The Justice Department's inspector general is opening an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of multimillionaire financier and accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, Attorney General William Barr announced on Saturday. The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed Epstein's death, saying he was found unresponsive in his cell on Saturday at New York's Metropolitan Correctional Center around 6:30 a.m. ET. The bureau's release called it "an apparent suicide," and said the FBI is investigating. Two law enforcement sources told CNN that Epstein died by suicide.Barr said he was "appalled" to learn of Epstein's death while in federal custody awaiting trial."I was appalled to learn that Jeffrey Epstein was found dead early this morning from an apparent suicide while in federal custody. Mr. Epstein's death raises serious questions that must be answered," Barr said in a statement. "In addition to the FBI's investigation, I have consulted with the Inspector General who is opening an investigation into the circumstances of Mr. Epstein's death."Epstein had been jailed since early July, when he pleaded not guilty to charges by New York federal prosecutors after an indictment accused him of sex trafficking dozens of underage girls, some as young as 14 years old.The Southern District of New York's investigation into Epstein's alleged conduct is ongoing after his death, according to Geoffrey Berman, the US attorney overseeing that office."Today's events are disturbing, and we are deeply aware of their potential to present yet another hurdle to giving Epstein's many victims their day in Court," Berman said in a statement. "To those brave young women who have already come forward and to the many others who have yet to do so, let me reiterate that we remain committed to standing for you, and our investigation of the conduct charged in the Indictment -- which included a conspiracy count -- remains ongoing," Berman said.No foul play is suspected in Epstein's death, a federal official told CNN. Authorities believe Epstein hanged himself, a law enforcement source told CNN.After Epstein was placed on suicide watch when he was found with marks on his neck on July 23, daily psychological assessments were conducted on him, according to a source familiar with the matter. But at the end the month, psychologists with the Bureau of Prisons took him off suicide watch and cleared him to return to his cell in the Special Housing Unit, the source said.Barr is livid at the events surrounding the apparent suicide of Epstein and is determined to get to the bottom of what happened, according to a source familiar with the situation.Former deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein, who left the Justice Department in May, said in a 2765

The Department of Justice announced indictments on Wednesday against four executives who were allegedly involved in a conspiracy to fix prices and rig bids for broiler chickens. Jayson Penn, Roger Austin, Mikell Fries, and Scott Brady were each charged with one antitrust charge in federal court. Penn is the President and Chief Executive Officer, and Austin is a former Vice President, of Pilgrim’s Pride, a chicken supplier headquartered in Colorado. Fries is the President and a member of the board, and Brady is a Vice President, of Claxton Poultry, a broiler chicken producer headquartered in Georgia.According to Pilgrim’s Pride, it provides 20% of all chicken consumed in the United States. Claxton Poultry says it produces 300 million pounds of poultry a year, and is a supplier for Chick-fil-A. The DOJ alleges that the foursome's actions caused chicken prices at restaurants and grocery stores to be impacted. “Particularly in times of global crisis, the division remains committed to prosecuting crimes intended to raise the prices Americans pay for food,” said Assistant Attorney General Makan Delrahim of the Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division. “Executives who cheat American consumers, restauranteurs, and grocers, and compromise the integrity of our food supply, will be held responsible for their actions.”The executives face a maximum sentence of 10 years, and a million fine, if convicted. Broiler chickens are chickens raised for human consumption and sold to grocers and restaurants. A request for comment has been left for Pilgrim’s Pride. 1584

Tens of thousands of people were without power in Manhattan on Saturday evening, ConEdison said. There were 42,000 customers without power in New York, most of them in Midtown Manhattan and the Upper West Side, the utility company said.Mayor Bill de Blasio, who was campaigning for president in Iowa, said it appears the outage was the result of a mechanical problem in the electrical grid."This appears to be something that just went wrong in the way that they transmit power from one part of the city to another," he told CNN. "It sounds like it is addressable in a reasonable amount of time."The city's fire department was responding to numerous transformer fires, the first of which occurred in Manhattan on West 64th Street and West End Avenue, officials said.Several Broadway and off-Broadway shows said they were canceling performances, according to tweets aggregated by 889

Teacher pay is a small part of a giant puzzle of how to keep public schools running smoothly and effectively. Funding a school receives, however, can have an impact on a student’s experience. This elementary school in Chesterfield, South Carolina knows all about it. In the eyes of a kindergartener, school is just school, and they believe it's the same for everyone. However, their teacher, Natalie Melton, knows that's anything but true."It’s absolutely not fair,” she says. “All children deserve the same opportunity. All teachers deserve the same opportunity to use the same things to teach them.”But the way schools get their funds is part of a system that’s been in place since the mid-1970s.It’s a system superintendent Harrison Goodwin says needs to change.“It’s never going to be equal, because the resources that children are born into are never gonna be equal,” Goodwin says. “What we have to find is some way to make up for the equity of it.”Schools get their money from a mix of federal state and local sources, but nearly half their funds come from local property taxes. Chesterfield is a high-poverty, rural community. It's a problem faced by educators in states across the U.S.“At this school, we're probably about 70 to 72 percent high poverty,” Goodwin says.In South Carolina, he says there is a direct correlation between poverty and test scores. It means schools feel the need to do more with less. If Melton could send one message to the nation’s politicians, it’s this.“I would implore them to rethink some of the decisions they made to allocate things for education,” she says. “Every child deserves an opportunity to learn just like everyone else, no matter where you’re from, no matter where your parents are from or how much money your parents make. Any of that, all that, should be the same.” 1830
