(KGTV) - Cal Fire completed even more training this year, this time integrated with other agencies, sharpening their firefighting skills.Cal Fire sprang into action Wednesday, attacking the Vista Fire in Dehesa."I was shocked, so many helicopters, dropping off so many bodies, when you looked at the hill, gosh I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say there were 100 firefighters on that hill," neighbor Sherry German said.When the fire started, German's dog Joey let her know something was wrong. When she let him out, she heard the sirens coming, turned and saw the flames right next-door."I panicked when I saw the flames, I told my husband I'm out of here, I'm grabbing the dog, I'm grabbing my work and I'm out of here," German said.Some of the force fighting that fire took off from the Ramona Air Attack Base. On the tarmac perch two planes equipped to make retardant drops, a guide plane for the air buses, two tanks holding 50,000 gallons of retardant mixed with water, ready to go. They also have more than a dozen bags of red retardant powder, each weighing a ton.They used two and a half bags in the Vista Fire fight."This is the peak part of our season so we're definitely staffed up and ready to go, Cal Fire has a ton of resources," Public Information Officer Thomas Shoots said. DECATUR TOWNSHIP, Ind. — More than 30 states have laws or local ordinances that prevent drivers from warming up their car without being inside of it, but it’s legal in Indiana – and every year, Hoosier drivers pay the price.“My husband started my car up for me to take my son to school and I came back out and my car was gone,” said Stacy Smith.Smith said her van had only been sitting in the driveway of her Indiana home and running for about 15 minutes. But that’s all it took for a thief to jump inside and drive away.Car thefts are all too common in Indianapolis. Over the past week, police have taken reports for at least 139 different incidents. Of those, at least 10 were listed as either warming up or running at the time they were stolen.Smith, who works for the Department of Corrections, says she’s been starting her car and letting it idle in the driveway for years, but it only took one time for her to learn an expensive lesson.The thieves didn’t just get away with her van.“They took my duty belt – it has my handcuffs, my OC (pepper spray), had all my kid's car seats,” said Smith.Police are asking drivers to think twice about starting their vehicles to warm them, and if you want it warmed before you leave to make sure you’re inside of it when it’s on.The other option police suggest is using a remote start with a kill switch, in case something happens. DENVER, Colo. - A group of teenagers is using social media to try to inspire younger generations to sign up to work at the election polls this November.The Poll Hero Project was started by a group of teens from Denver East High School as well as students from Princeton University as a way to inspire their peers to get involved.“I never really expected it to go anywhere. I mean, we don’t really have any money or really any advertising. It’s really just been using social media to get our message out,” said Leo Kamin, one of the project’s co-founders.Kamin is a 17-year-old who signed up to be a poll worker during the previous election for the first time after mother found out about the student poll worker program through the Colorado Secretary of State’s website and encouraged him to join.In Colorado, you must be 16 in order to serve as a poll worker. It is a paid position.“It really did open my eyes just to the process and how many things you have to have right,” Kamin said.Along with learning the intricacies of how the election process works, Kamin says he was able to bring his own set of skills to the polling place.“In Colorado, you can change your registration on your phone, and I was the only one of the greeters, the poll workers, who understood how to sort of explaining that on the website,” Kamin said. “I think there is that knowledge that comes from the people who have done this a lot and have voted for before, but I think there are also things that younger people bring that are valuable.”Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, some areas are struggling to find enough poll workers to work on election day.Colorado has not had that problem for the most part, and places like Denver and Jefferson County say they experienced record interest this election.Still, the teens are using social media to encourage students across the country to check in with their counties to see whether they need help.One of the students who decided to sign up to be a poll worker for the first time is Ben Ginsberg. He’s still going through the training process to be ready for election day but says he’s excited about the opportunity.“I thought it was a great opportunity to help out and play my part,” Ginsberg said.Along with being a first-time poll worker, Ginsberg is also a first-time voter in this general election after participating in the primary.“I’m super excited to vote in the presidential election. It’s even more important than the primaries obviously. I think that was kind of my way to express my personal views,” Ginsberg said.He believes there is more interest in politics these days among his peers and many of his friends are excited for the opportunity to vote.Kamin is not so lucky; he missed the age deadline to be able to vote this election by just a couple of weeks. Still, Kamin says he’s excited to be able to have an opportunity to contribute.“I feel like because I can’t vote it makes it even more important to participate,” he said. “There are not many things you can do as a 17-year-old but this is one of them.”He’s still surprised by just how much popularity the project has garnered despite the fact that they have no money for advertising and have only been using social media to get their message out.Both teens will be missing school Monday and Tuesday in order to work the polls but say they hope their teachers and classmates understand the importance of the role they are playing in democracy. They hope even more teenagers will consider signing up in the future.“Sure, you may not be in charge of the country now, but you will be in the future, and this is your country. DENVER, Colorado — While authorities said the suspicious package found outside the Colorado State Capitol Wednesday morning was not an issue, they are still investigating where it came from, what it is and why it was placed on the Capitol steps. Around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, authorities responded to the west steps of the Colorado State Capitol after a suspicious package was located. The steps were taped off for about half an hour while authorities, including a bomb squad, examined the scene. All nearby streets remained open.By 9 a.m., Colorado State Patrol confirmed the situation had been resolved and was a "non-issue."Trooper Gary Cutler with CSP said an American flag had been wrapped around the package and there were visible wires sticking out of it. Authorities are still investigating the package to determine where it came from and why it was placed on the steps.Cutler said they are not looking for any suspects in particular as of 10:40 a.m. 974
