SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego’s City Council voted 8-1 Monday evening to ease parking requirements for certain housing projects, which they say will make it easier for developers to build new homes. Mayor Kevin Faulconer said Monday that the current parking rules are outdated, but opponents say San Diego isn’t ready for the changes and that the city should focus on improving transportation. The plan gets rid of parking requirements for multi-family units in neighborhoods within half a mile of mass transit. “While it took way too long to get this ordinance approved, I praise my colleagues for finally getting it across the finish line,” said Councilmember Scott Sherman. “This is good news, but our work to fix San Diego’s housing crisis is nowhere near complete. We must continue pushing innovative strategies to improve housing affordability and we can’t wait two years for approval.”Before Monday’s vote, at least one parking spot per unit was required. The new policy gives residents who don’t have a car the option of paying less for housing. Supporters say the move makes it easier for developers to build and help the city reach it’s climate action goals. Those opposed say San Diego doesn’t have the public transportation to support the change. Critics also say roughly 94 percent of San Diego residents own a car. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — She's a pre-med student at UCSD with hopes of becoming a neurosurgeon, and for the last year-and-a-half, Shea Cruise has been homeless.Like so many on the UCSD campus, the senior's plate is pretty full. The neuroscience student has a rigorous course load."I was taking 20 units this quarter, full time is 12," said Cruise, 23.But her studies aren't the only thing occupying her thoughts. When classes are over and she's finished her shift as a server, Cruise must figure out where she's going to sleep.She calls her 2006 Ford Focus home. She's parked it in store lots, near the beach and in campus parking structures overnight. She qualifies for some financial aid but it's enough to cover her tuition. Shortly after transferring to the school two summers ago from Cerro Coso Community College in Ridgecrest, she decided to live in her car to save money. "I shower in the gym on campus," said Cruise.Cruise also borrows her textbooks — whatever it takes. "This was something I had to do to reach my goals. Something I was willing to sacrifice," said Cruise. Then, four weeks ago came an unexpected medical diagnosis, which will force her to take leave from her job for appointments and treatment.Cruise started a Gofundme campaign to help with tuition and other expenses, at the same time revealing a truth few on campus were aware of."It's an invisible population. Speaking about it hopefully will bring more light not to me but others in my position," said Cruise.As for her academic position, she currently has a 3.8 GPA and is determined to graduate this June."I don't look at my situation as a victim. I look at it as a lesson. It teaches me to be more empathetic toward other people. I hope to one day be able to help people," said Cruise.If she's able to graduate, she'll spend some time saving up money before applying for medical schools like Stanford, UCLA and Harvard next year. 1923

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego’s unemployment rate is near historic lows, but plenty of people are still out of work. 10News is exploring ways to help you improve your competitive edge in the job market. “I freelance, and I have a part-time job that has been helping me get through,” said Katie Orchard, who has been looking for full-time work for the past four months. Orchard is in search of stability, but in a competitive job market, that search becomes more difficult. However, the employment rate in San Diego is also down. With a job market continually changing, how do you improve your edge and stand out?According to Allie Barara and Dana Ellison, both recruiters at Creative Circle in San Diego, the key to standing out, is your resume. It’s kinda like that black hole of the unknown once you submit your resume,” said Allie Barara. Barara says, job candidates need to be specific with programs and software. “I think what a lot of people miss on their resume, is that they don’t spell out the specific softwares they are proficient in. I think showing that at the top of their resume is really going to highlight and give you those extra buzzwords,” said Barara. Another way to make your resume stand out is including or obtaining certificates in your specific field of interest. According to Dana Ellison, a senior recruiter, a common mistake job seekers make is not applying for the right job.“I say titles are a little nebulous. If you see a job and say hey this describes all the skill sets I do, but it’s not how I’m marketing myself, that would be a great way to start,” said Ellison. Ellison also suggests job seekers ditch the fluff words to make room for things that matter. “If someone says they are a good communicator, a team player, a fast learner, those are things literally everyone says, so those things can be left off,” said Ellison. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some places of worship around San Diego County appear to be planning to continue holding services on their property despite the state’s order regarding indoor operations.On Monday, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced pandemic-related restrictions for certain businesses and activities, and places of worship were included on California’s list.Via a Wednesday evening livestream, Kearny Mesa-based Awaken Church broadcasted their service in which there were people in attendance. On their website, Awaken Church promoted in-person women’s prayer meetings held at each of their campuses.ABC 10News asked church leaders to clarify the meeting, and an Awaken pastor said they were holding a prayer protest.At the church’s Balboa Avenue campus, a disclaimer is posted on doors that reads, in part: “By entering this building where COVID-19 virus may possibly exist, despite efforts and attempts at utilizing and employing CDC Public Health Guidelines, you take full responsibility for the decision to attend our services and activities.”A viewer brought a Facebook post by Lighthouse Baptist Church to ABC 10News’ attention. In the post, the Lemon Grove church says, in part: “We are aware of the current mandates of our Governor and County. But, by God’s grace will continue with their current schedule of live worship services on the property.”It’s unclear whether those services will be inside or outside.ABC 10News reached out to both churches for further comment, but neither have returned calls as of late Thursday morning.A woman who asked not to be identified told ABC 10News that her church also invited her back. She said she believes the places of worship that stay open are doing more harm than good.“They want things to be back to normal, everyone does. But they aren’t being realistic about it. I think they need to wait this out and be patient and slow the spread and it will be safer for parishioners, and the community and U.S. at large,” the woman said.As far as the enforcement of the state’s order, if the place of worship falls under San Diego County jurisdiction, it will be up to the sheriff’s department.If it’s within the city, it will be up to the police agency in that city to enforce. 2227
