SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego restaurant group is turning to an old trend to try to make it through the latest shutdown order.The order, which went into effect Monday, relegated restaurants to takeout and delivery only, decimating their bottom line and forcing them to cut jobs and reduce hours."Right now the way it's been, it's not profitable," said Alex Navarrete, general manager of Karina's restaurant group. "We're giving everybody one shifts, two shifts, but what is that going to do?"Karina's restaurant group has nine establishments around the county. Prior to the pandemic, it had dozens of workers at each location. Now, it has four workers on the clock at anytime at each. "They all want to work, I just don't have hours now, since we're only doing takeout," Navarrete said. Navarette is now trying to go above and beyond for his company and his employees - even as his options are limited. Four of the group's restaurants -- two in the Otay Ranch mall, and others in Chula Vista and La Jolla -- will try to take advantage of their parking lots. They're essentially turning into car hops, where patrons get their food delivered to their cars and eat in the parking lot. "This would be a perfect time to get that cobwebs off the motor home and bring it out, bring the family out," he said. Curbside pickup for restaurant food is nothing new, but the Karina's group is eyeing making it more festive, with potentiality live music or a DJ outdoors at its two restaurants in the Otay Ranch Mall - Karina's Mexican Seafood and Savoie Italian Eatery. Navaraette said by staying and eating in the car, guests could order their food in courses, so the tacos and other entrees don't get soggy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A young man was trapped in his car after a crash on southbound Interstate 15 at I-805 Monday afternoon.The solo-vehicle crash happened about 1:30 p.m. The man went off the freeway and into a tree, leaving his car a mangled wreck.San Diego Fire Captain Steve Salasz described the rescue as a “complicated effort”.Several firefighters used saws to free the man, whose foot was stuck in a floorboard.The man, who was alert and talking during the rescue, was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital for treatment.There was no word on his condition but Salasz described his injuries as “severe”.Investigators did not release the cause of the crash. 662

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - According to the San Diego Association of Governments, the unemployment rate in San Diego County was just under 16% at the end of June. The good news is that number is down from the 25% unemployment in May. Still, more than 250,000 San Diegans are unemployed, and many are hurting financially. However, ABC 10News did discover a select group that plans for unforeseen events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, and they seem to be doing just fine. What's their secret? FIRE.FIRE stands for Financial Independence Retire Early. We profiled this group back in November. Last fall, we met Jennifer Mah, a money coach and Community Manager for the San Diego FIRE chapter called Choose-FI before screening a documentary on the subject. And we learned then that many in the Financial Independence community save an average of 40% of their income. So we wanted to know, how are they doing now in the middle of this financial meltdown?"This is the first time in an economic downturn or instability that I've ever had a sense of strength," says Mah over a recent Zoom interview.And Jennifer's not alone. She introduced us to two couples with diverse stories."As soon as quarantine started and I was laid off, that was super scary for me," adds Grace Damazo.But not as scary for Grace and Mike Damazo had they not been part of the Choose-FI community. The Damazo's are a self-described frugal couple in their 30's. Yes, they save more money than many of their peers, but they're also investing in real estate. And before the pandemic hit, they sold one of their cars to cut back on expenses. If they travel, they do it with credit card bonuses, meal prep to save instead of eating out, and if they do, they take advantage of happy hours or specials."And also Grace, cutting my hair," says Mike laughing.From the looks of it, Grace is doing a great job with those clippers, and it all adds up. Mike's position in the Navy is, of course, considered essential. But Grace, a fitness instructor, was laid off at a big box gym and immediately transitioned her clients online. The pandemic only has them doubling down on saving."It was a realization that this was the right path, at least for us, and we need to fast track it," adds Grace.And then there is Wendy and Curtis Mays. A couple in their 50's, with six kids. If you think 50 is too late to start saving, think again. The Mays claim they were in a million-dollar hole just three years ago, and then they found Choose-FI."It's been a long time of having that fear in the back of our minds, and to not have it anymore is just incredible," says a relieved Wendy Mays.Wendy and Curtis sold their house and started renting because they could save more money and pay down debt. Family outings are free when possible, like a trip to the beach. They've paid down so much debt; Wendy was able to quit her full-time job and co-host her own financial consulting business. Curtis says the key is moving past the stigma of debt, talking with others, and figuring out what works best."They're able to do it, and we're able to do it, we just put it in our form with our platform, with our background, with our kids," adds Curtis Mays.Both couples were on what they call a 50-50 plan. 50% of their income goes straight to savings, and 50% to pay down debt. But in these uncertain times, they say they're saving even more because you never know what tomorrow will bring. 3417

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A South Bay high school was placed on lockdown while police searched a vehicle outside the campus.San Diego Police placed Southwest High School under lockdown while officers searched a vehicle they stopped on Hollister Street, just outside campus.Police said the traffic stop was a result of someone reporting they saw a gun. The suspected vehicle was located and pulled over.Southwest High was placed on lockdown as a precaution and police said the campus wasn't being threatened - the traffic stop just happened to occur outside the school property.Police found a BB gun inside the vehicle. No shots were fired and no one was injured.The lockdown was later lifted.Police said they encourage anyone who thinks they see a weapon to report it to authorities. 799

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Serra Mesa family expecting nearly ,000 in stimulus funds in April is still waiting.Mark Perry, who is married with four children, says his family was expecting a big stimulus check. Both he and his wife still have their jobs, but the check will come in handy."Really looking forward to getting the check. I was looking at a check coming fairly quickly, a direct deposit coming of 00," said Perry.Quickly, because Perry had the same bank account for the last 18 years, his IRS refund received via direct deposit every year, including one in April. Taxpayers like Perry should have received their checks during the week of April 13th, a week which came and went for Perry."Halfway through May, I realized something is really up here," said Perry.That's when Perry started logging onto the IRS 'Check My Payment' link, over and over. Hundreds of times."I probably tried a dozen times just last night. The result is always the same," said Perry.That result was this."Got an error message. Either can't verify or don't qualify. None of those things are correct," said Perry.Perry says when he called the number designated by the IRS for 'Economic Impact Payment' questions, he got nowhere."You end up in the same loop, back in the same place where you started from. There's no one you can actually speak to," said Perry.He's written politicians, and every day, he logs onto the IRS site. And he's not alone."I know of two other people in the exact same position I am. I'm frustrated mostly with the IRS website platform, which seems broken to me," said Perry.According to the IRS, 159 million Americans have received their stimulus payments with paper checks still being mailed out in June.An IRS spokesperson told 10news they are asking for patience from the public and continue to working on getting "up to speed" with the online platform.
