BEIJING, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- China's consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, rose 4.1 percent year-on-year in December, down 0.1 percentage point from November on falling non-food prices, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Thursday.The CPI was up 5.4 percent in 2011 from the previous year, well above the government's full-year inflation control target of 4 percent, the NBS said in a statement on its website.The inflation rate in December marked a five-straight-month decline after hitting a 37-month high of 6.5 percent in July amid government tightening measures, according to the NBS data.On a monthly basis, the cost of living dipped 0.2 percent in December, while prices of entertainment, educational and cultural articles and services dropped 0.3 percent, the NBS said.Food prices, which account for nearly one third of the basket of goods in the nation's CPI calculation, went up 9.1 percent year-on-year in December and 1.2 percent month-on-month, the NBS said.The December inflation figure was in line with the market expectation, as many economists forecast that the CPI would grow around 4 percent year-on-year in December.China's Producer Price Index (PPI), a major measure of inflation at the wholesale level, rose 1.7 percent in December year-on-year, further weakening from 2.7 a month earlier.China has made controlling prices a top priority last year and implemented a series of measures to address the issue, including tightening monetary policy, cracking down on speculation, increasing food supplies and reducing circulation costs.

BEIJING, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese Mars orbiter named Yinghuo-1 was successfully launched on Wednesday morning from Russian-leased Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, China's authorities said. BEIJING, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Chairman of the Central Military Commission Hu Jintao Saturday issued an order to publicize the Regulations on Resettlement of Ex-Servicemen, which will take effect from Nov. 1.Formulated with an aim to protect the legitimate rights and interests of ex-servicemen, the 53-article document highlights a series of initiatives designed for the appropriate placement of veterans.State organs, social groups, enterprises and public institutions should give preferential treatment to ex-servicemen while recruiting staff members or contract workers, according to the regulations.The regulations provide that demobilized soldiers who register for a civil servant examination or apply for a position in government institutions will be given preference.Those companies or organizations which recruit retired soldiers will enjoy favorable policies prescribed by current laws and regulations.

This is the message the Fiji Cancer Society is sending out this October, which is breast cancer awareness month, worldwide.Fiji Cancer Society Chairperson and breast cancer awareness month President Nirmala Nambiar said, "Fiji continues to have a high incidence of breast cancer deaths with large number of tumors presented to health professionals at a late stage due to the stigma of having the disease."In the first quarter of 2011, there were 46 new breast cancer cases recorded, whilst there were 33 new cases in the same period last year."The figures could be scary but one must understand that as the awareness increases in our communities the number of cases recorded increases," she warned.Men and women should be aware that age, obesity and family history are all factors that contribute to the risk of developing the disease.This October the Fiji Cancer Society has planned a number of events all targeted to raise awareness since the lack of information and education is dangerous.Nambiar said through partnership with the Ministry of Health, Oxfam Clinic in Suva and the Fiji Nurses Association, supported by the sponsorship of Colgate Palmolive, the focus this year is on reaching out to the rural community and making a difference to the lives of the poor and unprivileged."We have free checkups planned for the month at the major villages from Vunidawa, Korovou and Valelevu to Lami at the other end and hope that we will be able to support the women in this area who may not be able to have a check- up otherwise.According to the official, the society's western branch continues to arrange free check- ups with the support of the Patan Clinic.The awareness and free checkups have also been arranged for corporate organizations at their request and if we are not able to provide all this during October we will continue to schedule them for the following month.The Society's thanks go to Suva Private Hospital for offering half price mammograms for the month of October, Nambiar said, adding a common issue with Fiji women, according to doctors at the hospital, was the return rate."Once they hear the news that they have cancer, many women don' t return because of the fear of what's next. We continue to investigate a few remaining issues," said Apple in a statement made to technology news site AllThingsD.Apple released iOS 5.0.1, an update to its latest mobile operating system iOS 5 on Thursday. The update includes fixes for some bugs which are blamed for shortening the battery life of iPhones and other devices that use the system.Some users said the battery life of their iPhones look much better after the update. But according to some posts on Apple's official support forums, some iPhone owners still claimed the issue is persisting, saying they saw no difference at all after downloading the update.Complaints about the battery life of Apple's latest iPhone 4S smartphone have been piling up on the Internet in the past weeks.On Apple's official support forums, some iPhone 4S owners said their handsets' battery drained more than 10 percent every hour, even when in standby mode with some advanced features like Siri and location services completely deactivated.It is reported that Apple engineers contacted some iPhone 4S owners in Britain and installed a diagnosis file on their devices to send details back to the company's headquarters in Cupertino, California.Apple confirmed the iPhone battery issue last Wednesday, saying that a few bugs in the iOS system have caused the problem and it will release a software update in a few weeks.
