Protests erupted late Monday on the campus of the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, after police fatally shot a student who allegedly had a knife.The violence took place around the time of a planned vigil for the student, Scout Schultz, 21, who was killed Saturday. Video on social media showed a police car in flames.Georgia Tech police urged students to stay inside and lock their doors because of "violent protests on campus."The fatal encounter on Saturday happened after police responded to a 911 call at 11:17 p.m. reporting a suspicious person on campus. The caller said the person -- described as a white male with long blond hair, white T-shirt and blue jeans, possibly intoxicated -- was holding a knife and possibly a gun.The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Schultz made that 911 call. 819

Residents of a hospice in London woke up Sunday to a pleasant and sweet-smelling surprise: the flowers that surrounded the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on their wedding day.The donated flowers, which adorned both St. George's Chapel and St. George's Hall in Windsor on Saturday, were designed by Philippa Craddock and a team of florists from Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.The bouquets were made up of foxgloves, peonies, and white garden roses, many of which were sourced from the gardens and parkland of the royal-owned Crown Estate and Windsor Great Park.Kensington Palace confirmed that the flowers were donated to a number of charities and hospices. One recipient was St. Joseph's in Hackney, east London. "To see the faces of the patients when they received the flowers was just fantastic," hospice spokeswoman Claire Learner told CNN.St Joseph's has a long history of royal connections, having been visited by Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Diana and, most recently, Prince Edward, who toured the grounds in 2015, the hospice said.The ties to the royal family do not stop there. Pauline Clayton, an 89-year-old patient, once worked as an embroideress to Norman Hartnell, one of the Queen's dressmakers.She revealed that aged just 19, she worked for almost 50 hours on the train of the Queen's own wedding dress, according to the UK's Press Association.Clayton added that she thought the gesture to donate the flowers was "lovely."For Father Peter-Michael Scott, the hospice's lead chaplain, the gesture signified something altogether more fundamental."It is about the energy of love. President Donald Trump's confidant Roger Stone is rebuffing a request from the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee for documents and an interview connected to 2016 Russian election meddling, invoking his Fifth Amendment rights.Stone's attorney Grant Smith sent a letter to Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California stating that Stone was declining Feinstein's requests, which she released over Twitter on Tuesday."The requests, as previously stated to staff, are far too overbroad, far too overreaching, far too wide ranging both in their all-embracing list of persons to whom the request could relate with whom Mr. Stone has communicated over the past three years, and the 'documents concerning' imprecision of the requests," Smith wrote."Mr. Stone's invocation of his Fifth Amendment privilege must be understood by all to be the assertion of a Constitutional right by an innocent citizen who denounces secrecy," the letter states.Smith noted that Stone has already testified to the House Intelligence Committee. Special counsel Robert Mueller is also investigating whether Stone was communicating with Julian Assange and WikiLeaks during the 2016 election either directly or through intermediaries.As the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Feinstein has no power to compel Stone to testify or produce documents. When Democrats take back the House in January, the House Intelligence Committee may have a renewed interest in Stone, as Rep. President George W. Bush gave a tearful eulogy to his father, President George H.W. Bush, Wednesday at a state funeral for the 41st president of the United States.The younger Bush choked up as he quoted his father's inaugural address from 1989."In his inaugural address, the 41st President of the United States said this: 'We cannot hope to only leave our children a bigger car, a bigger bank account,'" Bush said.
