For most people, a summer trip to France is a chance to relax in beautiful surroundings and to savor the country's fine food. For Tom Rice of San Diego, it's an opportunity to relive the time he nearly died jumping from a C-47 Douglas airplane, then was shot at, again and again.Despite being 97, Rice climbed once more into the bone-rattling fuselage of a C-47 and, while flying over the Normandy fields where he first saw action in 1944, leaped into the unknown.Those on the ground watched the anxiety-inducing descent as, strapped to another parachutist dangling beneath a stars and stripes canopy, the old man coasted through the sky, another gigantic American flag billowing out behind him.Reaching the ground with only a slight stumble on impact, Rice proudly gave V for victory signs with his hands and, wearing a 101st Airborne baseball cap, said he felt "great" and was ready to "go back up and do it again."Rice, along with thousands of other, was in Normandy to mark the anniversary of the June 6 D-Day military operations that 75 years ago saw Allied forces turn the tide of World War II toward eventual defeat for Nazi Germany.Most participants were content with touring some of the broad landing beaches -- with code names like Juno, Gold and Omaha -- that saw legions of young men wade ashore into a barrage of German machine gun and artillery fire to push back German advances.Under fireBut Rice, who has recreated his Normandy parachute jump several times, was adamant the best way to pay tribute to the fellow soldiers who laid down their lives that day is to step back into the shoes of his younger self and take to the skies.He was among several hundred parachutists recreating the events of June 6, 1944, many using simple parachutes similar to those used 75 years ago.Despite the intervening years, Rice clearly recalls his experiences when, as a 22-year-old member of the US Army's 101st Airborne Division's 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, he was dropped into enemy territory to capture strategic infrastructure to safeguard the beach invasion.Barely briefed on his mission and burdened down with equipment, Rice was first in line to leap from the aircraft when everything started to go wring."I was thinking, 'let's get the hell out of here,' because we were under fire," he told CNN. "All the thoughts about what we're going to do, how we're going to do it just passed through my mind so quickly and I was so focused on getting out of that aircraft."Unfortunately for Rice, to avoid enemy gunfire the C-47's pilot had accelerated to 165 miles per hour, beyond the safe drop speed of 105 mph, and refused to slow down. When Rice came to jump, the force of the airspeed caused his arm to get trapped in the doorway.After several comrades had pushed past and out into the air, Rice managed to free himself, but by now he had overshot his planned drop zone, landing into an unknown part of Normandy.Exploding grenadeRegrouping with several others in the dead of night -- they used passwords and cricket-noise clickers to ensure they weren't the enemy -- Rice says danger presented itself immediately when one of his fellow soldiers showed him a hand grenade that had been armed."The pin was pulled," he recalled. "You can't get the pin back in a hand grenade so I said, 'all right, give it to me.' I squeezed down on that thing like it was a part of my body, got everybody down and rolled over in the ditch and dropped it there."It went to the bottom of the water and I rolled back in the center of the road. It exploded and the war was on from there."Trying to find their way, Rice and several others later approached a farmhouse to ask directions to Carentan, a small town where he had been ordered to seize control of a canal head."A Frenchman came to the door and he was dressed in a long, white nightgown from shoulder to floor," Rice said. "He had a nightcap on with a tassel in it. He had a dish with a candle in it, lighted."I stood there and just laughed."It was a brief moment of levity in a mission otherwise fraught by lethal encounters. On reaching Carentan, his team set up a defensive position, making makeshift alarms out of wire and tin cans to warn of enemy approach."At two in the morning we heard the rattling," he recalls. "We just opened up with fire. All three of us had submachine guns going."Digging a graveRice continues his story with characteristic bluntness. His war tales dwell more on the chaos and brutality of conflict than on the heroics. He says he and his comrades shot and injured a German soldier, then completed the job by hand."One of the guys went out and with his French knife finished him off," Rice said. "Then we dragged his body into the apple orchard and we dug a grave site there for him."After holding the Carantan position for D-Day, Rice remained in Normandy for several weeks, involved in offensives and operations including the capture, at one point, in the capture of 400 German soldiers.He says the campaign eventually claimed the lives of about 37% of his complement, but Rice went on to jump into occupied Holland, seeing action in Bastogne and the Battle of the Bulge, the last major German offensive.When the war was over, Rice returned to the United States and continued studies that had been interrupted by military service. Getting from here to there is becoming increasingly more sustainable, in part, by electric cars.“All the cars are getting electrified,” Don Hillebrand, with the Advanced Powertrain Research Facility at Argonne National Labs in Illinois, said. “The minivan and the middle of the road sort of cars and the trucks.”By 2040, more than half of new car sales and a third of all cars on the road across the world are projected to be electric, according to Bloomberg.com.But it raises an important question.“What do you do with these batteries at the end of their life?” Linda Gaines said. Gaines is the chief scientist for Recell Center of Advanced Battery Recycling.“For a long time a lot of us looked at electrification sort of as hype,” Hillebrand explained.Hillebrand works at Argonne National Labs in the energy systems division, focusing on optimizing how energy is used. He sees one big problem in the creation of electric car batteries. “There are not enough fundamental elements that go into batteries for us to make all the batteries we need forever and throw them away when we’re done,” he said.Meaning these elements need to be reused. “The early batteries from 10 years ago are hitting the end of their life,” he said.The global stockpile of these batteries is expected to exceed 3.4 million by 2035, compared to 55,000 in 3018, according to the Institute for Energy Research. Once the battery loses 20 to 30 percent of its capacity, the available driving range gets shorter, so some companies are using them for other purposes.Florida Power and Light is using them for power storage, and Nissan is reusing old Leaf batteries to power Japanese street lights.These companies are repurposing, but researchers think another fix could come in the development stage.“After 10, 15 years, those batteries are going to reach the end of life and we have to do something with them,” Venkat Srinivasan, a battery scientist at Argonne National Labs, said. “We think there are ways in which we can make these batteries last more than 20 years.”And that’s exactly what’s being done inside this facility. The lab he works in is looking into ways to make batteries last longer. But for now, the main focus is on giving them a second life by recycling.“The biggest challenge today in recycling batteries is they’re not economic,” Venkat said.That's where the Recell Battery recycling center and other recycling businesses come into play.“If you can recover the materials in the battery in a usable form,” Linda Gaines explained. “You can actually recover valuable product.” This includes cobalt and other elements. Linda Gaines and Jeff Spangenberger are part of this center. Their goal is to come up with a recycling process that’s profitable.“Some things take more energy and resources to recycle then it did to make them in the first place,” Gaines said. “So, when you’re looking at the whole life cycle of the product, you need to try to figure out what the benefits are and what the costs are to recycle.”To understand size, one pouch cell in an electric car battery is about the size of a tablet. In the generation 1 Chevy Volt there are 288 pouch cells in one battery.Cars have become the biggest user of lithium ion batteries -- even more than consumer electronics, the Institute for Energy Research said.While Recell is looking into ways to make the recycling process more beneficial and profitable, Larry Reaugh with American Manganese, Inc. is doing something similar. “That’s where we come in, we want the battery packs,” Reaugh said. With their process, they are able to recover the elements inside the battery, comparing their operation to a small operating mine.“There’s a lot of money in it, because it’s very valuable material,” he said.As more batteries retire, companies like this will become more important.“There’s a trickle of batteries that are being recycled right now, but there’s gonna be an avalanche of batteries coming in the next 5 to 10 years as cars hit the end of their life,” Hillebrand said. 4027

Two children died, when a tree fell on their car during a tornado outbreak in Texas.“You can't imagine that happening. I would never think of that, you know, a tree hitting a car while you're going down the road, so it was very upsetting,” said neighbor Joe Spangler.The children’s mother ran to Spangler’s house. begging for help.“She was like 'help me, help me,' so I pulled her in the house, and I saw down the road that her husband was down there, so I ran down there to see what was going on,” Spangler told TV stations KTRE. “When I got down there, I mean, I saw the size of the tree and how it was on the car. Greyhound has been put up for sale after its UK owner caved to activist investors who wanted the company to ditch the bus line.FirstGroup, which owns the iconic inter-city bus operation, said Thursday that it wants to focus on its school transportation and commuter businesses.The company said in a statement that Greyhound has "limited synergies" with its other businesses in North America and that "value for shareholders can best be delivered by seeking new owners.""Our plans will create a more focused portfolio, with leading positions in our core North American contracting markets," added CEO Matthew Gregory.The company owns American school bus service First Student, which it says is the largest in North America. Its First Transit brand offers shuttle buses and other services to commuters in the United States.FirstGroup said the two divisions generate a combined 60% of the its operating profits and increasingly overlap in terms of the technologies and skills they require.
