SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Planning Commission advanced a plan Thursday that would make the Midway District more vibrant by adding housing, commercial projects and parks.The plan would grow the area’s housing from 2,000 to 11,000 over the next 20 years. Business development in the area would also generate a similar number of jobs.The district would also boast nearly 30 acres of parks. "We think it's an important opportunity to provide for the park needs of the community," project manager Vickie White said.The parks would all fit into an improved pedestrian and bile network that would make use of existing transit infrastructure. The city hopes the network would reduce the area’s reliance on cars."We're focused on creating comfortable connections along transit corridors to make this a more appealing area to walk or bike -- we see a lot off opportunities for modal increase in this area," White said.Reducing reliance on cars also complies with a citywide climate action plan. "If there's one real, glaring problem with this community it's a lack of connectivity from district to district," Commissioner William Hofman said.The area around sports arena and Valley View Casino Center would also get additional streets and paths.The plan includes a variety of possibilities for the sports arena including operating it as is or demolishing it and pushing for other land-use opportunities.The plan will now go to the City Council’s Smart Growth and Land Use Committee in May. 1493

Munoz is a Bellingham, Washington resident who is also a buyer for the chain.``A friend at work applied for my friend Angelique and I because she thought our crazy humor, competitiveness and passion for all things grocery- related would make for good TV. SAN DIEGO — Two of San Diego's biggest restaurant groups are sounding the alarm over state Coronavirus regulations.Owners of the Brigantine Family of Restuarants and the Cohn Restaurant Group say indoor capacity limits aren't sustainable. Currently, a restaurant can only seat 25 percent of its capacity indoors. “If we stay open and as we enter the fall and winter months, our restaurants cannot survive on 25 percent," said Leslie Cohn, of the Cohn restaurant group.The Cohn Group spent more than 0,000 creating social distancing in 16 of its restaurants - before the 25 percent capacity limit was instituted. Their employment is now down 40 percent to about 1,200 workers.“We should be concentrating on positive test percentages, hospital capacity, ICU and PPE availability and of course mask wearing, social distancing and employee screening,” Cohn said.Her frustrations, echoed by Mike Morton, who heads the Brigantine Family of Restaurants, where employment is off 20 percent to 1,000 workers. Morton said there are now waits every Friday, Saturday and Sunday - due to the capacity restraints.“Guests are going to get tired of that, and what else is that going to do? It allows us to employ less people due to limited capacity,” Morton said.The 25 percent cap will last at least another three weeks. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A fire that erupted in the attic of a Rancho Penasquitos home early Monday displaced seven residents, but nobody was hurt.The blaze was reported shortly after 12:45 a.m. at the two-story house in the 8400 block of Corte Fragata, off Carmel Mountain Road north of state Route 56, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.One person in the home told dispatchers the residents smelled smoke and saw smoke coming from the attic, SDFRD spokeswoman Monica Munoz said. Crews knocked down the fire within 25 minutes and kept the flames contained to the attic area, but the house sustained smoke damage, she said.The American Red Cross was called in to help the displaced residents -- four adults and three children -- arrange for temporary lodging.The cause of the fire was under investigation. 821

SAN DIEGO - A crash into a fire hydrant sent a geyser of water 50 feet in the air and flooded homes in Chollas Creek Sunday afternoon, witnesses said.The accident happened around 2 p.m. when witnesses said a U-Haul backed into a fire hydrant near the 5000 block of University Avenue. The hydrant broke, sending water shooting into the air.A home, several cars and some apartments nearby were flooded. The water was shut off about 45 minutes after it started, witnesses said.There is no damage estimate at this time. 523
