SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- This Saturday, the City of San Diego invites all children to play in the mud.In a celebration of nature and friendship, “International Mud Day” encourages kids to get dirty together. First celebrated between Australia and Nepal in 2009, the holiday has spread to cities across the world.Saturday will mark San Diego’s 2nd Mud Day celebration. All children and their families are invited to Crown Point Park in Mission Bay from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.After a successful celebration in 2018, the City has expanded the event to include obstacle courses, nature crafts, and more. From mud forts to food trucks, there will be many ways to families to have fun getting dirty.Dr. Bronner’s Magic Foam Experience will make a special appearance, to make sure no one tracks mud back home.The event is free, but families are encouraged to register here. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Association of Governments will debate Wednesday the best way to get people to the airport. Four possible plans involving public transportation are involved. One would create a central terminal on Navy property near Old Town and tunnel under the airport with a people mover. Two other proposals would involve a terminal, but use an elevated people mover. The fourth option would extend the trolley, adding tracks along Harbor Drive. Dorene Robertson said the predictability of public transportation would be a benefit. “I know the shuttle's not going to get in a car accident, I know I'm going to get here when I plan to get here, I'm not going to get stuck on the freeway and not get here. So it takes away the uncertainty of getting to the airport on time,” said Robertson. Alex Santos, who typically relies on Uber to reach the airport, says he would only use public transportation if it was direct. “If it was dropping me off in front of my house or a townhome I live in, or a block away, that'd be perfect.” The SANDAG plans would cost anywhere from .8 billion to .7 billion dollars. They would serve as many as 44,000 people per day by 2050 and decrease traffic on Harbor Drive as much as 35 percent. City of San Diego and U.S. Navy officials signed an agreement last week to revamp the Navy complex near Old Town with the central terminal as a possibility for the project. 1424

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego man who claimed he punched a San Diego Police officer in self-defense was convicted on four counts Friday.Frederick Jefferson was arrested February 3 at Chicano Park in Barrio Logan. At the time, police were trying to disperse a crowd which had gathered as two groups debated the historical significance of the park. Barricades were in place, and dozens of officers were standing by to keep order.During a jailhouse interview with 10News, Jefferson said a San Diego Police officer asked him to get out the street. However, Jefferson said he didn’t want to walk with the protestors.RELATED: San Diego man claims he punched officer in self defenseJefferson said he tried talking to the officer but admitted he did not get out of the street.“When they got out of the car, I continued walking,” he said. “I told them I said, ‘I’m just going to keep walking on’ and as I kept walking on they came up behind me.”RELATED: Video: Demonstration between groups at Chicano Park becomes violentJefferson said an officer grabbed his shirt and swung a billy club.“I was afraid that if this dude got back a hold of me he was going to go town on me with the billy club," Jefferson said.San Diego Police Lt. Scott Wahl said Jefferson started fighting first.Jefferson admitted to 10News that he hit the officer twice in the face.“I swung and hit him to put distance between us and then he swung again and I swung again because I could not let this dude grab me.”Police said Jefferson broke bones in the officer’s face.“It was a very serious injury. It could have been much worse,” said Lt. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Valley Fire continued to burn overnight in East County as evacuations remain in place.So far, the blaze has scorched 17,345 acres and is 3% contained, as of 6:20 p.m. on Monday. Authorities with the Cleveland National Forest tweeted Monday that the fire had only grown by 408 acres overnight.Monday morning, Cal Fire said new evacuation orders were in place for the areas of Corral Canyon off-road area, Bobcat Meadows, and Los Pinos.Evacuation orders have also been issued for Barrett Lake Dam, while evacuation warnings have been issued for Lake Marina, Dulzura, Dog Patch, Potrero, Campo, Honey Springs, Barrett Junction, Dearhorn Valley, Corte Madera, Pine Valley, and the area from Lyons/Japatul Valley Rd. to the 8 Freeway.Evacuation centers have been set up at Steele Canyon High School at 2440 Campo Road and Joan MacQueen Middle School at 2001 Tavern Road.Cal Fire said Sunday night that 11 habitable structures and 25 outbuildings have so far been destroyed in the fire. Two people have so far been injured, the agency said.Cal Fire said Monday it will exercise an agreement it has with the Navy’s Third Fleet and the First Marine Expeditionary Force.
