CARLSBAD (CNS) - The Army and Navy Academy agreed to pay .75 million to settle a lawsuit filed by a former cadet at the Carlsbad-based military school, where the cadet was allegedly sexually assaulted in 1999, the law firm representing the cadet announced today.The civil suit, filed by Irvine-based law firm Manly, Stewart & Finaldi, alleged that 60-year-old Jeffrey Barton, who was an administrator in charge of academics at the academy, molested the cadet when he was a ninth-grader in 1999, the law firm said in a statement.The lawsuit alleged that Barton drugged the cadet in May 1999 and sodomized him in a bathroom on campus.In a criminal case involving the cadet, Barton was convicted in June 2017 of five felony counts of oral copulation and one felony county of sodomy.He was sentenced to 48 years in prison in August 2017.Manly, Stewart & Finaldi also represented a former cadet of the Carlsbad-based academy in a separate civil suit in 2017. CAMP PENDLETON (CNS) - A U.S. Marine was fatally injured in a tactical- vehicle accident at Camp Pendleton, the Marine Corps announced Monday. The serviceman was one of three members of the elite Marine Raider Regiment involved in the accident, which occurred during a training exercise on Saturday, according to Maj. Nicholas Mannweiler of U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Special Operations Command.The critically injured Marine was airlifted to a trauma center, where he was pronounced dead Sunday night, Mannweiler said. (KGTV) — Legoland California's massive "Star Wars" section of the park's Miniland area will depart for a galaxy far, far away next year.The park said the area will make way for something new eventually, but is tight-lipped on what guests can expect to take the attraction's place. (KGTV) -- Police are investigating the death of a woman whose body was discovered on a Carlsbad hiking trail Monday morning.Carlsbad police were called to the Hosp Grove Trails, near the Buena Vista Lagoon and in the 2600 block of Monroe Street, shortly before 11:30 a.m. after someone reported the discovery of a body in the area.The deceased woman, believed to be 65 years old, has not been officially identified.ABC 10News learned police are investigating the incident as a suspicious death.
