An elaborate table is set, and Argentinian tango music fills the room in Mirta Rinaldi’s apartment in NYC’s Queens. Her guests: five strangers, who came together to learn about the culture of Rinaldi’s home country of Argentina. “Cooking has been my passion all my life, so teaching this from my home and sharing my culture, it's a gift,” Rinaldi says.Rinaldi is just one of a network of 14 instructors who are part of the League of Kitchens, a group of immigrants from around the world who welcome strangers inside their homes. The experience allows those from other countries to impart their culture and family recipes onto eager students, regardless of their cooking ability.Rinaldi believes that when people learn about someone’s culture, they learn to respect each other's differences. Holly is cutting the drive through time by 10 to 15 seconds.For 20 years, worker Orlina has been taking orders and serving up food. She says Holly is one of the most helpful employees on staff. “It’s really fast and helps us with the speed a lot,” she says.The creator behind this artificial intelligence technology is Valyant. Rob Carpenter, the CEO of the company, says as jobs evolve and change, new jobs become available. As with most new technology, Carpenter says they’re still working out all the kinks. “It’s almost understanding the almost infinite ways to that people can ask for a cheeseburger,” Carpenter explains. “There are also the different accents you have to content with and the background noises.” While customers find the idea of Holly fun, their still unsure. “It was awkward,” says one customer. “And humans are just better and more responsive and talkative.” Carpenter admits Holly isn't the perfect employee, but he says in the next five years, you will see more robots at big name stores and fast-food restaurants."Right now, this is ground zero handling drive through,” he says. “Eventually, we are going to start seeing it in more tangible ways, where it can actually carry on a more fluid conversation." AURORA, Colo. -- Just as hundreds of restaurants are being forced to close down indoor dining, yet again, In-N-Out Burger made its debut in Colorado on Friday.Hundreds waited in line for hours to get a burger from the California-based fast-food chain.“It’s just a journey today,” said Charly, who came to relieve her dad who waited for three hours, but then had to go to work without making it to the front of the line.“Three or four hours wasn’t unexpected,” said Bob Fischer. “So, it’s definitely worth the wait.”Whether it was worth the wait depends on who you asked.But is it worth it? “No,” said Charly. “I don’t even eat beef. I’m just here for (my sister) and my dad.”In-N-Out’s arrival in Colorado comes at the most ill-timed or opportune moment, depending on your perspective.“I ordered about five cheeseburgers and five animal fries,” said one In-N-Out fan who did not wish to be identified. “It’s all about the uniqueness of the secret menu,” Fischer said.“I grew up in California, so we were always eating it,” said Maddie Duncan.Just around the corner, at the mom-and-pop NGL Burgers, owner Jesus Pulido is preparing to close to indoor dining yet again.“Tomorrow it’s back to take-out only or I can put some tables outside,” Pulido said.After 16 years in business in Aurora, Pulido, who’s also from California, certainly has his fans, too.“The food speaks for itself,” said an NGL regular named Zeke.“I grew up in L.A. HOUSTON, Texas – Fifty years ago, when the first man walked on the moon, most of the country was glued to a television set, watching in awe. It was a historic and captivating moment, made possible by people like Jerry Woodfill. “I, at Johnson Space Center in Houston, am the last engineer that worked directly on the Apollo mission to the moon,” said Woodfill. “I was the alarm system engineer.” There was only one alarm system engineer for the Apollo 11 mission. “John Kennedy put it like this, when he spoke before Congress on May 25, 1961, ‘we send a man to the moon and we want him to return home safely to the Earth,’” Woodfill said. “Now the guy that was responsible, I think, for returning him safely, that was my assignment.” It was a job well done, because the three astronauts that went to the moon for the first time, all made it back safely. Jerry Woodfill would go on after Apollo 11 to be a part of the Apollo 13 mission and continued to work for NASA for more than five decades. In fact, at 76 he is still working at the Johnson Space Center in Houston with no plan on retiring anytime soon. Part of the reason he wants to stick around at NASA is because of a seemingly new resurgence of excitement about space and there’s a new mission to go back to the moon. “In certain areas [going back to space this time] it’s more exciting,” said Woodfill. “Our technology level has so much advanced.” With better technology now, and more of an understanding of space, Woodfill, knows it is going to be easier to get a man and woman to the moon and the possibilities are greater. This time, the plan is stay on the moon longer, NASA is planning to have a satellite space center called Gateway orbit the moon. Astronauts could live on Gateway and go back and forth to the moon’s surface. There, this time around, astronauts will focus on a part of the moon’s surface where there are craters. In those craters, satellite imaging shows there is ice water. Astronauts hope to find that water, and other elements that could lead to a possible fuel source to head to Mars. Woodfill, who was a part of the first mission to the moon, hopes to still be at NASA for the first manned mission to Mars. “There’s something inside of me that says we can come up with something. That could make it doable. You know it the next 10 years. Something could happen,” he said. If it doesn’t happen while the Apollo mission alarm engineer is still around, he hopes the generation that gets to see a man on Mars will be as excited about it as he would be. “I thank the Lord that I was able to work for NASA and be involved in aerospace, and not just aerospace but all the technology that contributed to doing the things we’ve done,” said Woodfill. “There are 30,000 things from a pacemaker in your heart to an advanced hearing aid that came because we went to the moon.”There are likely to be thousands of more technological advances on earth as a result of NASA heading back to the moon again. 2999
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Almost every morning for the last 35 years, a 21-car-train pulls into Burlington, Vermont, with roughly 1,500 tons of wood chips that help power the city. Wood burning represents 30% of Burlington’s power grid, and 20% comes from solar panels and wind turbines. In 2014, when Burlington opened a hydro plant, that took over the remaining 50% of the city’s power grid and marked a historic moment – Burlington was now the first city in the U.S. to run 100% on renewable energy. “We had our challenges at the beginning,” said David MacDonnell. “There were a lot of growing pains that we went through.” MacDonnell knows firsthand about the path to the city’s energy milestone. He moved to Burlington in 1983 and began working for the city’s electric company, Burlington Electric Department, in 1984. MacDonnell started as an operator at B.E.D.’s McNeil Generating Station. “When I came, the plant was still in construction,” said MacDonnell. At McNeil’s, at that time, Burlington Electric was just starting to experiment with wood as a possible energy source. “It was very groundbreaking stuff at the time,” MacDonnell added. The idea stemmed from the company looking for a more cost-effective energy source, and wood proved to be that. But over the years, the company and the community realized there were added benefits. “The fuel budget last year was million and if you think about it, we get our fuel with in a 60-mile radius of this plant. We keep a lot of money local for the community. You know the mom and pop stores, loggers, and truckers. That really supports the whole area,” MacDonnell explained. With wood as the first renewable energy source, Burlington has also been less affected by the volatile fossil fuel industry so customer rates have been stable for more than a decade. “Burlington Electric has successful achieved the 100% renewable energy goal without raising rates for over a decade now, so we prove it is possible to maintain rates,” said Paul Pikna, a senior generation engineer at Burlington Electric. “One could even argue, if you count inflation, we’ve decreased rates over the decade.” But perhaps the biggest benefit in the successful application of wood as an energy source, is that it started the energy revolution in Burlington and now, in an era of concern about climate change, many point to Burlington’s energy grid as a model for other cities to consider. “It’s very satisfying for me to know that I worked at a place for my whole career that really amounted to something that I consider a very positive for Vermont, the country, the world,” said MacDonnell. After three decades with Burlington electric and helping it pave the way for renewable energy, MacDonnell is preparing to retire. He leaves feeling like he made more than money in his career, he made a difference. “You have a sense of pride knowing that you are doing something that is a difference. I have kids and grandkids and we want to make sure we leave this planet in good shape for them.” Burlington hit the historic milestone running 100% on renewable energy five years ago, and now at least four other cities have hit that milestone too. Those cities are Aspen, Colorado; Greensburg, Kansas; Kodiak, Alaska; and Rock Port, Missouri. Within the next decade, a dozen states are hoping to get there, states like Minnesota, Massachusetts, and even California. However, while other cities and states are trying to catch up to Burlington, it’s moving forward with the next step that is a more ambitious energy goal. Burlington wants to be the first net zero energy city in the country. Essentially, the city wants the total amount of energy it consumes to be equal to the total amount of renewable energy it creates. “About a month ago we rolled out a roadmap to go from where we are today to net zero across the thermal ground transportation electric sectors by 2030,” said Burlington’s Mayor Miro Weinberger. “The exciting thing about the roadmap is that we can get there with technology that is available today and are largely cost effective today.” The move forward, for Burlington, is not about energy bragging rights, but about data suggesting this move is critical. “All the climate models suggest we need to make substantial progress by 2030 and much more dramatic progress by 2050,” added Weinberger. 4376
