The man suspected of killing and wounding multiple people at Strasbourg's famed Christmas market was killed by French police, following a shoot-out not far from the scene of Tuesday's attack.Authorities announced Friday a fourth person had died as a result of being shot by the suspect, and 12 others are wounded.Cherif Chekatt, the 29-year old suspect, was shot dead on Thursday evening, two days after he first disappeared sparking a massive manhunt involving hundreds of police officers, soldiers and anti-terror specialists from three European countries.French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said police recognized a man who looked like Chekatt walking on the street in Strasbourg's Neudorf district on Thursday night and approached him. He opened fire on officers when they tried to question him, he said.Police returned fire, killing the suspect, Castaner said."As I am speaking to you, I am thinking about the victims and the wounded. I am thinking of those close to them. I am thinking of Strasbourg and France that was hit by this terrible attack," Castaner said.On Thursday, Strasbourg police said the death toll from the attack had risen to three, after one person succumbed to their injuries. Another was declared dead Friday.Four people remain in serious condition with eight others suffering light injuries. The hunt prompted a curfew in the eastern French city near the German border and forced the country to raise its national security threat level to its highest status: "emergency terror attack."French prosecutors said the suspect shouted the Arabic phrase "Allahu Akbar," meaning "God is greatest," at the time of the attack."It's relief for the people of Strasbourg to know that the attacker has been killed," Strasbourg Mayor Roland Ries said, adding that the Christmas market would reopen on Friday. The French National Police thanked the public for their assistance in finding Chekatt."Thank you for your alerts which allowed us to find the wanted individual," the National Police said on Twitter.Earlier on Thursday, Paris prosecutor's office said that a fifth person was taken into custody in relation to the attack. "At this stage there are five people in custody," a spokesperson said.Authorities said Chekatt entered the perimeter of the market, one of the oldest in Europe, by the city's Corbeau Bridge and started shooting and stabbing passers-by on the Rue des Orfevres around 8 p.m., when many were in the middle of their Christmas shopping.Anti-terror police flooded the market and tried to arrest the suspected gunman. He exchanged fire with security forces, suffering an injury to his arm. The suspected gunman then jumped into a taxi and fled the scene, Heitz said.On Thursday, French police evacuated buildings and cordoned off the area close to where Chekatt had fled. The gunman's father, mother and two brothers were also questioned by police, a source close to the investigation told CNN.Checkatt was already known to security services as a possible threat, police said. He has an extensive criminal background that includes 27 convictions in France, Germany and Switzerland, mostly for acts of robbery and violence.A spokeswoman for the Swiss Federal Police, Cathy Maret, said Chekatt was well known to authorities there, having been arrested and convicted several times in Switzerland for crimes such as break-ins, theft and violence. He was not on their radar as a radical Islamist or for narcotics violations, she said.In 2017, he was deported from Germany to France after the Interior Ministry in the German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg confirmed he had been convicted of break-ins and serious theft in 2016 and spent time in a German prison. The German Federal Criminal Office said the suspect was not known in Germany as a radical Islamist. However, Chekatt was known to French prison officials for being radicalized and for his proselytizing behavior in detention in 2015, Paris prosecutor Heitz said, adding that he had been incarcerated multiple times. He was also on a French watch list called a "Fiche S" surveillance file. The "Fiche S" is a French terror and radicalization watch list that includes thousands of people, some of whom are under active surveillance, meaning they are on law enforcement's radar.Hours before the attack, French gendarmes tried to bring Chekatt in for questioning but found he wasn't home, a spokesperson for France's National Police told CNN earlier this week, without providing further details.Chekatt was born in Strasbourg, according to CNN affiliate BFM. 4554

The head of Interpol, who vanished after taking a flight to Beijing, is being held and investigated for corruption, the Chinese Ministry of Public Security said in a statement Monday.Meng Hongwei, who was also a vice minister of public security in China, has been accused by the Chinese government of accepting bribes and committing unspecified other crimes."(Meng) insisted on taking the wrong path and had only himself to blame (for his downfall)," the country's top law enforcement official, Zhao Kezhi, was quoted as saying in the statement.Chinese authorities had previously remained tight-lipped about the whereabouts of Meng, following his sudden disappearance last month after he flew from France to China. In an earlier statement released on Sunday, the Chinese government said Meng was "under investigation" by the National Supervisory Commission, the country's top anti-corruption unit, but gave no further details on whether he was in custody or what the charges might be.Concerns over Meng's whereabouts were first raised by wife, Grace, who reported him missing to French authorities in the city of Lyon, where the couple live, last Thursday. She was moved to contact authorities after she received a final text message on September 25, shortly after he arrived in China, with a knife emoji and instructions to "wait for my call."That call never came. The South China Morning Post, a Hong Kong-based newspaper known for its connections inside the Chinese government, said Meng was "taken away" for questioning upon landing in China last week. The newspaper cited an unnamed source. In a separate development, Interpol said it had received Meng's resignation from the international police agency with "immediate effect" according to statement posted Sunday. It made no mention of the former president's whereabouts or the Chinese investigation. 1861

The National Park Service plans to thin a herd of bison in the Grand Canyon through roundups and by seeking volunteers who are physically fit and proficient with a gun to kill the animals that increasingly are damaging park resources. Some bison would be shipped out of the area and others legally hunted on the adjacent forest. Within the Grand Canyon, shooters would be selected through a lottery to help bring the number of bison roaming the far northern reaches of the park to no more than 200 within three to five years. About 600 of the animals now live in the region, and biologists say the bison numbers could hit 1,500 within 10 years if left uncontrolled. The Grand Canyon is still working out details of the volunteer effort, but it's taking cues from national parks in Colorado, the Dakotas and Wyoming that have used shooters to cut overabundant or diseased populations of elk. The Park Service gave final approval to the bison reduction plan this month.Sandy Bahr of the Sierra Club says she's hopeful Grand Canyon will focus mostly on non-lethal removal. The Grand Canyon bison are descendants of those introduced to northern Arizona in the early 1900s as part of a ranching operation to crossbreed them with cattle. The state of Arizona now owns them and has an annual draw for tags on the Kaibab National Forest. Nearly 1,500 people applied for one of 122 tags this year, according to the Arizona Game and Fish Department. The bison have been moving in recent years within the Grand Canyon boundaries where open hunting is prohibited. Park officials say they're trampling on vegetation and spoiling water resources. The reduction plan would allow volunteers working in a team with a Park Service employee to shoot bison using non-lead ammunition to protect endangered California condors that feed on gut piles.Hunters cannot harvest more than one bison in their lifetime through the state hunt, making the volunteer effort intriguing, they say."I would go if I had a chance to retain a portion of the meat," said Travis McClendon, a hunter in Cottonwood. "It definitely would be worth going, especially with a group."Grand Canyon is working with state wildlife officials and the Intertribal Buffalo Council to craft guidelines for roundups and volunteer shooters, who would search for bison in the open, said Park Service spokesman Jeff Olson.Much of the work would be done on foot in elevations of 8,000 feet or higher between October and May when the road leading to the Grand Canyon's North Rim is closed. Snowmobiles and sleds would be used to remove the bison meat, and helicopters in rare instances, park officials said.Carl Lutch, the terrestrial wildlife manager for Game and Fish in Flagstaff, said some models require volunteers to be capable of hiking eight miles a day, carrying a 60-pound pack and hitting a paper plate 200 yards away five times. The head and hide of the bison would be given to tribes, or federal and state agencies.Lutch said one scenario discussed is splitting the bison meat among volunteers, with each volunteer able to take the equivalent of meat from one full bison. Anything in excess of that would be given to tribes and charities, he said. A full-grown bull can have hundreds of pounds of meat.Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota used volunteers in 2010 for elk reduction, selecting 240 people from thousands of applicants, said park spokeswoman Eileen Andes. Some quit before the week was over, she said."We had quite a bit of snow, so you're not in a vehicle, you're not on a horse," she said. "You're hiking through snow to shoot elk and haul them out. It was exceedingly strenuous." 3664

The latest release of documents related to the mass shooting on Oct. 1 contain a mixture of reports by police officers and witness statements. One of the reports contained in the release on Wednesday appears to be an interview with country singer Jason Aldean, who was performing when Stephen Paddock opened fire on music lovers at the Route 91 Harvest Festival.According to the statement, the person making the statement instructed officers to take himself, his bodyguard and pregnant wife to the airport. He then told the officer that he was on stage playing when he heard the first few pops. He said he was confused like everyone was and looked around, but didn't see anything out of the ordinary.  The next large barrage of fire he said was so loud to him that it sounded as if someone was right next to the stage firing shots. The person making the statement then said he could see people in the audience dropping to the ground in "waves."  Someone backstage yelled out that it was gunfire and for him to get down. That's when he ran off the stage and went to protect his pregnant wife who was inside the tour bus that protected the perimeter until he was evacuated. The documents included what appears to be a written statement from Aldean."I was onstage singing and thought I heard fireworks. I turned to look at my monitor guy and saw my personal security guard running toward me and telling me to evacuate the stage. At that point, we layed (sic) on the stage and hid until we could get on my bus. We then stayed in the back of the bus for a few hours until police escorted us away." Another report appeared to be an interview with Dee Jay Silver, who had performed at the festival around 9 p.m. ahead of Aldean. After the shooting began, he was hiding in a tour bus. Silver then received a text asking what floor his 1-year-old son was on.The baby was sleeping down the hall on the 32nd floor -- the floor where shooter Stephen Paddock was located. That's when Silver found out the floor had been evacuated. Silver was taken to multiple places before he ended up at the Thomas & Mack. He eventually received a text that his son was at Town Square. After he was reunited with him Silver told police, "I just held him and held him and held him." Police also asked Silver if he had noticed any suspicious, staying on the same floor as the shooter. Silver did not recall seeing Paddock or speaking to him. But he also didn't see housekeeping during that time. Silver was moved to Delano after the shooting. A bike officer with Mandalay Bay described how he was headed towards the festival grounds when he heard that a Mandalay Bay officer was hit and decided to turn around. He commandeered an elevator, picked up an engineer, and headed to the 32nd floor. When he got there, he heard automatic gunfire coming from the end of the hall. According to the bike officer, that is when Jesus Campos came running towards him when the shooting paused. The bike officer says he inspected the wound and decided it didn't look very severe.Everything was kind of a blur after that but the bike officer said he helped police officers clear the rooms. One police officer who was at the scene describes how he and other police officers took cover behind a police car during the shooting. The officer says that multiple rounds hit the car and the rear window was shot out. One of the officers began yelling that he was hit and said he could not move his arm. Another officer grabbed the wounded officer and they left to seek medical attention.According to statement by several police officers, there was a lot of commotion and confusion the night of the shooting at several properties located near Mandalay Bay.Calls were received from Circus Circus, Tropicana, Bellagio, New York-New York and the Bellagio hotel-casino.In each case, police officers were unable to find another shooter. However, they did discover that the possible shooter at the Bellagio was actually the vice president of security. It appears that the VP decided to put on a tactical vest and arm himself and protect Bellagio if necessary. Many reports from officers describe how they were off duty at the time of the shooting but "self dispatched" when they began to hear what was happening. Several officers headed towards the Route 91 festival grounds while others headed to hospitals where victims were being assisted or even took it upon themselves to assist with traffic control. 4520
