Feeding San Diego’s goal is to eliminate these worries and end food insecurity in San Diego. According to Feeding San Diego, giving kids healthy food options will help them succeed in the classroom. “It helps with the snacks and the munching. Instead of some chips or candy, they get some fruits and vegetables up in their system. It makes me feel like a good mom,” Cynthia Correa said. Correa is a mom of four and is part of Feeding San Diego's program in Oceanside, where she visits San Luis Rey Elementary school each month to pick out fresh fruits, vegetables, and other items for her and her family. Correa says the free access has given her some financial relief. “Healthier food seems to be more expensive than junk food. So, it has helped my family a lot. It’s taking the weight off,” Correa said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Despite a recent drop, gas prices closed the year higher than they’ve been since 2013, according to City News Service. The average price for a gallon of regular gas dropped for the 11th day Tuesday, decreasing three-tenths of a cent to .34. The average price has fallen 7.6 cents during the streak, according to figures from AAA. The average price is 4.7 cents less than a week ago and 20.4 cents less than a month ago. Despite the drop in prices, regular gasoline is 21.4 cents more than a year ago. The sharp increase in the cost of gas was felt around California after Governor Jerry Brown signed a gas tax increase that went into effect in 2017. In November of 2018, California voters turned down Proposition 6. The measure would have repealed the most recent gas tax hike and ensured that no new gas taxes get passed without voter approval. 876

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Evidence left at a hit-and-run crash scene in Valencia Park could help police track down the driver responsible for the wreckage.At around 10:30 p.m. Sunday, San Diego police were called to a crash reported at Castana Street and San Jacinto Drive involving a fire hydrant.Officers arrived to find a sheared hydrant with a geyser spewing water about 50 feet in the air.While the vehicle in the crash was gone when officers got the scene, police found a bumper with a license plate that could help in the investigation. 545

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Dominic Pizarro lost his mom and his little sister on Thursday, after a wrong-way driver drove into their SUV on Interstate 805. Pizarro spoke with 10News as he and his grandfather drove back to San Diego to support Dominic's older brother - who was the first to hear the tragic news. Trevor Heitmann, 18, was behind the wheel of the 2014 McLaren?sports car that collided with the SUV, killing himself, and 43-year-old Aileen Pizarro and her 12-year-old daughter, Aryana. "Both of them were the most caring...people full of life, you've ever met in the world," Pizarro said. The way his mother and sister died has dominated local news outlets since it happened.Heitmann was traveling at high speeds Thursday, heading southbound in a northbound HOV lane at about 4:30 p.m. near La Jolla Village Dr. before the collision, CHP said. Troopers believe he entered via an HOV lane access at Carol Canyon Rd. Pizarro said his family was as close as can be - the siblings were all musicians. "(Aryana) was just the most unique little girl in the whole wide world," he said. "She was your average girly girl at times, and at times she was this feisty little 12-year-old who was just so smart, so mature for her age."The siblings were raised by their mom and grandfather. Their mom Aileen was a therapist devoted to helping others.  "Everything (my mom and grandpa) had went to us," Pizarro said. "Every single dollar, every single cent was put into me and my brother and sister."Pizarro said the family will never forget their caring mother and feisty sister, as he also recalled the last conversation he had with Aryana. "She was showing me all these unicorn things she got, unicorn pencils, unicorn notebooks," he said. "She was showing me everything that she was going to wear or take to school because she was so proud of everything that mom had gotten her for school."Aryana was set to start seventh grade at the School of Creative and Performing Arts on Monday.Pizarro set up a GoFundMe page to support the family during this tough time, but also asked those aware of the story for their prayers.  2175
