A nearby building was evacuated, according to CVFD.Nearby Fredericka Manor Retirement Community also advised its residents and visitors to shelter in place.Firefighters were not able to immediately determine the cause of the break. (KGTV) - The scared whimpers of a little dog which had been missing from his Eastlake home for days led to a courageous rescue by a Chula Vista firefighter Thursday morning.The 30-pound dog, Sammy, disappeared from his home in Eastlake Trails Monday, according to Chula Vista Fire Department officials.Early Thursday morning, Sammy’s family noticed sounds coming from a drainage pipe near their home on Secret Canyon Place.Family members called the fire department which responded, along with Chula Vista Public Works crews and Chula Vista Police, to find the dog in an 18-inch drainage pipe underground.Firefighter Jed Burt went down a manhole and crawled through the drainage pipe, which was roughly the size of his helmet, to reach Sammy.When the dog refused to come out on his own, Burt pushed the dog through the pipe to another manhole nearby.Video posted on the IAFF Local 2180 Chula Vista Firefighters union Instagram account shows the moment Sammy reached the surface.Sammy was reunited with his family and suffered no apparent injuries.10News is working to bring you developments in this story. 1137

(KGTV) - Chula Vista's city council will revisit whether to legalize the sale of recreational marijuana this month.City leaders said earlier this month they would take a look at the draft of the proposal that would allow Chula Vista to permit, license, and fully regulate commercial marijuana. The council will open the matter again during their Feb. 27 meeting.If passed, Chula Vista's ordinance would allow for 12 commercial licenses, including eight storefronts. Pot shop will be required to be at least 150 feet from homes and for applicants to have a year of experience operating a legal marijuana business.RELATED:  654
