WILMINGTON, Del. – President-elect Joe Biden addressed the nation Friday about the November jobs report that shows American companies are hiring at a slower pace as COVID-19 cases spike across the country.The report released by the Department of Labor Friday shows that the unemployment rate fell slightly to a still-high 6.7%. One in every four small businesses can’t keep their doors open. And there’s a growing gap in Black and Latino unemployment, and the gab remains much too large,” said Biden.As he doesn’t take office until the end of January, Biden is calling on President Donald Trump and the current Congress to act in the interest of the American people now.“If Congress and President Trump fail to act by the end of December, 12 million Americans will lose their unemployment benefits they rely on,” said Biden. “Merry Christmas. The unemployment benefits allowing them to keep food on the table, to keep the lights on, and the heat on, pay their bills.”If lawmakers don’t act, Biden pointed out that emergency paid leave will end, the moratorium on evictions will expire, and states will lose the vital tools they need to pay for COVID-19 testing and public health.“If we don’t act now, the future will be very bleak,” said Biden.Biden did say he was encouraged by the bipartisan 8 billion relief plan that was proposed this week, but said more aid will be needed throughout 2021 in order to get the country back on track. The latest relief plan doesn’t include ,200 stimulus checks for Americans, but Biden said he’s not convinced it won’t be part of the bill in the end and added that it’s “still in play.”Biden also called for funding for COVID-19 vaccines and testing as the U.S. finds itself in its most perilous point in the COVID-19 pandemic to date.“We need to ramp up testing to allow our schools and businesses to operate safely. The sooner we pass the funding, the sooner we turn the corner on COVID-19,” said Biden.On Thursday, Johns Hopkins said that the U.S. reported record numbers of new COVID-19 deaths and infections. Since Halloween, more than 5 million Americans have contracted COVID-19 — a number that represents about 36% of all cases recorded since the pandemic began.Biden's remarks come days after he announced his picks for key economic positions in his incoming administration. Among them is former Fed chairwoman Janet Yellen, who Biden has tapped to run the Treasury Department. Yellen, a Keynesian economist who is not afraid to allow the government to intervene in the free market, will be tasked with working with Congress to get stimulus packages passed.Biden is also expected to announce his picks for key public health positions in the coming days. White House chief of staff Mark Meadows told reporters Wednesday that President Donald Trump wants to continue working from the Oval Office despite being infected with COVID-19.According to CNN and CBS, Meadows told reporters that the White House would be taking extra precautions to allow Trump to do so. While many have people lost their jobs over the past few months, for some people, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a scenario that made it easier for them to find work. Lashaunda Garner is one of those people.“In my situation I was out of work for 16 years,” said Garner.After nearly two decades, Garner found a work-from-home job at the start of the pandemic.“As soon as I got the job, I was like ‘oh my gosh, I can do something past my disability,’” she added.Garner suffers from severe PTSD and anxiety, which makes it difficult to work in a traditional work environment.“In my case, there are certain sounds, certain smells and things that trigger your depression and when I am at home, I can limit those things,” said Garner.While work-from-home options were previously limited. During forced business closures and stay at home orders, the U.S. saw a surge in work-from-home jobs, especially call center positions.“The pandemic struck, and all of the call centers had to send their agents home. This was worldwide. This was something that never happened before,” said Alan Hubbard. “Some of the agents that were sent home in India, the Philippines and China didn’t have the physical infrastructure in order to do those jobs.”Hubbard is with the National Telecommuting Institute (NTI), which helps people with disabilities work from home. In Garner’s case, it had already helped her setup a home office and everything needed to work from home when the surge happened.“You hear people say, ‘you aren’t your job’ right, but for a lot of people, that is how they identify themselves,” said Hubbard. “That they are working, that they are productive. That is the opportunity that we try to provide.”Garner is just one example out of many people with disabilities who have been able to find work-from-home jobs and thrive in that environment over the past few months.Since the beginning of the pandemic, NTI has had a significant increase in companies come to them for help finding workers. They have four times as many available jobs to fill and have actually been able to place nearly 200 people in work-from-home jobs in the last six weeks. When, typically, it places about 50 people a month.“That is what the pandemic has done. It has opened up this opportunity for these folks,” said Hubbard.Hubbard is currently working with a dozen companies looking to hire another 240 people.Lashaunda is thriving in her current role and hoping her story inspires not just other people with disabilities, but the millions looking for work right now.“Do the best you can and fight for what you want,” said Garner. “It may take you, hopefully not 16 years, but you will end up getting it.” 2681

While traveling with his parents on route to Virginia from New Jersey, James Murray made an attempt to get on I-95 and make a smooth sailing trip to his destination.But, Maryland's weather and high winds had other plans."The rain was okay, and getting out of New Jersey was fine, but then we got into and crossed over Maryland and they closed I-95 down, it was crazy," said Murray.In a Facebook Live, Murray goes into detail about his tense situation.Murray says he recalls the traffic being stand still and officials forcing all the vehicles off of the interstate into a little town called Port Deposit.It was starting to hit the late hours of midnight and Murray's parents, who were also in the vehicle, began to feel worried that they wouldn't be able to find their way. With no hotels and no opened restaurants in the area, they all started to feel concerned while driving through the unknown town for hours.That's when Murray saw an opened restaurant called Jumbo Jimmy's and immediately pulled into the parking lot to enter the restaurant. He was then greeted by a woman behind the counter who told him that the restaurant's kitchen was closed. After the woman took a second glimpse at Murray and recognized who he was, she immediately told him that they'll be more than happy to open the kitchen to serve him."The people were so lovely, so lovely in this place, not just the people that worked there, but the patrons were so nice and friendly, and they treated my parents like a million bucks." Murray also goes on to share that many people in the restaurant extended their generosity and were willing to open their homes to him and his parents. Murray says him and his parents stayed overnight with a local nurse named Ruthie who accommodated them.During his Facebook Live video, Murray got emotional while expressing his gratitude towards the people, town, and restaurant who turned his uncomfortable situation into a very memorable and comforting one."I guess what I am trying to say is, there's good out there in the world," said Murray, "If ever you think that the world is [bad] don't worry there's lots of good people." 2181
