The cost of the Justice Department's ongoing investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 election is now roughly million, according to a new report filed Friday by the special counsel's office.Friday's accounting provided the latest figures covering only the period for April 2018 through September 2018, with special counsel Robert Mueller listing direct expenditures of nearly .6 million.Another roughly .9 million was reported as costs for the work of other Justice and FBI officials who have assisted the investigation but are not under Mueller's direct control. According to the report, those investigation costs would have been incurred "irrespective of the existence of the (special counsel's office)."The department previously reported .7 million in direct and indirect costs from May through September 2017, and  million from October 2017 through March 2018 -- bringing the total from all three reports over the life of the investigation to just over million. Of that amount, only .3 million is the special counsel's direct expenditures.Since taking control of the Russia probe in May 2017, Mueller has advanced on multiple fronts to investigate any links between the Russian government and the Trump campaign, along with other crimes arising from the investigation. To date, the investigation has yielded charges against 36 people or entities. Seven people have pleaded guilty to various charges, including President Donald Trump's first national security adviser, Michael Flynn, former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, former deputy campaign chairman Rick Gates and former campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos.Meanwhile, Trump and his allies have relentlessly attacked Mueller and the probe as a waste of money.Trump took aim at the cost of the investigation last month, offering a grab-bag of different numbers Mueller had allegedly spent, untethered to the facts. On November 27, 2018 he tweeted: "now ,000,000 Witch Hunt continues and they've got nothing but ruined lives."Then 48 hours later, he tweeted criticizing the "witch hunt" for "wasting more than ,000,000." 2182

The Department of Justice said Monday that an NYPD officer had been arrested and charged with allegedly acting as an "illegal agent" for the Chinese government. In a statement released Monday, the DOJ said that in addition to illegal agent charges, 33-year-old Baimadajie Angwang has also been charged with committing wire fraud, making false statements and obstructing an official proceeding. The DOJ alleges that Angwang was providing information about Chinese citizens in the New York area to the government of the People's Republic of China. He was also allegedly "developing intelligence sources within the Tibetan community."According to Scripps station WPIX in New York, Angwang is a Tibetan native and resident of Long Island. He worked in the NYPD's 111th precinct in Queens and was also employed by the U.S. Army Reserve as a staff sergeant.Angwang initially arrived in the U.S. on a cultural exchange visa. Once that visa was renewed, he overstayed the length and later claimed asylum "on the basis that he had allegedly been arrested and tortured" in China due to his Tibetan heritage.A complaint alleges that Angwang has worked under the control of the Chinese government since 2014. He allegedly told his Chinese government handler that he wanted to be promoted within the NYPD "so that he could assist the PRC and bring 'glory to China.'""As alleged in this federal complaint, Baimadajie Angwang violated every oath he took in this country. One to the United States, another to the U.S. Army, and a third to this Police Department," NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said. "From the earliest stages of this investigation, the NYPD's Intelligence and Internal Affairs bureaus worked closely with the FBI's Counterintelligence Division to make sure this individual would be brought to justice.""The defendant allegedly violated the trust of his community and the New York City Police Department on behalf of a foreign power, the People's Republic of China. This type of conduct simply cannot be tolerated," said Alan E. Kohler, Jr., Assistant Director of the FBI's Counterintelligence Division. "This case serves as yet another reminder that China represents the biggest counterintelligence threat to the United States and that the FBI and our partners will be aggressive in investigating and stopping such activities within our nation."If convicted, Angwang faces a maximum of 55 years in prison. 2412

The Bureau of Labor Statistics says that the hospitality industry has been among the hard-hit during the coronavirus pandemic. But some are using the pandemic to test out new adventurous revenue streams amid the pandemic. With the industry severely impacted, there is an opportunity for hotels to monetize its space.HotelsByDay, a company that allows customers to use hotel rooms during daytime hours, lost 80% of its business during the height of the pandemic. But as many workers are unable to return to the office, some are booking rooms as officers. The company is now down 40%, with many clients booking rooms for work purposes.“It would be a lot more adventurous and can really test out every single possibility to monetize their hotel,’ Yannis Moati, the CEO of HotelsByDay said. “Not just with rooms, but with every single corner of the hotel.”According to the BLS, nearly half of all hospitality industry jobs were lost in April, with hotels losing 0 million a day. Six out of 10 hotel rooms were empty early in July. 1035

The First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs will reopen its sanctuary as a memorial on Sunday, one week after a gunman killed 25 people and an unborn child. In a Saturday news release, the Texas church invited the public and the media to the memorial to honor the dead, saying it had "undertaken several projects to help the healing process for the families and the community," one of which included restoring the church's sanctuary."Through generous volunteer efforts and offers from several individuals with varying fields of expertise," the statement read, "the scene of this unspeakable event has been transformed into a beautiful memorial that celebrates and pays tribute to the lives that were lost." 716

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at a record high Monday, erasing the last of its pandemic losses, after a second drug company announced encouraging progress on developing a coronavirus vaccine. The Dow Jones closed at 29,950, topping the previous record set back in February. The Dow Jones has completed a long comeback after losing nearly 35% of its value over the course of six weeks during the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. While the Dow rallied at the end of spring and start of summer, the markets were sluggish in their recovery until the start of November. The S&P 500 added to the record high it reached last Friday. The Dow rose 1.6% and the S&P 500 added 1.2% after Moderna said its COVID-19 vaccine appears to be 94.5% effective, according to preliminary data. It comes just a week after Pfizer and BioNTech gave similarly encouraging numbers about their own vaccine candidate. Stocks of companies that would benefit the most from the economy climbing out of its recession led the way higher. 1032
